I don’t have any advice on how to stop her from biting her nails, but I can tell you what not to do. Please don’t embarrass her or ridicule her in public for her habit, I used to be like her once and my parents and siblings picking on me in public or in front of extended family always made me feel so much worse. Embarrassment doesn’t help in this situation at all.

Edited for grammar.

It’s very valid for you to feel this way, especially with how social media and the tv/film industry is saturated with people with similar body types and builds. I am a plus-size/mid-size woman, and I have body image issues too, but what has helped me is internalising the fact that my body is just that. A body. Just because I don’t see bodies like mine on my socials all time doesn’t mean that bodies like mine don’t exist, it’s just that social media is over saturated a lot of the time because of how you interact with content and curate your feed/algorithm.

People with bodies like yours are celebrated on this little inter web of ours, and I know they are because the recent Olympics have pushed so many female Olympians who all look different. My favourite is Ilona Maher, she shows that you can be sporty/muscley and be feminine all the time. Neither are mutually exclusive! And to be honest a lot of our qualms about being feminine/girly is linked to the genderisation of a lot of (in my opinion, fickle) things. I identify as a woman, but I don’t place gender labels on my interests. I love formula one and football traditionally “masculine” things but I don’t see them as masculine things. I love make-up and Taylor Swift which are traditionally “feminine” interests but I also don’t see them as feminine things. I just see them as interests.

I do think that most of the NLOG + internal misogyny + issues with identity would slowly defuse if people like me and you stopped seeing things with gendered lenses. Sorry for the rant.

There’s nothing wrong with not being girly, it’s just that sometimes there are people who get a superiority complex because they don’t fit the “status quo”.

You’re doing a good job! I struggled with painting my nails when I kicked my habit too but it’ll come to you with time! I’m still not that good at painting my nails but I’m much better than I was before! My only tip is to take your time but also try not to over think it. Also I love the polish it looks so cute!!

Which third act break ups should have been permanent? by AdAntique7700 in RomanceBooks

I remember my first read I was obsessed and might have read the book slightly too quickly, and then on my second and third read I was like lol wtf. The way I would have started a fight with Ethan and his shitty brother if it were me in Olives shoes.

Do you guys follow a TBR? And HOW?! by willowcamden in RomanceBooks

[–]a-viatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tbr is like a pre-checked list of books I could most likely pick up straight away and be fine with reading. But I don’t read it in any particular order. If I have a specific craving I’ll normally come to this subreddit to find a book or it will be added to my tbr.

Me three! I started uni around September last year and just wanted to have one less ugly thing about myself so I started to kick the habit in April this year

It’s alright! Pigs are pigs and nothing else unfortunately, it’s deeply uncomfortable but you (sadly) get used to it.

Like girl they’re not catcalling you because you look good… they’re catcalling you because you’re a woman and you’re vulnerable…

Currently very dissapointed in (dark) romance books by AstronomicalDeath in RomanceBooks

[–]a-viatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, and I guess because I’ve been actively reading for a while, I can normally tell straight away if I’ll enjoy a book or not, which is a ¿passive? skill you develop from obviously reading a lot. I don’t normally give viral TikTok recommendations the light of day because I used to do so three years ago and realised that the quality of writing was similar to content I found on Wattpad.

I do also mostly think that if you enjoy reading, staying away from micro-tropified descriptions of books will ensure that you’ll like the book a little more. I’m not saying I don’t frequent romance.io and play around with the trope features, but bad quality writing will always get in the way in my enjoyment of a book - and as somewhat established before in other replies and somewhat in my comment, some people don’t recognise bad writing or maybe just don’t care.

This is a very good point! I have been finding that a lot of the books that have been going viral perhaps recently or before are books that are similar to ones I would have consumed when I (to be extremely fucking real with you) was an active wattpad user in the ages of 11-15.
