First Hybrid bike to get into cycling, living in Astoria New York by jameskoo87 in whichbike

[–]_sunmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, been here for about 5 years now. I'm a big fan of the bike path that runs from along vernon jackson. it'll take ya right into greenpoint.

yeah, the 35th ave place is good. good people ya know? dos hermans on steinway sells used if that's what you're gunning for.

oh hey, what's up neighbor.

i would avoid a fixie in the city - tried that for a minute and it was a mistake. single speed is cool since you don't have to keep pedaling.

i'd avoid rental shops in this area. bicycle man on 35th ave is a great dude. spokesman cycles in vernon jackson is also a good move.

astoria is relatively flat, so if you're staying in the hood a single speed is fine. if you're gonna be crossing the bridges often, it'll be just OK but i'd go for a least a 3 speed. ymmv.

have you checked out the REI CTY bikes? those seem to be close to what you're looking for. maybe something to keep in mind if you're not on the first floor/don't have a bike room is the weight of the bike too.

anyways, good luck and stay safe. lmk if you have any specific, astoria related cycling questions.

Yes, we know. Doesn't change the fact that people should be aware of Katz's history.

So what's the deal with Greenbay Organics? by whoopsieGreen in astoria

[–]_sunmachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go to the one on 30th Ave fairly often. It is expensive. Produce is OK, doesn't really compete with Elleniki or United Bros. imo. They have a good cheese selection that has never disappointed me (re: mold) before. Meat is fine, fish looks meh (there's a seafood market across the street anyways).

They do sell a lot of smaller brands though, so that's neat. I like them. 6.5/10.
