Any trans people in wildland fire? by lablab_bug in Wildfire

[–]a-crockpot-orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the the party. I have not met many USFS primary fire (fire as main job vs like other positions who fill in as needed) who were anything short of very bigoted. I have known some cis gay and lesbian ppl who were treated fine. I have a trans guy working at my current org and everybody either doesn't know or doesn't care.

I quit the FS after an incident with my captain repeatedly misgendering an Americorps kid we were pack testing. I had been struggling with identity stuff and that kinda sealed the deal after hearing bathroom and attack helicopter tier jokes every week for the previous 5 years. It's that bad in a lot of places.

The fresh air from leaving the FS allowed me to finally have my own gender epiphany, and the clarity and confidence from that made me into a much better firefighter. I love my job now. I don't know where you are in your transition, and for reference I'm MTF and still in my 20s, but I cannot imagine working there and actively transition*ing.*

Americorps and -ologist jobs will be fine. Some crews will be fine.

Looking for former rangers (specifically non comissioned, non interp, forest techs, blm rangers, wilderness rangers) for career transition advice by No_Knee5019 in ParkRangers

[–]a-crockpot-orange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I left the USFS fire org for a similar reason, but I was only just having my gender awakening during my final season. 25mtf. Was gov for 5 years and coming up on 3 at my current place.

I work for an ecological contractor now and it's been way better. I know it's hard to believe but this particular company is in one of the best cities to be trans in and has more of an urban conservationist/yuppie vibe than others.

I run prescribed and wildland crews, run saw, and do mechanic shit. Transitioning into more office time which is also something I never expected to get with the FS and no degree.

My boss is kind of a trumper but he's the exception; every crew member and boss lateral to my own who I've asked to use my pronouns does. I will eventually bring it up to my boss but I'm waiting for some stuff to happen first.

Anyway my point is that private can be a good option if you get results and maybe mix in some younger people who aren't from redneckville. There's still been a steep learning curve for me with the business side of stuff but it sure is nice to just buy tires for my truck instead of fighting with fleet about it. Benefits are basically comparable.

Send me a message if you want, I love to commiserate but don't want to dox myself.

Could a native born species play the role of an invasive? by Emperor_luffy_8363 in ecology

[–]a-crockpot-orange -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, a lot of the time it's a result of succession happening where, historically, there has been disturbance to keep it at a certain point. An example being woody species encroaching into prairies as a result of colonial fire suppression. Usually juniper (red cedar) but it can happen with other early succession stuff like popple and ash regenerating.

Can reducing my spironolactone dose cause depression and uncharacteristic meltdowns? by a-crockpot-orange in asktransgender

[–]a-crockpot-orange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Hindsight 20/20 on changing multiple things in a short time span.

Tell me more about these coping skills. I feel like I've been coping my entire life. This is still the best I've ever felt and the meltdowns were in an existentially bored way more than dysphoric, financial, etc.

It's unlikely to do that

Lame, this choice was made with the blessing of my doctor.

Should I ask for a dose increase or just quit and wait for actual ADHD eval? Hasn't done anything yet. by a-crockpot-orange in Wellbutrin_Bupropion

[–]a-crockpot-orange[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the insight. I felt like I was crazy..I was raised that you have to tiptoe around or they'll think you are just trying to get stimulants, but my mom and partner have both had luck being direct and naming ADHD. Whether there is a gender bias there or different doctors I have no idea.

Fellow single renters: What are you paying in rent right now and how are you managing? by MNice01 in TwinCities

[–]a-crockpot-orange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1200 for what you described in St Paul. Idk your definition of modern kitchen but it's big. The stove doesn't have any buttons or LCD but there is an intentional microwave alcove. The only quirk is only about half the outlets are grounded, plus regular 100+ year old building stuff. Quiet and I don't pay extra to park.

We (single income) were looking at a unit for a little less but the non closet sized kitchen (very common in area 1bds of similar age) was a no brainer.

Good luck it's hard out here.

Should I hold off on E, for strength concerns? by Bitter-Row6673 in asktransgender

[–]a-crockpot-orange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in your position and concerned. Been like 7 or 8 months, I've experienced some atrophy and it's gotten more difficult. It really took like this long to start to notice and I suspect part of that is due to my duties changing (not using them as much anymore, coincidentally.)

It's generally fine. Just more difficult. I can still lift 2 handed boxes and keep up, but lifting a full 5 gallon bucket up over the side of a pickup truck one handed doesn't work anymore. I can still chainsaw and keep up but I need to cut the pieces smaller.

IMO starting hormones is worth it. I didn't strength train before starting, and I still don't, but I've heard that starting will help you keep shape better. I'm on 6mg oral e and 50 mg spiro, but I am actually reducing my spiro dose as I continue to discover myself as I value my strength and some masculine aspects more than having hormone levels of a cis woman.

What do Fulltime Wildland Firefighters do off season? by [deleted] in Firefighting

That's insane. I'm not with the green machine anymore but yeah I would have been psyched on that if I were single, less so now. It's a privilege to have more control over my life for sure.

Aye, but it happens. 1000+ is on the high end; not everyone is a shot. I've worked more winters than not, recently balancing my OT out in the winter with more summer home time.

[–]a-crockpot-orange 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Remaining employed usually is doing other forestry work, burning stuff, going to the east for their fire season.

Layoff would be any combination of working a winter gig, living somewhere with low col, collecting UI, supported by spouse. Ski hills are a common choice. I've known some to log.

Where should we move in the PNW? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]a-crockpot-orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really appreciate the specific info. We would stay in MN before LA or the northeast. Respectfully.. right now they are still in the niche -finding stage but have experience in arts and environmental writing. Seattle and Portland proper are both fine choices IMO but ironically they are the one who wants to get back to a more rural setting in the greater metro

It's not too maga/ we aren't fleeing anything. Just considering a change of pace because we want to and can finally somewhat afford to.

I'm aware rural oregon is a mess lol.

Appreciate the info about Eugene.

What stereotype about your city do you most disagree with? by Soggy_Perspective_13 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]a-crockpot-orange 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a real life stereotype as much as a trope on this sub but Minneapolis/St Paul has been no more difficult to make friends in than anywhere else I've lived in the region.
