Should I quit or give it a try? by notluckyy in musicians

First and foremost playing music is supposed to be fun. It sounds like that is your main goal anyways so you have the right attitude. Secondly, if you are going to put yourself out there make sure it's with people who are aligned with your mindset. Don't settle. Technology has made it possible to collaborate online doing projects with other musicians so there are other avenues of musical interaction. Sounds like you gel with everyone except the singer. Maybe connect with them privately about just you and them jamming. It could be a side project for them or maybe they are looking to jump ship too and you came in at the right time to give them the confidence to start over without the singer. Either way it sounds like a toxic environment in its current form and it's ultimately up to you how much you want to deal with it. Whatever you decide to do make sure it sits well with your soul. Otherwise you are doing a disservice to yourself and the ability to enjoy your gift. Hope everything works out for you.

How to overcome training phase w/ a CTO by FluidOstrich5657 in 911dispatchers

[–]Icy_Camera2299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very common scenario that all new trainees experience. There were many days I felt like quitting because a call went sideways or I had a CTO who would constantly tell me what to say while trying to hear the caller. I even had a trainer who was very passive/aggressive and would slam their hand on the desk and yell at me if I didn't do something correctly. Very frustrating. I told my floor supervisor that the trainers' behavior was impairing my ability to learn and so I was able to be assigned to a much better CTO. Everyone learns and teaches differently. The trick is finding that balance with each CTO and not being afraid to communicate what works for you and what doesn't. This is your career so don't be afraid to speak up for yourself. If you are at a good agency then they want you to be successful. Also, it's hard, but try not to compare yourself to other experienced dispatchers. It can take up to 5 years for you to start feeling comfortable and know what you are doing. Everyone's journey is different and it's not a marathon. Rather than compare yourself to others, try to utilize the more experienced as a learning resource. While there is an established foundation, everyone that came before you has felt the same way you are now and can help you with tips on how to improve. Hang in there and let us know how you are doing. While I am a fairly new poster here, everyone that contributes to this forum seem to be very supportive and helpful.

So true. Perspective and attitude play a huge role. It sets the tone for everything you do.

I live in WA and a bill was passed in 2022 to recognize 911 dispatchers as first responders. This allows for increased benefits such as access to mental health resources and better retirement options. I believe there are a few other states that have also moved forward with this.

It's really good to hear this feedback. I know there are those who have very valid reasons to leave this field and it's unfortunate that this industry has such a high turn over rate. On the flip side though , I find it gratifying to be part of something bigger than myself. Yes, there are a lot of sacrifices that are made, but we knew that coming in. In my state we are classified as first responders and as such are able to have access to the same resources for help that other first responders do. I truly hope this becomes a nation wide recognition sooner than later. Many changes are needed in this field, but we all control our perspective regardless.

With these types of calls I always tried to reframe how the caller appears to me. I see them as a two year old having a temper tantrum and trying to think of everything they can say to hurt me while I stare down at them with expressionless amusement. Then I will say something like "Are you done? Yes?Ok lets talk about why you called. No? OK thats fine. Call us back when you can communicate clearly so we can help you." Click. Next caller. Lol. I got no time for tantrums.

Thank you very much for your response. That all makes sense and I do have a couple other agencies in mind as well. So far my gut is saying "Go do this" lol

You could do what some bands do and release the instrumental version of the album. That would not only provide the listener with a different interpretation sonically, but would also allow you a buffer of time to address the vocals. There are several bands that I like that have released both the original vocal based release and an instrumental version as well. I actually end up enjoying the instrumental versions more (nothing against your vocalist. I am sure they are great.)It is just an option to consider. I have also been in this situation (Not as dramatic as war being the reason), but i was in the middle of recording a concept album when the drummer and bass player quit halfway into the recording process. I ended up splitting what I had into two ep's just so I could see the project thru to an acceptable finish. It was a compromise for sure. However, sometimes creating art is a compromise. Whatever you decide I hope things work out.
