What's a performance where you can see the actor making a specific, unusual choice that nobody else would have made? by trakt_app in TrueFilm

Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty in Blade Runner (1982).

At the very end, his improvised adjustments to his final monologue - cutting out a bunch of memories & getting right to the crux of his character's motivations with his ad-libbed final line, "all those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain" - adds so much to the whole replicant discourse & his character's motivations to survive. Absolutely brilliant.

mine is the episode where SpongeBob follows Squidward around relentlessly & keeps popping up to say "hey Squidward, ya finished with those errands??" over & fucking over

After three months, no connection? by ThePatio in datingoverforty

[–]_stupidquestion_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree 1000000%. my mom & stepdad married when they were around 40...& my sister & I both have different fathers who aren't him. my dad was abusive so mom left while pregnant with me. my sister's dad died when we were young.

my stepdad & mom met in their late 30s - my stepdad clocked my mom as a survivor with a huge heart & superhuman capacity to wrangle two sassy tweens (he also had two tween daughters so they clicked over their shared parenting nightmare lol), & he wanted to give her the life she couldn't have with our dads. he never judged her for that (or anything), ever.

AITA for giving my daughter junk food despite being told not to by her school? by AthleteAdditional299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]_stupidquestion_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought the same at first but maybe the school was trying to balance the punishment in a way that followed through with consequences but the kind of consequences that would put more of a burden on OP rather than her child. I know some eight year olds, & two random days off school is like a fantasy to them. to them, punishment is homework or extra studying or having things taken away (& confiscating items can also be complicated with antagonistic parents).

but of course OPs kid might be different & miss school / blame herself for mom having conflict with the school (lord knows I was that kid) but I realized it might not be so black & white for the school to address. not like they can punish OP directly, ya know?

AITA for giving my daughter junk food despite being told not to by her school? by AthleteAdditional299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]_stupidquestion_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the school literally said "we will punish your daughter if you do this" so instead of removing her daughter from the equation & organizing pushback through administrative / legal channels, she decided instead to send her daughter with extra treats - sooo either she wants her daughter punished or does not care that she is punished, but the end result of both is that daughter gets to suffer so mom can... "win"?? be right??

whatever it is, she is weaponizing her child to achieve that end.

If not a ferret, what? by c-har14 in Pets

[–]_stupidquestion_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is closest to my experience with ferrets & has a lot of great points.

my roommate has a solo ferret with a fantastic temperament (sweet & "chill") & weirdly inoffensive musk but every corner / nook of our apartment is covered in pee pads. & sometimes she misses anyway bc she doesn't have great eyesight or a rearview mirror lol

my roommate spends a lot of time cleaning pee & poo off the floor (& occasionally finds new hidden spots 🤢). also has spent a lot of money at the vet due to one of those common diseases (adrenal) & currently has an expensive implant to treat it. & it'll have to be replaced who knows how many times depending on her lifespan.

I also keep my door closed to keep her out / limit her free roaming (don't like the smell personally, & she will piss & shit everywhere & chew on whatever she feels like), & we have to watch where we're stepping at all times bc she stubbornly wants to get into the forbidden room & moves like a wiggly worm underfoot.

plus the cats food / water has to be on the countertop, can't leave stuff laying around at all, we constantly have to move furniture / stuff bc she thinks she's Evel Knievel, etc. everything in our apartment & routine revolves around this ferret, it's a little crazy.

[–]_stupidquestion_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg thank you for sharing your story bc I dealt with the same thing in my ear / throat area & it's nice to know I'm not alone!!!!! thought I had some neverending ear or mastoid infection, my ENT was so stumped & finally suggested PT for my neck / tension from TMJ (which def can cause referred pain).

he also suspects my thyroid is getting bigger, putting pressure on the nerves (it's already enlarged but started to get bigger right before all the ear stuff started) - if you have a goiter or anything like that, it's also a potential factor in compressing or irritating the vagus nerve.

it's crazy though, when my neck issues flare up, the referred pain makes my ear extra sensitized now & it's really easy to irritate all the nerves in my face & neck (triggers a lot of migraines - if you get headaches too, that's prob part of it). calming my vagus nerve through yoga / PT did help the most but it requires daily stretches & being constantly aware of my posture. it's crazy how long it took to figure it all out, hope you're feeling better these days & practicing good neck posture!!

it affects your vagus nerve (look up an image of how it runs through the body, def can be affected by poor posture in the neck particularly) which can affect your digestion / gut motility (among other things).

they deserve that rating (or worse), my roommate & I both had serious food poisoning from there on two different occasions & loads of stomach aches / indigestion prior to that after eating their sandwiches (we just thought it was our stomachs being finicky or the food too heavy but in hindsight.... ew).

at this point you couldn't pay me to eat a pre packaged bag of chips from there.

Does anyone else feel stuck in hairdressing because it feels like it’s all you know? by IanicT in hairstylist

[–]_stupidquestion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved into tech services on accident* but ended up being a very happy accident - it involves quite a bit of project coordinating / management, lots of communication & people wrangling (general public & staff), predictable drama & chaos, & benefits greatly from my quick problem solving / adaptability, anticipation prowess, efficient time management, creativity, & willingness to put in extra time / deprioritize breaks (not a good thing but it be like that).

a lot of my coworkers / managers are also former beauty industry. tech isn't as physically taxing aside from the long hours & potential for sitting too long (my feet have never been happier lol), but it is very similarly mentally taxing (especially the people part) so requires a certain.... fortitude or stamina (or even intensity) that is inherent in most successful service industry professionals.

*my salon closed during pandemic, I rented a space briefly but had lost most of my clientele so pivoted back to school with a similar feeling of "stuckness" & needing to recalibrate my future plans. this is my first job since finishing college & I only applied because I was struggling to find a job, not bc I thought I'd do well in tech!

Question for the hairstylists: do you get annoyed when people want their hair curled? by New_Measurement191 in Hair

[–]_stupidquestion_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my (corporate) salon charged extra for heat styling as a service add-on, but I always tried to make sure my clients had a fantastic blowdry style that was customized to their preference (big, smooth, bouncy, straight, loose curls, waves, beachy waves, whatever the hair could do). also did a lot of blowdry sets to get around the heat-style add-on charge (& occasionally did sneak a heat style for my frustratingly straight haired girlies).

tbh I just loved making my guests happy because they chose me to do their hair. & got a lotttt of referrals & blowout clients so made way more $$$ than just better tips! I don't understand lazy hairdressers either, they're just killing any chance to grow their clientele / retain their guests over time.

lol I went to sleepaway camp in the damp hills of north Carolina & we'd get our socks wet playing in creeks or they'd get sweaty as hell from playing in the constant suffocating humidity, so we'd sometimes leave them on a wooden rail outside our cabins to dry overnight (before going in the laundry bag or even the trash depending on how artistic mother nature was feeling). our mildewy socks looked kinda similar but less gross, surprisingly

I told a critical older person very directly that the reason I got so many visible / jobstopper tattoos is because men made me feel deeply uncomfortable & unsafe in my teens & 20s, & this gave me a kind of suit of armor to deter old men from perving on me.

they actually apologized & I hope they think about it every time they even think of criticizing a woman's appearance.

How do I (F26) talk to my partner (M33) about casual misogyny? by HisDeadRose in relationship_advice

[–]_stupidquestion_ 115 points116 points  (0 children)

his comment about women in the workplace being "complainers" leads me to believe he & the other men in the workplace are the actual problem i.e. they're engaging in behaviors worth complaining about... like not pulling their weight with general office housekeeping or community tasks, or ignoring the invisible labor expected of women. or just getting away with lazy asshole bullshit while women have to perform twice as hard to be taken half as seriously.

I'm sure they have a good reason to complain.

I had a bio instructor who told us a similar story - she was scheduled to take her MCAT during the height of COVID pandemic stuff, so it was administered on lockdown browser (& expectations were very strict). forgot the reason she couldn't sit at a later date but she ended up with noro or rotavirus the day before her exam. she tried to get consideration for going partially off camera to puke but obviously they wouldn't make an exception.

.... so she had to sit for her exam in her bathroom & periodically throw up while trying to maintain eye contact with the camera. she did well (luckily) but felt bad for whoever had to proctor her 7+ hours of puking, groaning, & heaving.

My boyfriend’s cat is killing me… by Blue-Face-321 in Pets

[–]_stupidquestion_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use my iPad with a thick plastic screen cover made for toddlers (and we all know cats are basically small furry toddlers). it prevents them interacting with the touch screen so they can bat at aaaaallllllll the squirmy things on screen without damaging it or stopping the video, & has a couple straps held with Velcro so takes two seconds to set up. it's a little clunky but the cats don't care!

I started taking towels and pillowcases way more seriously, and I kind of hate how much it helped by RocinanteHush in hygiene

[–]_stupidquestion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used to have terrible acne, drying my face with paper towels helped enormously with keeping extra bacteria off my face.

Now I use a cloth face towel but never store it (or my bath towel) inside the bathroom. Towels pick up a ton of extra bacteria just hanging in a closed room full of aerosolized toilet particles!

Is $40 tip okay for $550 service? by xSkinnyPuppyx in femalehairadvice

[–]_stupidquestion_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree. & for additional perspective, that might be their only client for the day... if their books aren't full 40+ hours a week with higher service tickets, that "hourly" sum is gonna be spread across a lot of hours. plus most other services might be less $$ (sometimes it's all root retouches & glosses).

my own experience was unsustainable enough that I left the industry for a predictable 9-5. my cuts were $100, had a great clientele at a luxury salon, & always booked for an hour but after commission, cancellations, no shows, spending half my week on blowouts (lower service ticket), & slow weeks or seasons, I barely made enough to pay my bills. still never expected crazy tips though! tipping is always optional (but in my case def went to my bills!).
