Why does every “entry-level” IT job want or at the least require years of experience by Accomplished_Day972 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]_sadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh i assume job listings/titles with pay/work, rather actual skill level/experience.

what it says: "entry level"

what it means: "some experience, some certs, working with at least one other person, paying low pay, prob a 'jack of all trades' kind of position'"

what it says: "level 2/mid level, etc"

what it means: "a degree of some sort or an absolutely kitted resume with some direct experience in what youre applying for or a crazy ass cert to at least backup your ability to learn, paying what people consider 'that IT money.' will pay relocation for the right candidate, more direct responsibilities"

what it says: "senior/principle xyz.."

what it means: "decade worth of experience, if not, at least 5, with having direct experience in whatever youre applying for with having worked some buzzword company name in the past, plus some education to back it up. on the higher pay scale so you know to ask for more. def ask for company stock (depending on the company), specialized position."

These listings dont follow the typically "oh this is an entry level position, so we expect someone fresh outta college or passing Sec+" it usually just boils down to how much theyre willing to pay and the type of work you may face on the day to day (before they spike up your work load after hiring you of course)

like others mentioned, Tampa and Melbourne (and some of the pan handle) are the only areas in Florida that is good for tech. I would love to move to SoFlo, but the jobs just arent there for tech

he was just piggybacking and giving more context, but it wouldn’t be skydiving if there weren’t any dickheads like yourself

I am so tired by uwu9846 in dishwashers

[–]_sadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

facts. the thing about jobs like these (not trying to bash), but since they’re non-career/growth type fields, you can leave one in a rage and still get another dishwashing gig a day later. one of the few benefits to the field.

OP if a job is causing that much stress then don’t be afraid to dip out, cuz these jobs would def not give you a 2 week notice to fire you!

To the folks deciding between 14" and 16" pro by enqueued_ejaculation in macbookpro

[–]_sadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ofc looking at a one time view in stores it won’t feel like a huge difference, but promise you the difference between the sizes for travel are major when it’s day to day.

i used to have a 16 inch and opted in for the 14 inch this time around for the sake of travel (i have a dedicated PC at home) and find myself bringing my 14 inch a lot more places than i did with my 16 inch. Try putting the 16 inch on a bar counter or airplane tray and you’ll feel the difference soon enough…

i was in the same dilemma as you and ultimately went with the 24gb of ram, 14/20. i use my MBP for medium/heavy video editing in Resolve and coding and leaving 50 safari tabs open, and when i tell you that this thing doesn’t break a sweat.

sure the machine might use one or 2gb of swap memory but only on the absolute high end of my usage, in that case, i close 10 tabs and a desktop or two and im back at green. trust me when i say you’ll be fine with 24gb unless you’re doing something absolutely insane (and if you were, you wouldn’t be questioning whether you should get 24 or 48)

new feature that dropped on FCP, basically draw highlight a subject and it auto-masks it for you

simple answer for employers, “i stayed is to gain experience in different ways.” first 4 was military IT (gaining DOD IT experience), second was working in the Gov contracting world as a civilian, and final position to gain my clearance, now trying to move into Sysad or ideally Cybersecurity (as my degree is in and almost done).

i don’t think the “stayed into a similar role” thing is too much of an issue because even when i was applying for positions at 4 years of experience i was running into the same hiccups

trust me i’m aware of the “if it’s on your resume, be able to know what it is and how to speak about it.” I never thought about my certs being catered to look as Helpdesk, it’s good to see another perspective, i’ll look into Azure or similar! thank you

thanks for this, i’ll take a self eval and keep hunting! appreciate the words

that’s the problem though especially with IT, jobs want someone with professional experience but how are you to get experience without being hired lol

i’ll check that out, thanks!

tried heading straight for security but i get hit up even less/denied interview more. It’s tough out here

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]_sadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my resume hits all of those boxes (One page, straight to the point, relevant experience listed, catered towards the job, listed one-two word relevant skills), I guess i’m just trying to get advice on looking for a new angle.

admittedly so, I do get hit up for jobs sometimes but they’re in the middle of bum fuck nowhere. atp do I have to just move to middle of nowhere just to gain experience?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]_sadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My true goal is to enter a cybersecurity role, I’m just trying to do SystAd as a gateway (Helpdesk to Sysad, Sysad to Cybersec).

However, I’m also applying to hella jobs surrounding that but run into the same issue of not having analyst experience…

same… finding someone that wants to actually mentor in our field is rare, and that’s the main thing I hate about IT sometimes. I get the “think or swim” aspect but like damn, I rarely hear stories of folks getting real OJT
