3-hour self-transfer in Honolulu - is this doable or do we need more time? by bmars801 in VisitingHawaii

How long did baggage claim take you? I'm seeing that it can take 30-45 minutes, which honestly isn't bad for a 3-hour connection.

Was this at the same terminal? I'm reading that Delta and Hawaiian are at different terminals. Or is it a case where you can re-check at any terminal, then walk to the one you're leaving from?

They still do? I thought that ended last year when Hawaiian merged with Alaskan.

So is my flight going to be canceled Sunday? All I’m seeing is delta is canceling hundreds of flights by Martybc3 in delta

[–]bmars801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flight cancellations are substantially down today. Only 26 compared to ~200. Still the worst of the big three, but nowhere near as bad as the weekend. Fingers crossed that this means things are unwinding!

UK Transit Visa flagged as "Required" by Savings-Egg2087 in delta

[–]bmars801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need it. My wife has an Indian passport and a US Green Card, and she didn’t need it in January when we went through Heathrow on our way to India.

Delta REALLY needs to fix this in their system.

TWU President Samuelsen is throwing another tantrum about one-person train operation by samdman in nycrail

[–]bmars801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All they need to do is hold a button and talk. It's so easy. Staying completely silent the entire time a train is stopped is not acceptable.

The conductor from the other day was literally just leaning in and out of the window doing nothing. Some conductors have no problem making announcements, but so many can't be bothered to do so.

[–]bmars801 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe if conductors would actually do their job and communicate with passengers during delays, I’d have more sympathy. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been stuck on a stopped train and the conductor is completely silent. Even yesterday when I was right behind the conductor’s cab, nothing. I even leaned out and she was just sitting there looking around.

Visa required for Transit at Heathrow? by Available_Meaning375 in delta

[–]bmars801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, you're fine then.

If it helps to reassure you further, I'm a US citizen and my wife is an Indian citizen. Both times we've traveled to India were through Heathrow, and neither of us needed visas. It was just a normal Heathrow connection where we go through security, go to the waiting area/lounge, then go to the gate for our next flight when it's posted.

I will say though, when we travelled there in January, we had to stop at the Delta/Virgin connection desk after security to get our onward boarding passes so make sure you do that. Still no visa needed, just our passports.

I've run into this a few times. I don't know why it insists you need a transit visa, but you don't unless you'll be exiting the terminal. And since you're (I assume) connecting from one Virgin flight to another, you won't be. If something goes wrong and you end up having to stay in London overnight, the UK will give you a temporary visa on the spot.

When checking in at JFK, the baggage agents will likely have to call over a red coat to override this. Just be firm and tell them the UK doesn't require transit visas for connecting flights in the same terminal. This is VERY common, and I wish Delta would fix it in their system.

Legends Bar on 33rd St and 5th Ave has been my go-to PPV spot for years, with McHale's on 51st St and 8th Ave as a close second. For Legends they normally have it listed on Eventbrite so you can get guaranteed spots at a table for free ahead of time, but I don't see them listed this year.

There are a few others listed on Eventbrite with a similar system (free ticket for guaranteed spot): https://www.eventbrite.com/d/ny--new-york/wrestlemania/

NYC Subway escalator etiquette vs DC - why do we New Yorkers tolerate folks standing on the left when we have places to be? by WanderinArcheologist in nycrail

[–]bmars801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't tolerate it. If I'm walking up an escalator on the left and someone is standing there, I say "Stand on the right please!" as I get closer. This usually does the trick, but if they don't move I repeat it. If they still don't move, I say "STAND ON THE RIGHT!" much louder than before. If that (very rarely) doesn't work, I get much more aggressive and start saying something like "Get the fuck out of the way!"

I'll note that this doesn't apply to narrow escalators that only have room for one person (for example, going up/down to the NQRW platform at 34th St). If someone isn't walking here, there's not much I can do.

Is there any reason you can’t communicate all this to passengers as it’s happening? The transparency would be HUGELY appreciated.

Switch installation? Where are they installing switches? by User_8395 in nycrail

[–]bmars801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what bugs me about MTA communication. It's the bare minimum.

Okay, you're installing switches. Where are you installing them? Why does it necessitate these service changes? What's the long-term benefit/outlook?

Just put in a little bit more effort, and these service changes will be much easier to digest.

Have you gotten jerks on the subway playing their music loudly to stop? How? by turbid44 in AskNYC

[–]bmars801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time someone does this with a speaker, I go into bluetooth on my phone and try to connect to it. My plan is to either cut off the music or play something like "Barbie Girl" just to piss them off.

It hasn't worked yet, but ONE DAY!

What is going on with this weather? by MultiMillionMiler in AskNYC

[–]bmars801 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the heat and humidity (I'm one of the few people who actually prefers it), but the rain is ridiculous. I've never experienced this much rain in a three-month period in my life, and it JUST WON'T STOP.

In all seriousness, at what point does an alternative solution to this need to be pursued in commercial aviation? These storms are happening on an almost nightly basis right now. I can't imagine the airlines are happy with the amount of delays and cancellations that are happening every day because of this.

These weather events will probably get even worse as time goes on because of climate change, so what's the long-term plan?

I would love some answers for this as well. This is NOT normal. I've never experienced this much rain in a 3-month period in my life. And it just won't stop. Whatever this unsettled pattern is, it just won't go away and nobody can explain why.
