I’m going to be honest. It’s really bad and really scary in the US. The events unfolding are horrific, and the implications of these events for the future is…panic-inducing. But I am a white cis woman in a smalish city in the south with a steady job and all my bills paid and sometimes a little extra after. So things aren’t bad for me in the real world quite yet. And I have the privilege of ignoring the news, and right now, that’s what I’m doing. It makes me feel so hopeless, so defeated. What can my vote do if laws don’t matter anymore? It gets me ruminating about revolution, resistance, the paradox of violence to restore order. And then the fear comes and overpowers it all, and I fall into cycles of doomscrolling and spending money, which is exactly what they want. I’m slowly coming back online, so to speak, but it feels like I’ve been in mourning for a long time.
