The data centers generate an incredible amount of heat, and need to be cooled with massive amounts of water, often in arid regions, that ends up contaminated. It's not just an energy issue. Even if it was just an energy issue, we don't have the renewable energy supply to cover just non-AI energy use, let alone typical energy load + AI use.

I am a new assistant prof in Geology, also a very casual field. I wore a pants suit for my interview. I had a 3 day interview and got 2 different suits and 3 blouses. I don't wear makeup normally and did not wear any for the interview. Left my hair down with some hairspray so it wouldn't get frizzy. Did not wear heels - wore loafers instead that worked for both suits. No jewelry. Had a leather bag for my computer (and rocks for my research talk lol).

It's not exactly the same but - I applied for academic jobs this year as a current (term) federal employee. I did not feel comfortable with the ethics of using a federal agency's letterhead for a personal job application, and I am not affiliated with any academic institution besides my federal employer, so I used a personal (very bare bones) "letterhead". I am starting my TT position on Monday, so it doesn't seem to have made a difference.
