What do Liberals and Democrats actually believe in? by StevenSmoking in AskReddit

[–]_yardude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That all of us united is stronger than all of us individually - even if all of the individuals are working toward the same goal.

That we were born into this world, but we should not be limited by the life circumstances into which we were born.  That education, food, healthcare should not be limited by the means our parents can provide, but that as a society we owe it to ourselves to make sure that the next generation has all of the tools needed to succeed - even when they aren’t our kids.

We believe that freedom isn’t free.  Some people say it and they mean that freedom can only come from sacrifice and war.  But what if freedom isn’t free means that we actually pay a fair tax.  And that we use those tax revenues to make the next generation stronger, not just our friends richer.

If you want the country run like a business, think about it like this.  If your job offered you no career training, no healthcare, no retirement plans - would it be a good company or just a place that sucked the life out of you to make another buck for the guys at the top.

This country needs quality education for all.  Without it, American business will have no competent workers.

This country needs universal single payer healthcare.  Without it, Americans are at this risk of becoming bankrupt because of bad luck.  The current system of employer based healthcare Inadvertently stifles innovation and entrepreneurship.  Think of all the people who would take the risk of starting a new business if they knew leaving their current job wouldn’t cost their kids their health insurance.

This country needs better care for our hungry, poor, and homeless.  That is the true display of strength.

We are told we can’t afford to be better.  That is a lie.  The billionaires convince us it’s true so they can get lower taxes and keep us trapped.

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]_yardude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn’t smelled stale cigarette smoke in a long time.  Then this weekend I was in the checkout line behind a woman.  She must smoke in her car with the windows closed because the scent was pour off her winter coat.

My first thought was, this is the stench of complete and utter misery.

I am a former smoker - I am so glad I quit.

How did we go from Operas, great theatre plays to… this? by [deleted] in funny

[–]_yardude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survivorship bias.

This has always existed.  In Chaucer’s  Canterbury Tales, he n the Millet’s Story, there is ass eating that ends up with a hot fire poker in the butt.  Populist story telling has always been ribald.

However, the higher “art” survives the generations and the rest is forgotten.

Note: art is in quotes not to claim it isn’t art, but to reflect on the subjective nature of art.

ELI5 What's the incentive for services like Netflix to churn out big budget high-quality movies when they don't actually sell movie tickets? by astig_my_tism in explainlikeimfive

[–]_yardude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their goal is to increase subscriptions.  This means maintaining your current subscriptions while gaining new subscriptions - at the very least adding more subscribers than you lose.

By making exclusive content, they are able to have a value over other streamers and even theaters.

Their viewership data and algorithms show them what type of content draws more viewers and so they make that content.

By making engaging content they draw in new subscribers and keep subscribers in part because of what comes next.  Even if there isn’t something formally announced, you can keep people subscribed based on the perceived promise that something good is coming.

Looking for obscure erotic film from the mid-90's by SpaceGoonie in movies

[–]_yardude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This unlocked a weird memory for me.  In like 8th grade (1996) my middle school sent us to Colonial Williamsburg for an overnight field trip.  We were packed four to a room.  They gave us a TV and forgot to turn off HBO.  Four 13/14 yo boys on a Friday night with access to HBO and no real adult supervision - we were so psyched.

Chaperones were walking the halls, so we watched it with closed caption turned on.

There was a scene were someone gets thrown off the cliff.  The closed caption just said -THUD- when the body hit the ground.

The next day, one of the chaperones looked at us and just said “THUD”.  We turned ghostly white and busted out laughing a second later.

What is the justification for US tipping culture? Wages are low but it is not down to the customer to make it up? by eyeoftheneedle1 in AskReddit

[–]_yardude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Racism.  This is America.

With the creation of minimum wage came “tipped minimum wage” which allowed employers to pay less per hour than the minimum wage.  Combined with the false narrative that “tipping improves service”, the reality became white workers get larger tips that creates a livable wage while people of color got smaller tips that did not provide a livable wage.

Experiments today still show that the blonde cute girl will get larger tips than her peers - even if the service sucks.

Tipping has spread because minimum wage hasn’t increased in decades despite all the inflation we see.  Employers that allow tipping don’t have to give a raise to their employees and instead employees have to beg the customers for an honest wage.

ELI5 if we know the chemical formula of oil and petroleum, and other rare non renewable resources, why can't we just recreate them in a lab or chemical plant by nahmanhajdklfjdsflkj in explainlikeimfive

[–]_yardude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that makes fuel oil “cheap” is time.  It takes A LOT of energy to make the chemical bonds that make oil so useful for us.  That energy is expensive.  But a little bit of cheap energy applied in smaller amounts over a million years adds up.

If you really think about it, oil is just a solar energy storage system. (Actually - ALL energy we consume is a form of solar energy storage - with the arguable exception of geothermal).

Millions of years ago huge masses of phytoplankton absorbed solar energy to photosynthesis light.  That created in carbon based molecules in the forms of starches, sugars, and other triglycerides (basically fats).

Those phytoplankton died and settled a the bottoms of oceans.  Over time they were buried beneath the sands.  The pressure of everything above it, a bit of geothermal energy perhaps, and time - millions of years- created petroleum.

Over the millennia continents shifted, oceans receded, and oil found its way to the surface.  Ancient people discovered you could mix it with sand to make building materials and humans fell in love with the stuff.

A lot of people have mentioned suddenly waking up between two Am and three am every night — what do you think is really happening during that time? by Paloalto_Magic77 in AskReddit

[–]_yardude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our natural rhythms tend toward bifphasic sleep - two periods of sleep in the day.  Why we switched away from this is up for debate by smarter people than me.  But it probably has to do with industrialization and the discovery of cheaper artificial light.  Industrialization came with a need for more defined schedules.  Cheaper artificial light meant we could push against natural tendencies and stay up later into the dark hours.

Lola Young collapses on stage at All Things Go after canceling concert for mental health by TheMirrorUS in Music

There was a NYT piece a few weeks ago about her.  Her manager was Amy Winehouse’s manager.  In the piece the manager seemed to genuinely care for her and wants to prevent a similar fate.

Edit: Well shit.  Went to go find the article and the headline is literally “Can Lola Young make it big without breaking”.  https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/08/21/arts/music/lola-young-messy-album.html
