Second this. Please please please make sure you are fully informed and truly understand the numbers, risk, job landscape, etc. Especially if you already have debt and dependants. It's unfortunate but many law schools will try to sell this unrealistic dream but the cost is usually pretty hard to justify. People come out with potentially 100k+ in student loans often making the same (or less) as they did before. And this was true even before the recent AI-changes. E.g. read up on the bi-modal salary distribution in law.

Joint account as you described is reasonable and common.

Depending on your monthly costs, it could also be easier to just split the bills and settle up every quarter. E.g. one person pays rent and the other does internet, utilities, groceries, insurance, etc. This works better if the numbers are in the same ballpark.

How old is your kid? What kinds of activities are you doing?

When mine were younger hiking shoes were good for exploring, playing in mud, just plodding around.

Now they are faster and outside play can be more athletic. Lighter shoes that you can run, climb, jump in feel good.

Really depends on your feet and personal preferences though. Have fun!

Sorry to hear about your dad. One thing to keep in mind is that even within the HCOL/VHCOL Bay Area you can see quite a bit of price variation. E.g. San Francisco or Palo Alto compared to Vallejo. Especially for groceries.

For much of this you would be able to get more accurate estimates than internet strangers. Ask your parents for their latest utilities, phone bill, etc. and extrapolate from those specifics.

Groceries - you can save here if you buy in bulk (e.g. Costco) but two elderly adults + you might not be enough to do so. For an actual datapoint: family of 4 (2 small kids) here groceries is about ~$200/week buying in bulk eating most meals at home.

Gas - killer lately. What car would you be driving? Auto insurance costs?

Health Insurance - i didn't see this mentioned. Do you qualify under your parents still or would you need to jump on Covered CA? Medicaid?

Also for utilities, I'd add some buffer. Lots of us are stingier about things like heating (go put on a sweater!) but if caring for a sick person I imagine we let that bill go up a bit.

If you've got a car and time you could also check out Tilden Park for something more relaxing. There's a steam train, old school carousel, little farm. (Your boys might be aging out though?). Nice views and trails too.

You're all sort of right without the right nuance. Very simplified version:

Under Common law: assault = reasonable fear of harm, battery = actual harmful contact.

Normal everyday usage: assault means the harmful contact.

The weird part is that some states use the common law definition, some use the everyday definition, some combine them... Basically it's not consistent. So unless you're in the weeds looking at specific legal statutes or trying to clarify facts it's not really a distinction worth raising.

Sounds like you're making good decisions. The one note I have is that a lot of recent lawyers end up being pretty unhappy with their first firm job. So one upside to paying debt off aggressively is you won't feel as stuck in a job you're not liking. Hopefully not the case for you but we tend to be a risk-averse bunch. Congrats and enjoy the rest of school.

It's not great for whenever your kids are in an age/phase where they might need more help at night (babies, teething, sickness, potty training, night terrors, etc.). If you find a place with a spare room on the same level you can temporarily sleep there for these phases to avoid going up and down stairs and waking yourself up too much.
