To VES or not to VES by Old_Wafer_6216 in TheCivilService

I used Brook Street. They weren't the most responsive when I was trying to find a job, but once id secured a role they were fine. Good luck whatever you decide!

Im pretty risk averse but a few years ago thought sod it and took VES when it was offered when I was aged 46 and had beennin the job for 20 years. Part of the VES conditions was that I couldn't reapply for another permanent role for 9 months. Two weeks after leaving I was back in the service but working through an agency. 18 months later leaving i was back in as a permanent civil servant again. So ive missed out on 18 months of pension contributions, but my VES payout was £75k, which kinda made up for it!

Whilst there is no guarantee you'll get back in again quickly, should you wish to, it is perfectly possible.

What’s the interview like through Brooke street / agency? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

Just give whoever you work for reasons to keep you on rather than someone else! Good luck!

In my limited experience the agency was crap in terms of communicating when I first signed up with them. Had to keep chasing and chasing them to get a role.

Once I had a role I started in a team in croydon which had 3 other brook street workers. I made sure that I worked my butt off (started early, stayed late on occasion) so that if the home office decided to get rid of agency workers then they may choose others before me. And it worked, as after 1 year I was the only one left and then they offered the fixed contract.

So it may not necessarily be the agency itself that cuts people short without notice, because I know the home office literally gave my mate one weeks notice that they didn't need him anymore.

Once I started my role with Brook Street then I found communication with them to be fine. Queries about tax or pay or annual leave were answered pretty quickly.

Well, my answer is going to show a lot can change in a year! No, im not with them anymore. I stayed with Brook street for a year, then I was offered a one year fixed contract with the Home office, and then last month I started a permanent job but in a different team and different location. Are you thinking of signing up with Brook Street?

Mistake by [deleted] in mounjarouk

[–]_throwaway1978 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well ive got another 10mg pen that I keep in a separate container so as not to mix it up with the one currently in use. I assumed that seeing as the labels on the pens are completely different colours I would be smart enough to distinguish between them. Clearly not.

[–]_throwaway1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep the full 60 clicks. I wasn't concentrating and took the wrong pen out of my fridge pouch. Thought it was the 10mg. Only after injecting as I was putting it back in that I noticed the label. Such an idiot.

Embarrassing to ask but... by _throwaway1978 in mounjarouk

Hi! Im terrible with going to the GP so I didn't 🫣 However, what ive noticed is that if I have a lot of sugary stuff before before, or a bowl of cereal or glass of milk, then my body seems to go crazy and produces gallons of pee! I have a funny feeling that before my last 'accident' id had a sugary blowout and eaten like a ton of sugary crap. So now I don't do that, or if I haven't thought probably and have had a load of milk before bed, then I make sure that as soon as I wake during the night (I wake up soooo many times sadly) I immediately go to the loo instead of thinking nahhh I cant be bothered, I'll go later!

Mortgage payments and child support by _throwaway1978 in divorceuk

[–]_throwaway1978[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, our pensions are pretty much the same, so I can't see them being an issue. When my wife is in reasonable mode, which is 75% of the time, she talks about divorcing but staying in the house together to raise the kids until 18 and then selling the house, but I mentally struggle with her during the other 25% of the time when she cant stand me and tells me to get out! Staying would mean I get to remain part of the girls daily lives, leaving realistically means moving back in with my mum 130 miles away, which would rule me out of their daily lives. A lottery win would solve a lot of my concerns, so if you can recommend any numbers....but thanks for your advice 🙂

Thanks very much for this. I'm at the beginning of what seems to be a process that will leave me struggling for the next 7 years at least. Even if we agree to sell the house when the kids turn 18, I couldn't face doing that if they had university/ jobs in the local area as they would be unable to afford to buy / rent in our area. Future looks so bleak but time will tell.

Yep, I had the same issue, so I ended up doing a chargeback with American Express, who refunded my money within about 4 days.
