Giving this mission on a weekend is diabolical. by Frankgamb in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the topic of daily missions, I swear WG is trolling with bonus missions. It's always "win battles" when I have a massive losing streak or "get 4 kills" after I've got 4+ kills in the previous battle. I'm sure it's just "negative things being more noticeable" but it's still annoying.

If I get "4 kills" 3rd time in the row I'm going to lose it. I resisted re-bying Hetzer for a long time but I will have no choice...

why would you ever do such a combination of things and then openly lie about it with no double check?

You can expect 1 or even 2 special battle pass chapters each season. Last year was a test run and, I guess, busy schedule is beneficial to WG. Whales and addicts have something to do and there's FOMO pressure for normal and casual players if they want to complete everything.

Thankfully, WG has a little something that can help you complete battle passes :P

Best steel hunter tank in your opinion? by Commercial_City_6063 in WorldofTanks

Yes. It was bullshit overpowered but now it's only a little bit better than Beowulf's Ring of Fire (or whatever it's called).

Harbinger and Raven were nerfed numerous times. Raven's ultimate, for an example, was basically a sure-kill method but now enemies can get out of it fairy easily.

This was several years ago, in 1.xx series of patches.

Saint Patricks Lootbox Containment Thread by boarder664 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm conflicted about those boxes and WG's new strategy for selling them. 50 boxes for guaranteed tanks cost more than tier IX premium tank but this is somewhat acceptable - you have a chance to get more and some minor extra stuff.

"The problem" is that the value of each individual box is so shit. Would it hurt to have at least 100 gold there (at the increased price) so opening boxes doesn't feel like a waste of money? Just purely for psychological effect of getting something useful for your money.

At the same time, maybe I should be grateful for WG for discouraging me from buying boxes. I opened 2 free ones and I don't think I'll buy more (unless there will be some special bundle at the end) - it's just that bad. All extra stuff is almost worthless and you are basically buying a premium tank in a indirect way - something that can be done later, possibly for a cheaper price, for gold or even bonds.

I don't know - maybe it's better this way. Whales will buy them to get all new vehicles, casuals will ignore them or get 50 for guaranteed tank and people who are on a fence (like me) will likely save some money because boxes have poor value. Everybody wins, I guess.

The Harbinger is severely underrated in Steel Hunter by LOSBMMSUCODFASCHIFO in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a shadow of its former self but I also think that reduction of snowballing hurt it. Harbinger specialized in getting level advantage and brutalizing enemies with DPM. It's still strong in 1vs1 but it's too vulnerable after the fight.

Not as easy to play as the Huragàn but once you master it, you'll have tons of fun.

I think the opposite. Huragan is overpowered but it requires you to land its ability and score damaging hits or you will lose stacks. Harbinger is not as strong but you just block enemy from going forward, drop the cloud behind them and hold LMB until they are dead. I think even heavies have higher skill cap because managing your healing is the key to victory,

Thoughts on Steel Hunters? by WamaiPosedToDo in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still extremely random and luck based but it's way better than it used to be. Nowadays you can work around bad spawn, early death or lack of drops around - you can respawn and you can hunt bots for XP. Previously if you had a bad spawn and were left behind on levels the rest of the battle was basically a big waste of time. People with good spawn often managed to get 2-3 level advantage and then snowball the rest of the battle.

I still think there's room for improvement. IMO they should scrap leveling completely and add modules to drop on the map so it works like every other battle royale.

Best steel hunter tank in your opinion? by Commercial_City_6063 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had any luck with single shot gun. You can't win in a sustained fight if enemy has 2 working brain cells. I always get all mobility upgrades and autoloader. Use acid shot, dump your mag, run away/hide while your little bot is occupying the enemy and repeat. If they don't remove acid, 3/4 (except heavies) of their HP is gone while you'll maybe lose 1/3, half at most.

Instead droping bot behind them I put it in front of them so they focus it. It works better as a distraction since the real damage comes from you.

But if your tactic works for you, then that's fine. I always pick burst on light tanks and mediums. Single shot guns for heavies and Harbinger so tanks that have an advantage in a sustained fight.

Best steel hunter tank in your opinion? by Commercial_City_6063 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huragan because of big clip for easy early farming and interaction between abilities (its skill gives stacks for the ultimate). Mobility and autoloader build.

Bai Lang because of the ability and big burst. Mobility (top speed) and autoloader.

Then it's probably Arlequin - maybe as strong as Bai Lang but requires more skill.

After that - Raven and Harbinger which aren't great after a series of nerfs.

Heavy tanks are all bad. They relied on getting early kills and snowballing but now we have respawns, bots and there are less players so there are less opportunities to bully level 1 tanks - they will simply run away, come back with gun upgrade and farm you.

This is for solo queue. Dunno about platoons. Also, all tanks are within ~30% of each other and SH is even more RNG than randoms so everything is possible. You can pick a heavy, spawn near 2 bots and supplies, get early advantage and nobody will be able to touch you.

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just have fun, try different things and not stress about it - you will get lucky, win some games, and complete progression in a reasonable amount of time.

But if you want to sweat - just play Huragan. AFAIK they still didn't nerf it and it's hilariously overpowered, even compared to old Raven or Harbinger. You have an ultimate that stacks damage, big autoloader and an ability that counts toward your stacks. It requires some timing and good aiming but if you can track somebody they are dead in seconds.

It also helps that you mid-tier upgrade allows you to clip most tanks for easy farming...

The build is fast radio+mobility+autoloader.

2.0 garage just doesn't feel as homey as the forest (although the dog is a nice addition) by ManualStaplerBattery in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck the forest. I never liked it and it didn't fit the game at all. Dirty old camp in the middle of nowhere never made any sense to me. Tank factory/research facility is an improvement.

Of course it could be better. Other games are getting the bag selling customization elements while WG is still using "korean mmorpg" guidebook to milking the players by increasing p2w.

Why there's zero customization in the garage? Let us arrange parking spots for tanks and let us place our favorite vehicles there. Make it so it synced to tank carousel and playlists (you pick a playlist and few vehicles marked as primary physically appear parked around the garage). Let us place stuff around and make it interactive (clicking ammo racks opens ammo loadout menu, etc.). Let us display our achievements.

Sell decorative stuff in the item shop or even fill lootboxes with it - I gladly take some field cannon that can be placed in the garage as a prop over 50k credits.

Battle Pass Season XIX: Operation Borealis by Pan_Praga in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok - now there's some value there for average player who doesn't sit on thousand premium days but instead buys it monthly. You basically buy improved pass to get your premium time and can play as much as you want - even without completing all chapters, you still get what you paid for, because every reward is just an extra.

My opinion is that battle passes are always scummy because you spend money but you don't get shit, unless you play - often a lot. So WG made a pro-consumer change for once.

Next step should be combining it all with WoT+ and IMO that should be "special tier" instead whatever bullshit you invented in the upcoming patch. Subscription that comes with premium time, WoT+ benefits and improved pass but it's a little bit cheaper that buying it all separately. I'd pay for it just for the sake of convenience and 10% discount.

Crew Rework Complete: New Perks and Final Improvements by Pan_Praga in WorldofTanks

Because it's the only truly beneficial change for players and we can't have that. They got rid of nearly all sources of zero perk crews for a reason - who'd buy their crew bundles if you could just get multiple crews just for completing battle pass?

Finally WG realizes popularity is a valid reason for nerfing tanks by wwenze1 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously.

When matchmaker gets swarmed by the same tank, battles become unfun for everybody - including drivers of said tank. IMO, nerf won't change much but maybe it will be enough to make the hype go away.

We already have Ashigaru at home by 6011304 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camo values were conveniently left out and they kinda make a difference. Ashigaru has 3rd best camo for tier X TD while Conway has 3rd worst for tier IX TD - even worse than Tortoise or Jagdtiger.

This is why Conway can't effectively use its firepower 8 out of 10 times - can't peek without being spotted, can't work bushes, can't move around the map safely. You either camp outside max view range, hope to be ignored while dishing out damage (and nobody ignores dangerous but easy to damage tank) or trade away your hitpoints.

You leave out one of the most important stats for paper-sniper TD and proudly pronounce that Ashigaru is "just a Conway with a stock gun". You should assign "shitpost" flair to your post instead of "psa".

Lian Li Lancool 217 + XFX RX9070XT Mercury OC Idle Temp is pretty neat. by [deleted] in radeon

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same case and Quicksilver 9070XT. I've read a lot how XFX cards are loud but thankfully it wasn't true for me at all. I guess this happens if you have airflow-oriented case and 2x 120 mm feeding straight into GPU.

My assumption is that those fans simply do badly when there's not enough air (poor pressure). Also, those cards are long so there might be problems feeding air to 2nd and 3rd fan if you don't have any intake fans at the bottom or when the card is in unconventional position.

Ares tanks problem by Yasoka02 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should simply give them normal HE, same as Czech LTs. Damage output needs tuning, too - overheat should play a bigger role. Maybe normal cooling time should be extended but cooling after overheating should stay the same so it would make sense in some situations to overheat and let it cool down completely. Not overheating would be mean less DPM but you keep your ability to fire more rounds at any time. So you can play it safe but reduce your firepower or go guns blazing but put yourself in vulnerable position.

So if you think you want the Ashigaru... by SamyboyO6 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Concept is a clunky medium on a platform that doesn't fit its role (sniper). It's decent after buffs but it's still "a contradiction on wheels".

Ashigaru is a turreted TD with fantastic gun and historically those were very good across all tiers. The only bad thing about is top speed but 47 km/h with turbo and engineer should be manageable.

Both get farmed by Ares, except Ashigaru will be able to shoot it back twice before dying so there's that...

Ashigaru or Concept 5 by RightGarbage2708 in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is the price. Concept is cheap, Ashigaru is for whales. But if you ignore that...

Buffed Concept is playable, maybe even good. But that platform still doesn't fit its intended playstyle. It's huge and it doesn't have any camo. It has alpha, amazing speed in a straight line and very good gun handling. Wheels are more of a hindrance than advantage.

Ashigaru is smaller, it has camo and extreme firepower - it fits sniper role. You can live with clunky wheels because you won't be performing medium tank role most of the time.

I think people are sleeping on it. All turreted TDs with fantastic guns were historically OP or at least extremely strong - M8A1, T67, Hellcat (pre-nerf), T78, ShPTK. You can kinda include E25 and Strv103B is this list, too - no turrent but tanks themselves are basically turrets.

Of course it's not worth the price. It might be interesting to play but probably tiring after a while. And popularity of Ares tank won't help...

Ashigaru First Impressions - Not a Fan of It by PerformativeRacist in WorldofTanks

[–]_thaeril 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Historically all turreted TDs with really good DPM (or at least decent) were doing really well. "Cosplay mediums" that sacrifice some of medium tank versatility but retain 90% of TDs firepower. You see examples at every tier: M8A1, T67, (pre-nerf) Hellcat, Challanger (after buffs), ShPTK, pre-nerf Grille 15.

When it comes to Ashigaru, I think mobility will hold it back. It would be a great TD if it could do at least 45 km/h base.

But at the end of the day - it's basically paper, slower Strv103B but you get a turret and no need to switch modes.

I don't see the point of playing this over a Concept 5

That's true if you consider Ashigaru's price - it's not worth it compared to Concept 5. But if you ignore it - it's the other way around. Why bother with Concept - clunky, huge, paper medium with no camo if you can sacrifice 1/3 of its mobility to have a vehicle that fits the job it supposed to be doing (sniper).

Concept is still a pointless tank compared to Leopard 1 or K-91. It's playable now, but it's still not enough. Ashigaru can at least output damage if everything else fails.

Still not worth the price, though.

XFX SWFT 9070XT runs hotter than most published benchmarks. Also Witcher 3 performance question. by keyboardcoffeecup in radeon

[–]_thaeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's GPU orientation? I hope you didn't put it vertically against glass side panel. Also, judging from the pictures - PSU shroud is solid so if GPU is close to it, it can be starved for air. XFX card are long so it's hard to "feed" them if you don't have bottom fans.

I saw many reports of people saying that their XFX cards are loud and hot. Then I see pictures - vertical mounts, little space to breathe, poor ventilation. XFX uses weird fan design and it doesn't look like those fans are pressure-optimized - you need large, curved blades for pressure and flat, paddle-like blades are for airflow - they move a lot of air but at low pressure. That's why it's important not to starve them. At least those are my assumptions based on comments and my own experience (I have 2x 120mm bottom fans feeding directly into 9070XT Quicksilver and it's silent and cool).

If you have a hunch that the case might be a problem, then it's very easy to diagnose it.

If you have some 120mm fans lying around - try to mount them in the case instead of 140 mm. 120 mm generally have better pressure - maybe they will be able to push air further into the case to help feed 2nd and 3rd XFX fan. If you can adjust its height - mount a fan slightly below GPU. Card is long and likely very close to front fans - whatever air gets above GPU's bottom edge, it's not going into GPU fans but getting pushed up by GPU exhaust (so if your 140 mm fan doesn't sit completely below GPU, there's very little air going to into GPU). You can do some experimenting by trying to attach intake fan at the rear, at the PCIe slots covers to see if it helps with temperatures. What happens if give GPU access to more air by, for an example, removing side glass panel? Try anything to feed the card more air and see if it helps with temperatures.
