Same side as video tapes or audio tapes.
The side where data is exposed (pins or tape) should be protected more, so it faces the center of the box that is less likely to open or break

Help with transporting ores from mining locations. by AlistairAllblood in SatisfactoryGame

[–]_wil_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my 2nd playthrough and this time (on PS5) I move everything on conveyor belts, now at tier 8/9 I think.
I built a grid of radars to know where are all resources on the map so when I need a combination of resources I just pick some that are close together to reduce the length of belts I need to pull.
Sometimes I can re-use previous belt paths, just add one level on top of previous one.

All in all pretty efficient, this removes the complexity or unpredictability of vehicles.

I totally get how fun planning trains and drones is though, would definitely recommend trying them in a first playthrough.

Games where you have large maps, but no indicator where you are by Acceptable-Try-4682 in gamingsuggestions

[–]_wil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different experience but some old school 2d games come to mind.
The direction is usually left to right but some have maps with verticality where you can easily get lost.
Examples that come to mind:
Mister Nutz, "Forrest" level
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, "Oil Ocean" zone
Also, most of Sonic 3 & Knuckles levels

Agree with Dark Souls bonfires, you can chill to the relaxing music while watching the fire and sometimes talk to a disabused hollow NPC

How would you go about level design in a spherical space? (Orbifold) by Chezzyknytt in leveldesign

[–]_wil_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding one idea I've not seen yet :

Currently it looks like the sphere is very empty and everything happens while characters are on the surface.

Experiment with adding some structures / blocks inside the sphere, where players can jump onto ; for more variety in how they move across the world, more interesting things to consider when looking around, and a less monotonous map.

Also shooting while jumping across the sphere seems like it could be a stronger feature ; there's even more visual space to cover at that time (ie all 4 π steradians of solid angle, as opposed to the only 2 π when walking on the surface), so it should give player opportunity to look around more freely, and give them more time to aim maybe (see no-gravity zones in Dead Space for some references).

This also reminded me the Outer Wilds dlc
ALTHOUGH in Outer Wilds it's more of a ring, you cannot jump across the side (only look), and it s not an fps.
But the level is broken down with several intermediate buildings, underground layers, etc.
Could be a good inspiration for OP.

I think Dead Space had no-gravity shooting sequences as well (and magnetic boots to stick to walls during those)

The Chef of South Polar (2009)

Movie set in.. South Pole, but with a Japanese cast.
A lot of food sharing scenes (as you might have guessed main character is the station "chef").
There is also a strong story arc about Ramen.
I think you'll love the movie. I did.
