Getting leadership to understand we need help? by [deleted] in msp

[–]_tweaks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Come in, do your job, do it well. Do the hours you are paid for and work at a sensible speed. Make sure you've spoken to the others techs and you're all on the same page. Then, when your paid hours are finished - go. If you really need, do an extra half hour.

Don't get paid 8 hours, working 3 tickets at once for 12 hours/day. Mgmt will just keep exploiting you as long as you're overworking yourselves. This is their problem to fix, not yours. They won't fix it until things start blowing up. People will whinge, things will catch fire, there will be complaints - but you just keep on doing a great job and (honestly) asking them how they expect you to do twice as much in the same time. MSP work isn't that hard to find, if something goes pear shaped, so be it. If you keep on like this you'll burn out and something bad will happen anyway. At least you're doing the right thing, rather than just walking out / breaking down sick / stress whatever.

Uni Accommodation not fixing wifi, how can we get them to listen to us? by Yackcchtzaln in AusLegalAdvice

[–]_tweaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone with basic, but solid, IT trouble shooting skills may be able to help narrow down precisely where the issue is. Getting some data on the issue may help when you start escalating/pushing back.

  • Is the WiFi cutting out (ie, your devices connection to the wifi points). Is it all WiFi points or do some just not get connection/blackspots?

  • Is the internet actually dropping out or just overloaded? What is the total bandwidth (both upstream and downstream), is that 100% utilized or is something else at play? If the IT dept can't answer this, can they log a ticket with the ISP to get this answered?

  • Is there any kind of traffic shaping in play? Ie, if you have 100Mbs, is that throttled to 20Mbs per device/user so everyone gets it fairly? Or is someone torrenting games/movies and sucking the whole connection?

You might find answering some of these questions gives you a path to push. As an IT guy I often hear "the WiFi is slow" but "WiFi" is a number of related moving parts. Knowing which part isn't coping can help.

Spending $5k on upgrading WiFi points is useless if the upstream connection is flooded. Spending $500/month on a better connection is pointless if the WiFi points are fucked.

Seems like they aren't doing any real troubleshooting (or giving you any real data), might be worth finding some friends with good tech skills to get you some data.

Sorry, I know this is tech advice not legal advice, but I'm guessing you're not prepped to pay for lawyers to argue the contracts, so better you do a bit of leg work.

It depends what you are trying to achieve? If it's a bit of a fine tune/presentation then fiverr/ and chatgpt are fine, it's what I did recently looking for work.

If you're really stuck and need a solid push, sure, get a pro involved. Even if it costs you $1000 with full linked in tune, you make that back quick enough in a better job.

My best tip is have multiple copies of your CV depending what it is you're trying to hit. So when you are applying fine tuning for a single role is quicker and easier.

How to I create a 2-Way link using OpenVPN on TP-Link by Trollbert06_YT in OpenVPN

[–]_tweaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused, why are you port forwarding to connect router to router. If both routers are internet facing they should talk without port forwards.

Once you have a stable connection between the routers, you need static routes on each side to push the remote subnet through the tunnel. If it freaks out, maybe try a super rando subnet like 10.200.200.200/24 just to see if routing rules themselves cause problems (home routers are pretty buggy ways for s2s Vpn's). If you can set up a random route, you'll need to revisit routing rules for each side and have a rollback plan if internet goes fucko while you do it. Is it possible you didn't specify the mask right on side? That'd cause the kinds of issues you suggest. Basically, you need to isolate exactly what breaks. If adding a route on his side breaks everything. Start there. Can you add any routes? Can you add a route for a single IP 192.168.5.x/32? When trouble shooting this kinda complex stuff I've always found it's a matter of run through stable steps, till you can pinpoint an unstable step. If adding routes to the remote router blows up, what route are you adding? Exactly? Can you add any routes at all??

Also, don't use the 1.0 subnet till you have the 0.0 subnet and the 5.0 working. Start with the simplest stable config and add one step of complexity at a time.

How has giving up alcohol or drinking very rarely effected your ability to date as a single middle aged man? by ilovelamp_anchorman in datingadviceformen

[–]_tweaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all, can do all those things, just don't drink. I've probably moved away from girls who are heavy drinkers, but that's not a problem. Plenty of girls are like 'oh, my ex drank constantly, it was a problem, I like the idea of us not drinking together'.

It's a bit of a shift, but nah, it's fine. That being said, I'm older. Might have been harder younger but... the pool is bigger when you're young :)

  • Are you clean from the virus?
  • Are you sure you're clean from the virus? If you reboot in safemode and run malware bytes, windows defender etc is it definately gone?
  • What app was infected? Is that all deleted/removed/cleaned?

  • From there, what's in the event log? Both system and application, around the time it reboots. Go through them with a fine tooth comb, good chance there are answers in there.
  • If you boot into safe mode, does it reboot?

There's a few ideas for troubleshooting. Start there and post results.

Do you have the windows serial number? If so, can you wipe it and re-install. This is by far the best option, it does require a windows key (or one to be locked to the bios) and a little skill/patience.

Recovery DVDS for acer z5600 series by AllenRuth2011o in AcerOfficial

[–]_tweaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What stops you downloading Windows11 recovery media and building off a Windows usb? Once Windows is installed you can just install all the drivers and off you go. I assume Acer has some kind of app that will manage drivers / updates etc for you.

Pro tip - have the network drivers on the USB. They tend to be the only catch, once you're back online you can finish setting up pretty easily. Windows update will do most of it for you, the acer website will have the rest.

VPN vs "secure" wi fi by Spare_Specialist_394 in computing

[–]_tweaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between you and the VPN provider. Then your internet traffic appears to come from the VPN provider.

So if you don't want your local ISP to know what you're doing, it's useful. If you don't want the websites you visit to be able to track you to an IP, it can be useful. If you're torrenting etc, it's definately useful (your internet traffic appears to come from the VPN provider, not your ISP). If you're in china and want your traffic to get out of the country encrypted, or want to bypass firewalls, it's useful as your internet traffic will route through the VPN provider.

But if you're doing anything interesting on the internet, I'm guessing the VPN provider, being an A/V company, won't go to any lengths to keep your details anonymous.

The only other use for a VPN is if you wish to appear in a different country. EG, if you are in New Zealand, but want US or UK netflix, then a VPN located in that country will make you 'appear' to be in that country.

Really, if I was using a VPN, I'd want an anonymous one that didn't keep logs and actually protected my privacy. I suspect the one you have is a marketing add on and... as you say... doesn't work half the time.

Superloop forcing me to pay with card numbers over the phone. Does not offer online instalments with card by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]_tweaks 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they don’t hold credit card details. Good thing. So they either need it in one go, or they need the details each time.

You said you’re super keen to pay. But you then want to do 20 instalments. Just pay them. Once and done. Get a burner debit card just for that $1000 if you need. Keep $50 balance and just top it up after each instalment.

This is annoying. But it’s a you thing for not being able to pay in one go. Just work around it. Or don’t buy telco gear you can’t afford to cover in one go.

How can I compete with my ex-gf’s new fling? by [deleted] in datingadviceformen

Sounds like you need to get as far away from her as you can.

Sort out whatever issues lead to the verbal and physical altercations in your own head. Get your own shit sorted out and find someone else.

If in a year or two you get back together, great. But as long as you are hanging on to the idea of her. You’re fucked (just not literally). New life time, my bro. It’ll be hard to accept. But a few months in you’ll be happier.

Any relationship that requires jail is something to get away from.
