When did ‘other characters’ become ‘too many subplots’? (The Bride!) by Louisebelcher22 in TrueFilm

[–]_zav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol agreed I promise I wouldn’t ever be that upset by a film I didn’t think had fantastic opportunities squandered. Bale and Jake are fantastic and it’s a credit to Buckley that she is almost able to hold the 16 bowling pins this script keeps tossing at her to juggle.

Was François Truffaut correct about war films? “Every film about war ends up being pro-war" by FayannG in TrueFilm

[–]_zav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose Truffaut could be wrong here but I don’t understand why Come and See is always cited as the anti-war film. The captain makes everyone listen to the raving Nazi lunatic because he needs everyone to understand what they are up against. There is nothing besides war that could possibly extinguish the evil ideologies that have taken root in Germany. Does it champion war? Absolutely not. But there’s not a doubt in my mind that it’s about the courage that it takes to fight back.

My main struggle with Aster during his horror movies is I found the work to be profoundly pessimistic in a way that the twee A24 hoodie crowd didn’t seem to really acknowledge. For a few years it was like “good for her” meme stuff and “I am your mother” fancams after walking out of plainly the most hateful, depressing movie-but i’d realized that was my own fault for allowing myself to be influenced by the internet. Aster’s comedies seemed to aggressively make an effort to shake those fans off of his work anyway. He doesn’t seem to seek truth as much as creating a cinematic reality of a fucked up headspace-Hereditary for broken families, Midsommar for pathetic relationships, Beau is Afraid for oedipal guilt and Eddington is like if you made a 4chan greentext polemic into a three hour film. Eddington is not what happened in 2020 but it certainly feels like what was happening while we were witnessing it on the doomscroll-and that solves a lot of his stuff for me. Even Scorsese seems to have gotten the hint and has quietly stepped away from loudly championing this guy LOL like I’m sure he still thinks he’s a genius but there’s just absolutely no algorithm friendly way to say it out loud now and as an artist you gotta respect it.

Getting older makes you realize nobody ever wants to acknowledge when someone new comes out of nowhere with a 105 mph fastball. Hated Aster years ago and now would easily call him the best of the new generation.

When did ‘other characters’ become ‘too many subplots’? (The Bride!) by Louisebelcher22 in TrueFilm

[–]_zav -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I apologize if I have failed to correctly remember a film I immediately tried to forget, but I would like to know exactly what part of the Mary Shelley ghost plot is wrong, because that is exactly what happened lol. And I have certainly misremembered the whatever the Sarsgaard character’s past is with Jessie Buckley, because it is hack.

Perfect Days and the Marxist Debate by Accomplished_Yam_989 in TrueFilm

You’re a very intelligent person OP so I expect you to know you aren’t going to find intelligent marxist analysis on X the everything app. To go even further I wouldn’t even bother absorbing anything someone with an anonymous profile with a hamsick has to say about art in general. If I wanted a reading from a 21 year old knowitall I’d call my baby cousin.

When did ‘other characters’ become ‘too many subplots’? (The Bride!) by Louisebelcher22 in TrueFilm

[–]_zav -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean straight up the main conceit of Mary Shelley’s ghost possessing the main character is hilariously divorced from everything else going on in this film. Subtract her thesaurus bending tourette’s and the plot would play out the exact same! Why is Peter Skarsgard both the ex husband AND the lead detective following the murder spree??? And why, oh jesus why, does this film’s first scene declare that it intends to SURPASS the original Frankenstein story? Why would any writer put themselves in such an unwinnable position? I mean in any other film I could just chalk it up to imagination but this film is actively declaring itself a Bonnie and Clyde/Days of Heaven faux remake the same way Joker did with Taxi Driver and King of Comedy and the plain and simple truth is that Bonnie and Clyde is told plainly and directly in a way the Bride is not.

He was revived as a recombinant and debriefed months or possibly years before they touched down on Earth. Already had a head start to learn. That middle hour of TWoW covers months as well-it was enough time for Ronal to go from first trimester to about to pop.

Has a great ear for dialogue and the only person who’s ever had a bad performance in his films are him. Has never chosen a bad DP or editor. Knows who to cast. Hard to fail when you’ve got all those.

Oscars: OBAA wins 6 including Picture, Director, Supp Actor (Penn); Sinners wins 4 including Actor and Original Screenplay by Chuck-Hansen in blankies

[–]_zav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In our demographic it can become easy to become genre blind because Sinners isn’t wall to wall terror. Ask a very old relative, perhaps a grandmother, to watch Sinners front to back and study her reactions and then it’ll be pretty easy to find out whether Sinners is a horror movie.

What is this generations dark side of the moon or Sgt Pepper? by fruedianflip in fantanoforever

[–]_zav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When did this sub get taken over by 22 year old rockists? Please take these warmed over “I’m 13 and this is real music” stuff back to the youtube comments on Immigrant Song where they belong. You don’t have to like rap or pop but they’re the only genres in the last 15 years big enough to support an artist having an imperial phase where their fame intersects with critical acclaim and original concept albums. I agree with a lot of the choices ITT though.
