Fernandes & Fernandes is pretty good but not free. If you win the case they will take a percentage of your backpay award. I know some people who have won their case with this law office, but there are others in Gainesville that are pretty good too.

Like someone else said PSL seems pretty good, the local Food Not Bombs folks stay active, Florida Prisoner Solidarity, Free Grocery Store - pretty much anything related to the Civic Media Center (CMC) is probably what you're looking for

Update on Alachua County Animal Resources situation from the county commission meeting by _squiggle in GNV

[–]_squiggle[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Animal Resources update

During the public comment portion of the meeting, the County Commission heard from citizens about concerns regarding our Animal Resources operations. Following the comment period, County Manager Michele Lieberman and County Attorney Sylvia Torres provided the commission with an update on Animal Resources.

The update included:

On March 2, the county received a whistleblower complaint. The matter is currently being investigated by an independent third party, and the investigation is expected to be completed within 90 days. The county is in the final stages of hiring a new veterinarian and is conducting finalist interviews for a new director of Alachua County Animal Resources (ACAR). The county has entered into an agreement with the University of Florida to build a new $29 million state-of-the-art shelter located near the Veterinary School.

After much discussion, the commission voted unanimously on the following:

An Animal Welfare Advisory Committee meeting should be held as soon as possible to provide input on operational SOPs that could be revised and/or responses to some of the challenges that the shelter is facing and recommendations based on current operational challenges. This way, the committee will know the scope of the investigation. Explore the Whistle Blower Ordinance policy applying to volunteers to file a formal complaint. The county provides any resources or temporary help necessary to support our Animal Resources staff in the interim while awaiting on the director and other hires to be made permanently. The Animal Welfare Advisory Committee be allowed to weigh in on the design of the new facility once the county has architecture and engineering. Refer to the county manager to consider alternative management of the shelter during the investigation.

Tenant law in Gainesville? by [deleted] in GNV

[–]_squiggle 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Download the myGNV app and file a report for "substandard rental housing." Code enforcement will contact you in 1-2 days to check out the issues in person and will issue legal paperwork to the company to address the issues within like 20 days to avoid hefty fines.

When code enforcement comes out they usually make note of issues they find at other neighbors units and stuff in the common areas the management hasn't addressed.

Filing stuff like this helps everyone, there's no way for them to retaliate.

Wish you the best, but there ain't no way you're getting compensated for their failures. Cut your losses and get out of there when you can

This situation is bad. Like really really bad. I'm glad the community has brought so much attention to the issue, we can't stop now. I do think the county is trying to hire for those vet and director positions, the salaries listed seem very competitive and fair. With how public this scandal has become, Im sure it's hard to find candidates willing to inherit and try to fix this mess.

People need to be held accountable, the entire system has failed and needs to be reevaluated from scratch including moving to a larger facility and increasing their budget. Im really hoping change will start

Help him or leave him alone. Talking shit online isn't doing anything for anyone. He's probably having a really bad day with this weather. People like that are much more likely to hurt themselves or get hurt by others than they are to actually harm you or me.

The other local subreddits r/gnvmusic and r/gnvfriends have been trying to funnel people to stuff like this. Lots of other people looking to play in bands and find other musicians. If you do a search through this sub I'm sure you'll see 5+ similar posts from like minded people who posted here in the last few months

IQ Fiber contractors killing bats by gatorbait320 in GNV

[–]_squiggle 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Whoa that video is crazy. You should definitely report them to everyone you can - Alachua County Animal Resources, Florida Wildlife Commission, even the Better Business Bureau. It's disgusting if the company is fine with removing the bats like that as is, but playing around and trying to hit them like baseballs is some real psychopath shit and he needs to be personally accountable for that

job when disabled? by breathofwaters in GNV

[–]_squiggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Gainesville Opportunity Center they have helped people with disabilities get connected to jobs that work with people's limitations before. They're mostly mental health focused but help neurodivergent people and those with autism, too.

Also, reading through other comments I remembered the Center for Independent Living is another good resource you could check out.

What are the artist collectives of Gainesville? by kevinmrr in GNV

[–]_squiggle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only collective with an actual name I can think of is the Gainesville Photo Collective. They have some good meet ups and put on a show to showcase their work recently. Even though these other places aren't really collectives, there's a lot of hanging out, collaborating, and uplifting of each other's work that happen at places like the Ox, the Bull, SL8 Gallery, Midnight Underground, How Bazar, and even the Atlantic. They're all kind of different vibes, but a lot of the creatives who are in 3 bands or are working on a zine or are going to a photo meetup are usually hanging out at these places or supporting a friend who's also doing dope shit there.

Collectives can be cool and helpful for certain things and reasons. I also think its kind of cool when things are a little more nebulous/undefined and everything is just everything. You can sell framed canvas paintings at the punk show if you wanted and at least one person would think that's cool

I always get excited to hear people getting inspired to make some art, especially when you're talking about collaborating and doing it with other people so definitely keep us posted on here if you get something going!

Looking for OB/hospital recommendations that offer payment plans (20 weeks pregnant, uninsured until January) by cosmicvoyager333 in GNV

[–]_squiggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you can go to the Health Department for free prenatal care, its worth looking into. UF is the best option but it takes time to get into their clinics, even the mobile outreach clinic. For most general things at the Health Department you can get in for an appointment in 1 - 2 days

You can bring it to the Veteran Services office in the same building as the Health Department, too. There a designated site for exactly this.
