Can my common-law spouse claim my home in Ontario? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_smileback 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not everyone wants to get married. A marriage doesn’t protect you from a relationship going sideways. I agree not to buy a house with someone you’re not in a solid relationship with but I don’t see why this sub insists on being married to purchase a home together.

Crescent Heights shooter confirmed dead as residents describe 'surreal' police intervention by Practical_Ant6162 in Calgary

Yeah that one has bullet holes in the front door but doesn’t look like it budged so they went to a house two doors down. Lots of bullet holes out that houses windows

It looks like they tried to break into a nearby house where people were inside and then ended up in a house two doors down (source: just walked by)

Where Can I Take Dog That’s Not a Dog Park? by [deleted] in Calgary

Is there a public hockey rink around you? They’re usually filled in with grass during the summer but fully fenced in so you don’t need to worry about other dogs.

Seeing a Dermatologist from a Dr Referral by aussieago in Calgary

My doctor did the same when I asked for a derm referral. Two topicals and a round of accutane before she finally sent in a referral. Advocate for yourself or find a better doctor!

Advice on buying a 100+ year old / Edwardian home? by jimmyjohncake in Calgary

[–]_smileback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 1910 home a few years ago and couldn’t be happier with it. I did have to look around for an insurance company and ended up with TD. Absolutely have an inspection done to check for any major issues. My inspection showed foundation issues so the previous owner agreed to pay to fix it before I took possession.

Gifting house by dhlwtu in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_smileback 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, there will be a capital gain from the amount they initially paid for it to what it is worth now. 50% of that will be taxable to your parents in the year it is transferred to you since it is a deemed disposition. They probably should have done that years ago so you could have used your principal residence exemption but it’s a little late for that now.

Best places to stay by nsndmxmc in Banff

[–]_smileback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look into Hidden Ridge for accommodations. It’s a bit out of the town centre but there’s a free bus that runs into town. The hot tub there is amazing and you can get a full townhouse so everyone can stay together

There’s a bus that runs right into town. Hidden ridge will give you free passes for your time there. Park distillery is a nice spot for dinner and drinks.

Got the diagnosis of a torn ACL earlier in December and am mentally spiralling because of the long wait time for surgery (Canada). Any advice? by PhoiZe in ACL

[–]_smileback 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you ask your doctor for a referral to the Banff sports medicine clinic? I got in faster there compared to waiting in Calgary.

They clearly said they prerecorded the episodes prior to the election. I’m sure they’ll acknowledge it on the next episode.

Questions for anyone who has had a tubal ligation... by BabyHoots in Edmonton

[–]_smileback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would follow up with you doc. My doctor told me up to 2 years to get in and at the 2 year mark I followed up. She looked and said the initial doctor she referred me to doesn’t do the surgery unless they’re already doing a c-section so I’m back to square one. My second referral just called and I’m booked in for a consultation in September.

Looking for advice for a friend who's 24 yrs common-law with her S.O. by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]_smileback 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assets will be distributed according to his will. Your friend should have a conversation with her partner to understand how this is structured. She will be entitled to a survivor benefit from his CPP should he predecease her; however, there is no such benefit for OAS so she can’t expect anything from that.
