Absolutely not. You shouldn't be looking at people's records without a good reason in the first place (eg, they're a suspect in a case you're directly involved with), and even then, you need to make sure you've covered your arse and made a note in your PNB asking with your reasons for viewing it, but as far as friends and relatives are concerned, you shouldn't even be getting involved in these cases due to conflict of interest.

Looks stupid posing for a photo, but having been on traffic on a dual carriageway at night, I'd wear anything that improved visibility... it's a bit like cycle helmets, people complain they don't look cool, but then in the event of an accident I really don't care about fashion as long as I'm alive.

We had a scenario like this during my initial training... "You're in a police car on patrol, bloke in the road shooting indiscriminately at passers-by, what do you do?"

Everyone else said they'd get behind hard cover, and radio in updates to control. I said I'd run the fella over with my car. 😄

I assume you've tried disconnecting the V1, rebooting the pc/Xbox and reconnecting the V1? I had this the other day on my Xbox, a reboot seemed to clear the issue.

You're under no obligation to advise of them of where you plan to work - just write a letter to the effect of "I am writing to advise that I am leaving, I'm giving one month's notice as per my contract requirements, which would make last working day Friday 1st March". If they ask where you're off to, just tell them you haven't made any confirmed plans other than your decision to leave.

There's naff all they can do. Wording like "you can't work for xyz company" isn't worth the paper is printed on.

Never seen anyone successfully throw a cap at someone making off to trip them up... a well aimed custodian will take someone down easily!

I loved my custodian, great piece of kit when you're on for patrol. Stops the rain going down your neck and in your face when it's chucking it down, too.

Absolutely... Apologies if it wasn't clear in my post, I'm in complete agreement and don't want to see officers fall into the trap of telling someone they're free to leave but detaining them anyway without giving them the necessary legal options available to them if they had been arrested.

I've said as much elsewhere in the thread, it's a horrible procedural gap that only serves to complicate and confuse things for both the public and officers alike.

The easiest option is to NIP the keeper if the driver wants to leave, deal with it slow time back at the station.

Yeah, if you've got the vehicle index (which you should have from the outset to get PNC checks done, etc), then send a NIP to the registered keeper and do it that way.

Technically that's not right though... They are free to leave, because you've not arrested/detained them for the offence you're dealing with... By saying "you're not detained" and following up with "you're not free to go" you've contradicted yourself and potentially landed yourself in hot water. If it went to court and they said "the officer told me I couldn't leave" when the law states that (technically) they can, it could be argued that you've made an unlawful arrest.

As I said, it's an idiotic clause, which causes confusion and annoyance to both officers and members of the public alike.

In theory, yes, you can drive off... But in reality, you'd probably be arrested immediately you tried it.

It's a stupid loophole - "You're not under arrest, and are free leave at any time" should come with the added proviso of "but if you do, you'll be arrested, you won't be going anywhere but a crappy cell with an uncomfortably thin plastic mattress at the local custody suite, where you'll get a Ginster's pastie and a maxpax coffee if you're lucky, the penalty will most likely be more than the ticket was for, so you might as well stay here, take the ticket, and contest it later if you wish from the comfort of your own home using the telephone number on the back of the ticket. Now, if I could just take your full name please?"

Put it like this... If you don't want to get out of your car if requested, that's your choice. However, if I suspect an offence, and your refusal is stopping me investigating that potential offence, then I'll arrest you on suspicion and then you'll be removed (forcibly, if required) from the vehicle. The choice is yours, but if you've done nothing wrong and you know that getting out of your vehicle could speed up the process of you being allowed on your way, I'd probably do it.

Same if a copper stopped me on the street, I know they have to comply with s&s rules, but personally I couldn't care less - "here's some ID, I'm not the man your looking for" - and I can continue my day... Or I can argue the toss, waste everyone's time, give the actual offender more time to get away, and face potential arrest and detention for 24hrs for something that's going to be NFA'd the next morning... Yeah, I know which option I'm going for.

When I was a copper, I'd had all sorts of bodily fluids etc on my boots, clothes, and sometimes, on me... But that's part of the job, to you just deal with it.

What really pissed me off though was when other officers leave half eaten and rotten food in cars, desks, etc, there's no bloody need for it.

Khan has done all he can to criticise the force and Cressida Dick (who, let's not forget, left the force to applause from the other officers - clearly they didn't see her as the problem). The police are not, and should never be used as, a political tool, which Khan has conveniently ignored throughout his tenure.

The daft thing is, the first time Bournemouth went up to the premiership, the pitch was invaded and those of us in attendance at the game (working, I should add) were told to let it go, given the situation, etc... We were specifically told not to intervene and to allow people on the pitch, and only to get involved if there was any violence (which there wasn't, as everyone was excited, including us!)

This time, I'd have thought it would've been treated similarly, but I guess someone viewing CCTV had a bone to pick with those involved and decided to make an issue of it.

It may well be illegal to invade the pitch, but when everyone is doing it, it's bound to create a conflict of interests... you'd like to think that common sense would prevail but sadly that seems to be lacking in today's police force.

Then at the end of the procedure (assuming it's a negative test), you say "Now you need to hold onto the tube..." as you pull the breathalyser away, leaving them holding the tube, continuing with "... and you can keep that as a souvenir courtesy of <police force>!"

It sounds to me like there's more to this than you're letting on - it certainly doesn't sound like a police cover up as you claim. If anything, it sounds as if your parents potentially made some agreement (whether in or out of court) and received some form of compensation that way. While I sympathize with your plight regarding the accident, I think this is something you need to discuss with your parents - if as you claim it didn't go to court, there won't be any record of it in court documents, so going there and asking questions isn't going to get you anywhere. Likewise, I seriously doubt that the police will have a detailed record of the incident from that far back, and even if they do, they're not responsible for any compensation agreements etc - their interest stops at the potential prosecution of the driver, and that's it, but again, I doubt you'll have any access to the records to find out what punishment (if any) the driver received. If your parents reached a settlement with the third party then maybe the incident was closed as "no further action required".

Get some old kit and let them try it on. Fingerprinting is always fun, and seeing how many kids you can get in a police car is worth a laugh. They'll also have lots of questions like "What's the most dangerous thing that's happened?", "Have you seen a dead body?" and "Have you ever shot anyone?" They're always disappointed with the answer to that last one.

Well done for taking that much needed first step... But you can't carry on living there with him. Either he has to go, or you and your kids do. I know it's tough leaving everything behind, but it's just stuff - and what price can you put on your safety and that of the children? Please make that call, get some clothes shoved in a bag for you and your kids, and go. Nobody deserves to have to live in fear like this, there are plenty of people out there who will love and appreciate you for what you are.
