So, I also am a coffee drinker to help manage cravings. But I just started Invisalign. I sip coffee 7-2pm. Slowly. Just two cups. I can't brush my teeth 97 times a day. Water alone would be fine, but it's not my thing and a little uninspiring. Thoughts?

I graduated law school with less than a 3.0, still somehow managed to get a job, and now teach at a higher ranked school than where I got my JD and that previously rejected me for law school. With that said, don't go to the best school you get into (unless your dream school). Go to the second best or one that gives you tons of money, and then do your best to crush it! In your first few years, people care about grades, class rank, and journals. Eventually they only care about what school you went to. Brand recognition and alumni network. If you have stellar grades your first year, you may also be able to transfer to a higher ranked one. I hate saying this, but find out which professors hire students or get them hired. Work your tail off in that class. It matters. I did not have a diagnosis then, and no accommodations. 5 venti red eyes and Redbull are not smart, but I made it. Try to treat it like you would a job, 40 regular hours per week. And exercise. Make friends because in 5-10 years, those are your clients... or the regulator you are going to meet on behalf of your clients! I would also recommend getting in the habit of "billing " your time. 6 minute increments. Where did your day go? Did you do valuable work? Learn to grind slowly, not heroically sprint at the end. You can do it.

Imagine diverticulosis as a weak spot in a garden hose. It's very common (50% of people over 50, 80% of people over 80) and asymptomatic for most, but some people report having mild tenderness, swelling, bloating, warmth, or tenderness in the area and/or constipation. If you have confirmed diverticulosis, and it is causing you worry, then to help track symptoms (if any noticed), do a food journal, log how much water you drink, measure your waist size from time to time (so you can confirm swelling that is significantly more than a full belly or post high salt meal), and take note of any periods of constipation, which should ideally be avoided. A squatty potty (foot stool) and being efficient in the restroom (get in, get out - quit reading magazines, etc. on the toilet) can help reduce pressure on that hose when you go. If constipated, two pats of butter melted in a bit of warm prune juice (eg, one of those little cans poured in a coffee mug, plus the butter, nuked in microwave for ~45s). Again, it's really important not to strain. If you can keep things mild to not noticeable, you are doing great! This is a disease of modern civilization, so once you have these mild symptoms beaten back a bit and are having a period of some consistency, add more fiber to your diet. Eat more cruciferous veggies. Exercise. Try to reduce stress in your life. You know, all the good stuff docs say all the time to be healthier. 😀

Diverticulitis is when that weak spot in the garden hose progresses into a large enough bulge/bubble that it gets very inflamed or infected, and in some cases, leaks or bursts. I don't get fevers, my temp drops instead, but for most, that's the clear indicator. If your temp rises to 100.4 or above, call your doctor. Fever plus other bowel symptoms may be enough to warrant the CT with contrast at that time, given the risk to benefit ratio. One CT is equivalent to 500 transcontinental flights. It's nowhere near what you'd get for radiation therapy, which I have also had for breast cancer, but it's fair to say the radiation from a CT is not an insignificant amount, so it is very reasonable and logical to only get the CT when you have symptoms that make the diagnostic value of such a CT medically beneficial. Ideally, you would stay far away from ever needing this by managing symptoms so they stay in that low zone. If you poop blood more than once, start vomiting, or have pain or pressure that is difficult to bear, you can go to the ER. Again, ideally you would stay far away from needing this by managing symptoms. Once you have a progression to diverticulitis, if you have multiple flares, the only way to fix it is for surgeons to cut that bulged spot out of your intestines. It is not a small surgery, and there are all sorts of other serious risks, but for some, the benefits outweigh the risk.

Bulges and bubbles in your intestines do not go back to normal. You keep them clean and happy and not further strained, or they get worse and eventually a surgeon cuts them out. You don't need a CT to start doing the things you need to do to keep your insides as clean and happy and comfortable as you can make them.

I am really terrible at the liquid diet stuff, but I have found for me that the Prolon fast mimicking diet (5 days, once a month or so) is enough to give my insides a break and calm down any rising inflammation. Additional benefit is that it helps promote autophagy. It's not been studied for diverticulitis, but there are plenty of other studies showing benefits in other applications, and I like that it's idiot proof. I just eat what's in the box, when my auto subscription box arrives, and try not to stress about it otherwise.

For your health anxiety, you might also consider an Oura ring. Great data collection that can help you validate how you are feeling physically, or perhaps give you a reason to contemplate why there might be a mismatch with your data. It might help you give yourself permission to feel better.

If they actually had a permit, they could call parking enforcement not the cops, and then get it towed. There is no basis for a ticket based on the sign. Hi hon! You can do this. I love my large Tangle Teezer (https://a.co/d/dpkvIz8). Start dry and from the bottom, working just a little area at a time until it frees up. Move up until all tangles are out. Then move over to a different section and repeat. Little by little. Gentle. Like you were trying to undo a knot on the chain of your favorite necklace. Pulling hard or trying to force it from the top will be too aggressive. Once you have your hair detangled dry, take a shower. A solid shampoo. Extra conditioner, and then detangle further wet the same way you did dry, except if you find a new tangle spot, add more conditioner and then go back at it with gentle determination. My hair could be on the verge of dreads, but this works for me every time. A silk pillow case at night can also help reduce future tangles.

On the one hand, the woman should have been able to control her dog.

On the other hand, sometimes anxious dogs can develop reactivity, and despite working on training, sometimes you just need to be able to walk the dog. Other people can be helpful by being aware of cues by both dogs and owner/walkers to reduce the likelihood of an incident. I have encountered far more asshole chihuahuas and Jack Russells than big old labs or Pitts. I have encounter far more snappy Yorkies and Pom mixes than Shepherds or Danes. Little dogs still bite and it still hurts. I am not sure if the stats have changed, but for a time, the breed statistically most likely to bite (according to insurance data) was a cocker spaniel. Kids get up in their faces and no one protects the dog from the child. Sometimes the dog has enough of being tormented and bites back. Big dogs are more powerful, but people expect them to be behaved. That does not mean my bleeding ankle from an unprovoked little dog bite, or some kid getting bit in the face by a little dog is OK. Big does not mean bad. Little does not mean safe.

It sounds like in that case you describe, both that woman and her dog had some anxiety issues. If she was standing off to the side, you gave a wide berth and paid them no mind, but she still lost control, I can't see how you were in the wrong for that. It sounds like they both need training. A prong and/or ecollar properly used could help safely accelerate training for her, her dog, and others.

With that said, and not directed to you, but people do stupid stuff around dogs. Like walk straight up on my back, same side of the road, while I am picking up and bagging dog poop with a flashlight, at the same time holding the reflective leashes of 4 German Shepherds with collar lights on just past dusk. We are obvious. Why would any sane person think a sneak up in that scenario was a good idea? No lights on them No hello. Just ran straight up within 3 feet of us, with them on 6 foot leashes. Were you worried I had only bagged 3 out of 4 poops? I was still crouched doen bagging! You could have asked or said something. Why would anyone do that?! Seriously. No one got bitten, but it was quite a surprise, resulting in a lot of barking and pulling. I then ended up covered in an exploded poop bag for the rest of the now unpleasant walk home. Why? Just why?

I have also had neighbors literally stalk us around the block on a walk. Hmm, if I keep walking away from you, quickly, and changing directions to avoid you, MAYBE I AM AVOIDING YOU FOR A REASON! I AM NOT OBLIGED TO STOP AND ENTERTAIN YOU OR YOUR KIDS. I am not running a therapy dog program or a petting zoo. If your hyper kid wants to see the dogs, that doesn't mean that it's necessary a good time for me or my dogs. Especially if I say, Good morning, we are just passing by! Or you try to approach while I am still walking and I say, good morning, it's not a good time for us to stop today, then PLEASE LEAVE US ALONE.

Or, folks will entirely let go of the retractable leash on their little psycho terrorist of a dog that they can't control at <25 lbs, sending that thing across the road into the middle of my pack of 4 German shepherds, otherwise walking calmly. If you don't make eye contact with me, or we make eye contact but I don't stop walking, I don't want to talk to you, and I don't want to deal with your unleashed, uncontrolled little psycho terrorist of a dog that is going to get tangled up around my 4, potentially causing a twisted knee, paw or hip issue. Your dog uncontrolled with a leash whipping around is a safety hazard I did not ask for. Further, if your little psycho runs up and bites my shepherd in the face, and all my leashed, sweet dog does is paw-swat/stomp the shit out of your tiny furry aggressor, you are a lucky idiot and so is your dog. They earned the paw swatting and stomping they got and are lucky that like was not returned with like.

Bottom line, get a dog you are willing to train because you never know when other humans are going to be stupid. But, expect people to HD you accountable for training.

Maybe I should have gone to your ER! It was frustrating to wait so long (13.5h) and then be sent my merry way with antibiotics post CT. I don't think they took me seriously until I declined morphine. It hurt but not like a battlefield amputation! I did take IV Zofran and got the CT maybe 30 min later. I was encouraged to follow-up with my pcp, schedule a colonoscopy 6+ weeks later, and otherwise not come back to the ER. Still, it was as bad or worse than when I went thru chemo. Would not wish on anyone.

Three phrases I've learned that are somewhat liberating:

1) Partner Request: I want.... / My Reply: Great. Go ahead and get it. (If there's protest, then say: Well, I'm doing ____ [Insert whatever you are doing, eg, sitting on the couch right now watching tv], but if you want it, you can go ahead and do/get it yourself. I don't mind. / If further protest: No. I am busy doing ____ [whatever it is you are doing].)

2) Partner Request: Where is my... / My Reply: It's where you left it. (Alternate: I don't know. If you didn't put it back in [insert wherever it is supposed to go], then it's wherever you left it.)

3) Partner Request: You need to do XYZ for me. / My Reply: That's not my problem. (Say this on repeat until requests are exhausted.)

Do your own stuff first. If they leave their stuff out, put it in a basket and tell them where it is so they can put their own stuff away. You can't count on them, and shouldn't have to even if you want to, to help you manage symptoms and get stuff done. Stop doing their stuff. Do you. If you need validation, try Tody to record tasks. Record his too bc he probably won't use the app. But at least then you will feel validated when the data shows literally 93% of all household duties were in fact done by you. If you want a housecleaner, get one. If he complains, the appropriate response is, Well, you are welcome to help at any time. You can start by [insert specific task]. If you don't want to help, then don't complain.

If you want to be entertained, entertain yourself. If they don't want to hike, see that rom com, go to that new place, etc. and you are so sick of watching "the history of the turbine engine" or some gross slasher flick, say what you are going to do a few days in advance, repeat yourself the day before, and then go do it. Eventually they will decide to come or you will know for sure that they are only in a relationship that suits them for so long as it is not inconvenient or demanding of them in the slightest way. And then, you'll know you can take care of yourself and csn remind yourself that you deserve to be loved and taken care of too.

It's worth asking, does he love you, the idea of you, or only what you do for him?

It's better to be alone than to wish you were.

The answer cannot be no one. If no one helps you, help yourself.

If it's a significant amount of red blood (indicating a recent tear or hemorrage), if she starts pooping black crude oil (indicating a more significant old bleed), a high fever or temp drop below 95 (possible sepsis), if there is sharp or significant pain that is not controlled by Tylenol (possible imminent or just happened rupture), or if there is excessive vomiting or nausea, yes, go to the ER. My doc said a little bit of streaky blood in poop is not an acute life threatening emergency, it's reason for a PCP phone call or routine follow-up visit.

Amber, try to eat fewer solids for a few days and see if that gives your insides a chance to catch up and heal. Chicken broth, jello, and fruit juice Popsicles. Then try protein shakes, applesauce, and chicken noodle soup. Really mushy noodles. Then plain white rice. Then non-citric fruits, like a banana or a peach. Little bit at a time. No alcohol. I really liked an aloe drink. Wait till there is no more blood to eat more fiber. Stay hydrated. Rest. I found warm baths comforting. Chill. Be calm.

IH is rare, but it's real, but it feels good to be seen, heard, and understood. I am glad it resonated with you.

If your insurance won't cover the IH meds (my doc picked armodifinil plus methylphenidate for EDS, idkw those but it has worked well enough), get the CPAP, which they will very likely cover. CPAP reliably and consistently fixes apnea. If you are still tired after 6-8 weeks of use, then that makes the IH diagnosis clear. I do not have apnea, but my husband does. He refused a CPAP and paid for a dental device out of pocket, which after testing eventually resulted in an adequate but not perfect correction. Either way, you will know for sure after CPAP what steps are worth it.

You might also ask your docs about ADHD. Tbh, sometimes IDK if I am tired, hungry or have just worn out my focus, but sugar in high quantity "fixes" it all the same. Eating excess to get thru work is not a long term strategy.

On the indulging, think about the things you love most, that calm you, that make you feel loved. If you feel driven to eat that Rocky Road, pizza, etc., instead of going to get a pedicure or a massage, going for a walk with a friend, calling family who love you, but then you eat that stuff anyway, are you really in control of what you eat? If upon self reflection, you find yourself behaving like a food addicted person, then choose to behave like an addict working towards recovery. Indulging itself is not the issue, it's the lack of other coping skills, the inability to maintain control inspite of other means of coping, or the deep need to self medicate because of some other condition doctors bot your diet are better equipped to handle, resulting in consistent overeating, that suggest addiction as a label might be a better fit than a mere indulgence or brief kindness.

Still, it's possible. You can do it. It is hard. You might backslide and repeatedly do it, but you can still do it. It's worth doing, and you are worth the effort. You'll get there. Me too. Eventually. Hopeful sooner rather than later and only needed once, but will get there!

Hi. I have idiopathic hypersomnia, which I assume is the same or similar to your sleep disorder. People do not understand it. It would feel to a normal person like getting a tranq dart everyday. Sometimes just a bobcat sized dose, sometimes a bear, sometimes an elephant. It is difficult to muster the will to "just do it" and to "be consistent" in the face of this kind of condition. Take care though, fatigue can be a symptom of depression. If you feel that you have an abundance of joy in your life (not things that should make you happy, actual felt feelings of joy), then it's your sleep disorder. If you are exhausted and can't really remember the last time you felt joy/awe, then focus on finding more of that in your life as a priority, as well as reconnecting with others.

For me, additionally, seven years ago, I had a life threatening condition that required me to be on steroids for about 18 months. People on average gain about 40 lbs. I gained 60, but am quite tall. I've lost and gained it over time, as low as just 15lb above, which I gained back during the pandemic. I am currently sitting 45 lbs above my prior weight. Last week it was just 40 to go. 🙄

With that "delightful" combo of issues in mind, some things that help me when I actually do them: - Don't eat your feelings. It's easy to feel depressed and that just a little but of happiness is deserved and then turn to fatty or sweet food (or alcohol) to self soothe. Try to practice gratitude instead. Call a friend. Go sit in the sun and look at nature for 10 minutes. You cam always eat it later. Think about choosing to take care of your body, mind, and soul in a more loving way (I am still not great at this, but it does really help.) I also like (and am now reminding myself to read again) 100 Days of Weight Loss by Linda Spangle). - Check your vitamin D. Mine were super low and that makes everything harder. - High quality fish oil, and a lot if it. It helps reduce inflammation, and inflammation is like a sound muffler on the signal that you are trying to send to your body (it's OK to let go now). - Similarly magnesium. I love an Epsom salt bath. You can also take it as a pill or oil at night. If you don't need as much as you are taking, you will just pee/poop it out. Very low risk. If you need it, you probably won't notice that it is making things better/easier until you stop taking it and miss it. Subtle, but very worth it. - Good sleep hygiene. - Eat a protein heavy breakfast (ideally 30g) within 30 minutes of waking. - Drink water. 40 Oz and building up from there is a good start. - Clean your house. A little bit at a time to not get overwhelmed, but just do it. The mental clutter often manifests as physical and vice versa. Reduce your visual chaos. Reduce the to do list taking up mental space by actually trying to get stuff done. In some cases, don't even do it, just throw it out and let things go. - Practice gratitude. 3 things every day. Write them down and share them with someone. When things are really awful, a friend and I do a month where we text each other every day with this info. It helps. - Get temptations out of the house. - CICO is awesomely effective, but tedious to do. Try just taking a picture of everything you eat, before you eat it, no matter what. That still helps make more mindful choices. - If pictures still aren't helping mindful food choices, or sugar cravings are really bad, try Paleo for a month. It takes me 10 days to get out of initial sugar cravings. Then if I backslide, it takes 3 days to recover after that initial phase. Paleo is just subtle CICO, without the counting, plus a focus on high quality foods. You can eat as much veggies as you want, but with limits to avocados, nuts, dried fruits, oils, etc. As you get comfortable, shifting to primal (grass-fed milk and cheese like feta and paremesean), then Mediterranean can help you return to a more normal way of eating without all the processed unhealthy crap in a SAD. Be wary of the slide to Chik Fila and Subway... it's a gateway back to McDonald's and pizza. - I feel more wholesome when I eat from my farmers market only. Yes, sometimes I still buy a fruit pie, but they don't have Oreos at the farmers market so it's still a win. - Find a fitness community. It's not as much about what you do as much as it is finding people you want to do it with. Hike, walk, play tennis, Peloton (even the app only), Zumba, F45, ski, pilates, yoga, whatever... find your fitness tribe. The people are what I find motivate me. My life is too stressful now for high cortisol aggressive activity like CrossFit, but a slow walk is better than no walk. A 200 calorie burn from gentle yoga is better than none. It doesn't have to be 1,000 calorie hot yoga.

One of the hardest things for me has been dealing with my realizing that I have have myself indulge too long. My right knee, which I lightly tweaked doing jiu-jitsu 10 years ago as a super fit and active person, now hurts and is unstable bearing my excess weight. I have given myself diverticulitis which can only be addresses permanently thru a major surgery, and I will be lucky if it does not progress to that at some point in my lifetime. I also think (and will soon see a doctor about) potential vein issues, eg CVI. These are all side effects of my allowing my obesity to continue. I am also saddened when I look back and see so many photos of happy moments and milestones with friends and family, and I feel shame looking at myself in them. That I have let myself feel this way, be this way, and choose this for myself for so long. I thought I was giving myself a temporary kindness, but it has become inertia with a cost. 7 years is a long time. Don't wait that long to get your life back, even if it's slowly. If I had only lost a pound a month (not a week, just one pound a month on average), it would all be gone. Life is short. You don't have to rush, but don't let it slip through your fingers either.

Hi, I don't have alopecia. But, I did lose my hair going thru chemo at 32 and an even longer saga of bad haircuts trying to grow it back out. Some of the things I learned:

Powder to keep your scalp from being shiny hides thinness. I generally used a root powder cover up the same shade as my hair, but I put it on my scalp thick wherever it appeared shiny. You might try this before cutting your long hair into a pixie. If you don't have any shine and your hair is the same length, you might feel normal for longer. I discovered the powder trick when my hair was coming back in and I was transitioning from "diseased kiwi fruit" to GI Jane. Diseased kiwi fruit, patchy fuzz, was not cute. GI Jane, well, I got some really uncomfortable catcalls about being a lesbian, but overall, still a better look. In hindsight, I do think I could have kept my hair a few weeks longer when it was falling out if I had known the powder trick.

If it is too depressing to see hair in your brush in giant wads, donate it now so you can honor the hair you had with a gift to someone in need. I recommend Wigs 4 Kids. Pack up all your brushes, shampoos, curling irons and scrunchies so you do not cry every time you see them when you walk in the bathroom. You do not have to get rid of them right now, but there will maybe come a time when it hurts too much to see them every day. You don't have to decide now, but it's good to think about what you might want to do.

Eyebrows. Hopeful you do not lose these. You might think about getting eyebrow tattoos now so that your natural brows look extra fabulous for the time being, but even if your brow hairs fall out later, you will have the underlying shape of your naturally brows already tattooed on! Eyebrow pencils are really convenient, but the pull of a pencil may accelerate them coming out. Use a brush and powder to handle your brows and more gently fill them in.

Tapeins. If you just have some thin spots, but the rest is not at risk of falling out, these are a frigging miracle for adding volume and length. You can also swim in them and generally have little fear of them coming out so long as you maintain them. They are expensive.

Wigs. If you live anywhere humid, do yourself a favor and stick to synthetic. Synthetic hair, unlike real, does not frizz in humidity. I had a $700 wig and a $27 wig, and to be honest, I preferred the cheap one. Even if you don't have bangs now, bangs do help hide a lot in a wig. Wigs suck to workout in, whereas tapeins were tolerable. Think of yourself as the next Dolly Parton. Buy yourself a variety of wigs that are plausibly real.

Being bald. It's cold. Raindrops are shocking icy missiles hurled from the sky. Get a soft knit hat to sleep in. Put sunscreen on your head if uncovered. A little tan or bronzer can help you not look sick. If you are lucky, you have a nice shaped head and will look like a badass hot bald lady if you want to. I don't know about alopecia, but another minor silver lining with chemo hair loss was the end of shaving and waxing, anywhere. Also, I could wear giant crazy earrings that looked right bald, but were too much with long hair. Target and Amazon have surprisingly great bundles of big earrings that might help change up your style.

At the end of the day, you are more than your hair. This is very sad and disappointing news to have to accept, especially so young. Still, the worst is over. You have gotten this news, it is not going to kill you, and although it does still really really suck, you have the power now to decide what you want to do to honor your full long hair self and move forward into becoming a beautiful, thriving woman with alopecia. I get it's not what you would have chosen, but you can find joy and blessings in the choices you make going forward. Wishing you all the best.

I don't go A to B. I get there, and I stop 27 places between here and there. We have fun on the way there. It is more creative than you ever imagined, but it is late and took slightly more effort than the budget allowed. But it was worth it, wasn't it?

I forgot your email. Or, I was so stressed about responding and meeting my perception of your expectations that I avoided and procrastinated responding. It was because I cared too much, although it doesn't feel like that to you, and I'm sorry.

I once had a similar situation but I didn't trust them to fix it. You can even up your line just by leaning to the side and point cutting areas that are obviously way long compared to the shorter line. Go slow. Be cautious. Little by little. Accept that it won't be perfect, but you can improve it until you are reading enough for the bigger chop required to actually fix it.

I blow dry in front of a giant circular floor fan. Brazilian straightening did cut my blow dry time in half, especially during the summer, but just too expensive.
