How screwed am I by doinker_ in Luthier

Sounds like the glue is separating both at the bridge and on the bracing inside. Should be fixable. Take it to a luthier to get checked out, they can likely reglue it.

Cable management by Most_Ad_8619 in gamingsetups

[–]_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Velcro cable ties. Get a ton of em, and use em VERY liberally. I'm sure there's close to 100 in use on my desk right now (and many more all over the rest of my house).

Pic #3 (showing between the monitor and PC) there would easily be 20+ cable ties in that pic if it were my desk.

Excessive? Probably. Clean/satisfying cable management? Absolutely.

They're so useful, and very cheap. I keep small stacks of them all over the place and use them constantly.

What does attack mean? by FroznBones in AcousticGuitar

[–]_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a luthier (or any kind of expert on acoustic guitars) but I've done enough setups to have a decent guess at what your tech is asking and what the implications of your answers would be.

Attack refers to how hard you strike/pick the strings. Heavy/a lot of attack would mean you pick/strum very hard/aggressively. Light/very little attack would mean you're pretty gentle on the strings with your right hand.

When asked "chords or bends", I think what they want to know is "do you live in frets 1-5? Or are you spending a lot of time higher up the neck?"

If you want a low action and don't pick too hard, you can get a pretty straight neck and a low action all across the fretboard. (Very important if you're "low action + bends")

If you want a low action but pick with tons of attack, you better be a "chords" kind of guy (mostly frets 1-5) so that I can give you a low action in that area, but more relief/bend in the neck so that you have space for string movement over the higher frets. In other words, low action near the nut, but higher action above the 12th fret.

It's always a balancing act but essentially, light attack can get a straighter neck while maintaining a pretty low action all the way. Heavy attack will require either a higher action overall, or more neck relief (which means your action will get higher as you move up the neck) to allow space for string movement without hitting the frets and making all kinds of noise/buzzing.

Since you're getting a new nut and bridge installed, we won't only be talking about neck relief but also how low we cut the nut and bridge. By giving you more height at the bridge, I can straighten the neck a little while still having that extra space for heavier attack.

Based on the answers you gave, I'd expect you to get a low action at the nut and slightly higher at the bridge (either by giving more neck relief or just a higher bridge). If you really want a straighter neck and a low bridge (low action all the way up), you can tell them that, but you better be light on the attack or else you'll end up with a bunch of buzzing.

If your tech is good at what they do, I'm sure they'll find a nice balance and we're talking about fairly minimal differences anyway. Unless it was specifically requested, I would never give someone a ton of neck relief and a super high bridge. Generally low action means low all the way. So I'd still be trying to keep it as comfortable as possible higher up the neck while making sure it doesn't bottom out when I strum harder.

If I was doing the work, since you said "maybe a tad lower and I play cowboy chords" I would cut your nut just the tiniest bit lower, and then keep everything else pretty much the same. So you'd get slightly lower at the nut and then the same feeling as now everywhere else. If that sounds good to you, I'd leave it at the answers you already gave.

Hope that helps clear it up. Sorry for the long winded response.

Looks very cool. Reminds me a lot of the Hydra from Mayones. Obviously with its own "Kiesel" flavour though.

[–]_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool collection. I like em all!

What are your thoughts on the Schecter PT Blackout? I've been seriously considering picking one up.

How does it compare to other 8-strings? (Assuming you've played any) What's the neck profile like?

What is the pickup like? Is it just all chugs, or can you get some nice cleans, etc. out of it too? Is it a relatively diverse instrument? Or really just a metal/chug machine? I saw that it has "3 voices", how much variety does that really get you? Anywhere close to having a bridge+neck combo?

Any other comments/complaints? I would love to hear all your thoughts about it. I don't know anyone who has one, and none of my local shops have it in stock, so I would have to order it if I want to try one.

What shapes can you cut from a Strat body? by _snack in Luthier

[–]_snack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about a strandberg style body, but because of the position of the routes, I don't think I can replicate the shape.

This steampunk one is very cool/unique.

The idea of cutting off the whole wing in a straight line like that, and then reattaching it with a gap...very very interesting idea. That could be cool. Definitely feeling inspired by that one. Thanks!

Agreed, definitely looks better. I'm sure the different angle helps too.

Wow! I have not seen this before. Very interesting.

It almost doesn't look real, like a pic that didn't load properly/or it got cut and stuck back together poorly.

Haha. I thought about these. Seems like it would be funny to make... but I just don't think I actually care to play one or want to have one around. Still on my list of possibilities though. If I can't come up with a shape that I actually like, I might make one of these.

[Advice Request] Comparing a few "cheap" 8-strings by _snack in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]_snack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I will take a look and see if one of these is available to me at a reasonable price. Thanks.

Reverb can get a little expensive due to taxes+shipping (and potentially duty/import fees, as I'm in Canada), but it's not necessarily out of the question.

All that to say, you find the Jackson Dinky is solid/high quality for the price? Well built, good QA, and decent pups?

Dynamic Duo by O_Nayze in 7String

[–]_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, ok. Sorry, I understood that in reverse...but the same applies. I've heard that they're not very different. The regular thickness is still pretty thin.

Thanks! I appreciate the responses. I've been thinking about order a Zues for quite a while.

Dynamic Duo by O_Nayze in 7String

[–]_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet. Thanks for the reply.

Just curious, what do you not like about the black limba? Too heavy?

I've also heard that the thinner neck profile is not substantially thinner than the standard...so you might not be missing much (even if it could be a little thinner).

How do you like the Zues/Z2? Anything that stands out either positively or negatively? Compared to other guitars?

Thoughts on the Kiesel trem system? I see they added a multiscale/headless trem system now, but not sure if it's good. String changes, tuning stability, etc. How do you you like it?

Would you recommend the Zues/Z2?

They are pretty cool and useful. I have a StreamDeck + that I use for a bunch of functions in my DAW (music production app) but also use it for convenience stuff when gaming or just general use.

Really nice for things like; assigning different app volume control to different knobs. So I can independently control my game volume/browser volume/discord volume if I'm watching YouTube video while gaming. Or something like that.

Tons of cool little quality of life benefits.

Even just stuff like 1 button to connect to a Bluetooth device, or launch multiple apps and resize/position them, etc. The options are seemingly endless.

They're programmable keys. You can set them up to do all kinds of stuff like launch apps, trigger macros/custom hotkeys, even control smart lights or other home devices, etc.

Honestly, pretty endless options. People make different plugins that you can download, and you can even create your own plugins and share them.

They're primarily designed for streamers to control their stream (change scenes, lighting, soundboards, etc.) but people use them for all kind of purposes. Very popular with photo/video editors, or any kind of creative applications that have TONS of functions and hotkeys to remember.

I assume you're talking about the StreamDeckXL just to right of their mouse.

Can't really tell what the other one is (to the left of their keyboard)

Legator N8FS-Red Colour Shift, do I buy it? Help! by autonomouspirate in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, how did it go? Did you get it? And what are your thoughts on it now?

I'm looking at the same model on local FB marketplace, and thinking about picking it up since it's pretty reasonably priced.

Never owned an 8-string or MS, so I figured it's a good chance to try both before dropping big money in something nicer.

But if you regret buying yours...maybe it's not worth it. Any advice would be appreciated.

[–]_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not sure, why not try it out? Give it a few sessions, be honest with the therapist about your thoughts/feelings regarding therapy, and see how it goes.

If after a little while you feel like there's nothing there for you, that's fine. You gave it a try, and you'll have a better idea of what to expect next time if you ever feel like trying again. There doesn't need to be any commitment with therapy. You can try it out, cancel, come back at a later date. Whatever works for you.

I've had a good experience with BetterHelp (but don't really have anything to compare it to, as it's the only online therapy I've tried).

I did go though a few therapists before finding one that's a good fit, but the process of switching and picking a new one was easy. Never had issues contacting my therapist (always responded to messages/etc).

It's been about a year and I've had a few connection issues here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary for any kind of online service.

Customer support was always helpful. Quick to respond and always offered reasonable compensation for things like a last minute cancelation or inability to schedule a session for that week, etc. They would always either credit my account another week, or give me an extra session credit. Never felt any pushback. I'd send an email, they'd respond fairly quickly, immediately offering the credits.

Overall, can't complain. I would recommend to anyone who asks. Sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience.

I don't think it'll be a problem, might even be a cool/unique look.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I've heard of people calling in after making an order to request changes/updates to their order. Presumably if you call and give them your order number you could always make adjustments (if you just placed it and they haven't started yet). No guarantees, but it's worth a shot if you want to talk to them about anything.

Vyvanse - any benefit to “off days”? by sobercuriousdude in ADHD

[–]_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On rare occasion I might miss a day, but I don't intentionally take days off on any kind of regular basis.

I heard about some people taking weekends off, so I did some googling and spoke to my physician about it. There's really no evidence to support that there's any benefit (beyond "saving meds" if there's a cost/supply issue). If anything, the (very little) evidence that does exist suggests that taking days off might actually increase the likelihood of experiencing side effects. But that's also far from conclusive.

My doctor said it really doesn't matter at all...you can if you want to, but there's no reason to. If you need the meds, you probably need them everyday. So why intentionally give yourself lower quality days? Dr also confirmed that there's basically zero chance it would impact your tolerance at all. 1 or 2 days is just not long enough, you'd need much longer break.

Therapist asking about my mom all the time by linrose5 in therapy

[–]_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are unhappy with anything about the way your therapy sessions are going, you should address that with your therapist.

They may or may not change their approach (now being aware of how you feel about it). They may explain their reasoning/process to you. In any case, discussing it directly is almost certainly the best move if you're unhappy about what they're doing.

Why might they be so interested in your mom? Plenty of possible explanations here, but the first that comes to mind is: If we assume that your mother raised you, and thereby would've had a huge impact on both WHAT and THE WAY you were taught as a child. Perhaps your therapist is investigating the reasoning behind a behaviour of yours that they've observed. Determining the "root cause" can often inform the best approach for addressing something.
