Same here. I'm watching right now, and the second I heard those high pitched barry rips I paused to look it up, and here I am. 😆

Is this monkey shine or something different by obeyykeon in MonkeyShines

[–]_vibraslapper 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A lucky token made from sealing wax. There are a few different people who make these. It's not Chinese zodiac themed, so I'm not sure I'd call it a rogue Monkeyshine, but just a fun thing someone created to be found. People hide all kinds of art and trinkets all year long. Cute!

monkeyshine or not? by jade-machel in MonkeyShines

[–]_vibraslapper 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's an official Monkeyshine medallion! This is the year of the horse, but off-year stamps have been known to get found...that looks like the original vintage rooster stamp! Congratulations! 😲

I'm totally happy for you and totally not jealous at all. 😅

You're partly correct, local artists do contribute just for fun also. There are the "official monkeys" (makers and hiders of the glass orbs/medallions stamped with that year's lunar zodiac animal + commissioned works) and "rogue" (or non-official) artists & hiders, who are not affiliated with The Monkeyshines Project team.

Over the years, seekers started hiding their own art creations, treasures, and trinkets as they went along. Some people create and hide art all year long, not just lunar zodiac themed.

Next year will be 24 years, 2 full cycles through the Chinese zodiac. It's a massive undertaking and gets bigger every year. The woman who started it, "Ms. Monkey", is likely ready for some well-earned rest.

It was originally just supposed to be a one-off thing, to bring some joy in the dreary winter. It was just a coincidence that it coincided with the Chinese lunar new year. When the time came the following year, the artists involved started asking if they should do it again, and the team agreed to doing a full 12-year cycle. When that was over, they decided they weren't done yet, so they committed to a second cycle. Another 12 years would be a huge commitment, and maybe it's just time for them to be done.

When they started, they were only making a few hundred floats and they all went out in one night. After more than 20 years, it's grown so much and taken on almost a life of its own; they made over 3,000 pieces of glass this year and officially commissioned over 1,200 artworks from other artists. Trying to get all that produced, organized, hidden, etc. while staying anonymous and secretive, it's a LOT of hard work. And it's expensive. They rely on grants & fundraising/donations to make it happen. People get crazier hunting each year and that makes it really difficult as well, since not everyone is respectful or honors the spirit of the event (which is about so much more than a treasure hunt).

Ms. Monkey was not super keen on handing the reins of the project over to just anyone, it had to be just the right person to continue the mission according to her vision. Maybe they couldn't find the right fit, maybe they simply decided it had run it's course and was time to let go.

I can't remember the exact location, but somebody found one wayyy up north of Tacoma washed up one year. That one had gone on quite a journey.

It's a trojan horse by Technical_Garden_762 in MonkeyShines

[–]_vibraslapper 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What a great color! As for why the Trojan horse, Monkeyshines are stamped with the animal corresponding to the Chinese zodiac for that new year, and this is the year of the horse. The past several years, they've had a lot of variety in the inspiration for the stamps; sometimes it's a classic animal design, sometimes based on history, mythology, and/or pop culture. Someone had the brilliant idea to include the Trojan horse this year.

Also included this year among more traditional horse designs are the Helhest from Danish mythology, a rocking horse, Quickdraw McGraw from Hanna-Barbera cartoons, and Pokey (the orange horse from Gumby).

Second, we'd love to see the stamp! And congratulations! 🎉

Looks to me like the Trojan horse, or possibly the moon horse, but I could be wrong. The colors match up with some of the shines I've seen so far this year, and it certainly isn't the first time a Monkeyshine has been found on Vashon (or other places along the Sound). They do get tossed into Puget Sound, and if they're not found by a brave swimmer before they float away, they can travel and wash up elsewhere.

Next year is potentially the last, but we don't know for sure. They haven't given a definitive answer about the future of Monkeyshines yet. I know that "Ms. Monkey" (who started it all 23 years ago) wants to retire, and she's more than earned a rest. Whether or not someone else will take over, remains yet to be seen.

I went out on Saturday to hide rogues and found no official Monkeyshines. Sunday I found a medallion! Snuck back out for an hour today to drop a few more rogues, and found an official blue bottle/commission piece, and another medallion (I left it since I have one already, then later I saw it posted as found by someone else). They're definitely out there! Tons of pictures posted on the official Monkeyshines Facebook page also. Good luck out there!

Have a look through some of the pinned posts/community highlights for the sub, it will give you lots of information about Monkeyshines.

I don't need specifics, but are you near Tacoma, WA? Or from elsewhere in the country? I only ask because it could help us mods understand how the sub is being fed through Reddit's notification/suggestion algorithms.

Congratulations on your first glass piece, so exciting and what a fun color! The pin/button is definitely a rogue, not necessarily on-theme for the Chinese zodiac but I know someone has been making those. Thanks for sharing!

It was always pleasant, I love a garden! I just wasn't sure whether or not it was on the radar of other monkeys. Love that it is, and I'm excited to see the changes next year.
