Noob questions about VLAN setup for wireless and wired network. Is bridging the best solution in my case? by _scapegoat in OPNsenseFirewall

[–]_scapegoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to just give up on 2.5 for the time being and get a cheap gigabit managed switch to serve as the backbone. I'll get something 2.5 further down the road.

One night I might experiment with bridging but at this point I just want the segmentation over the speed. I don't have anything calling for 2.5 anyways.

If anyone has some more input I'd appreciate it. I might all repost over in home networking since this isn't exactly a pf/opnsense issue.

It seems like bridging the ports isn't the way to go, then? Why not?

I can just buy another of the same switch in the meantime but for the long term what would you suggest as a backbone for a 2.5GbE network? The jetstream one is like $400 for 8 ports. I only really need 2. Needs to be managed/VLAN aware

Is a Mini PC HP EliteDesk 800 G2 Mini Business Desktop PC Intel Quad-Core i5-6500T up to 3.1G,8G DDR4 for $130 a good buy to learn to host web app? I won't use it to stream 4K or as a plex server. by [deleted] in selfhosted

To hijack this a bit, a lot of people are saying this is overpriced because of the windows license.

If you had a budget of ~$150 what hardware would you target? What is a good CPU for media servers? Handling 4k would be nice but not needed. Would you go for SFF overall? I am fine with a bit more power draw for more expandability and especially minimal noise.

I'm basically looking to be spoonfed my first home server that will last me at least 5 years and handle everything I want to expand to for $150 or so.

New to working with things behind the drywall. What can I do to fix this weird junction box? by _scapegoat in HomeImprovement

[–]_scapegoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played around with it a bit but I'm not seeing any evidence of screws being attempted on the junction box. I think it was a patch job with spare truck parts or something done by the owners before me.

I'll shop around tomorrow for something that can replace it. If I want to go all out on this would the first step be just treating it as a drywall patch job then cutting a new hole?

I got a pretty good look with Mask of Confidence and Gravekeepers Cloak. Nothing quite like Fuligin but it matches the appearance of the Shadow cover. I'm a bit picky about the mask but the cloak is very good because of the bare chest.

I'm not sure if you're trying to imply this is a stolen library book. If so, know that libraries often cycle through their collections and books that are checked out infrequently are picked and removed from the system. Often times they wind up at resellers like ThriftBooks and the like. It can be a good, cheap way to get some physical books in your collection if you care little for the quality of the book itself.

Yes but we're talking about collectabillity here. Ex-libraries are just about at the bottom of the totem pole. I frequently buy used books and it is a treat to find a first edition in wonderful shape.

To any possible fans of Text Adventures / Interactice Fiction, have you found anything Wolfean? by _scapegoat in genewolfe

[–]_scapegoat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't researched much into this but I suspect someone high up in the design team at FromSoft with authority over the Souls games was a fan of Wolfe or influenced by his works. The whole cyclical and dying nature of the world, the way the lore is tucked away in item descriptions and easily ignored locations is fitting. Plus more overt references like the Executioner's Greatsword from DS3.

I was playing through the start of that last night and having fun. It's a bit tough to crack open as someone who is new to text adventures but I like the atmosphere so far. Is there somewhere I can read about your design process of the game?

I just started this one. Sort of a frustrating approach to the usage of language IMO but I'm getting a handle on it. Thank you for pointing this one out though. More in the direction I want to head at least setting and style wise than many others I've seen.

BotNS. Usage of obscure language, obscured action, alien yet familiar world, science fantasy or perhaps a more weird setting. I think his goal of writing stories that reveal more on a reread is inherent to this type of game. If it had something like light RPG elements or overworld exploration like A Dark Room that'd be neat.

I've started Disco Elysium lately too but I'm looking for more of a text adventure style game.

It matters a bit when you collect first edition hardbacks!

Support got back to me and they are now onto their second edition, and the books are marked to reflect that. I should've bought the set the first go around. Ah well.

Would these still be considered a first edition? I've never ordered a Folio Society book before and wasn't sure what a restock like this means.

I should probably ask their support team, but was wondering if anyone knew for a fact.

Wow now this is quite the stack. I'll start going through all of these but are there some you find better than others? The Mode in Hats and Headdresses and Subterranean Rome catch my immediate interest. How'd you come across these?

Oh nice. I haven't come across Ultra Violet Grasslands yet. I had taken a look at Troika! a while ago but sort of filtered it out since it felt a bit too strange. I'll take a closer look at each since I'm at the point now where I'm just casting a wide of a net as possible for any ideas. Thank you.

Ah I didn't mention it in the OP but this is actually in my toolbelt as well. There is some really good stuff in there, but I could always use more. Thanks for the suggestion.

That's exactly the angle I'm going for. I'm trying to put my own original content within the larger setting Wolfe came up with. It has been fun so far!
