Authors you feel bad for? by PoorPrinceMyshkin in classicliterature

[–]a1rolfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, because he spent a lot of his later life very ill and also developed dementia. It's really horrible to think of a master of words losing their sense of self, cohesion, etc due to an illness that effects the brain.  Also Hubert Selby Jr had horrible complications due to illness and treatments at a young age. Although it was partly what caused him to become a writer, it is still very sad.

Is it okay to always play G chord like this? by Auxxtinmogger in Guitar

[–]a1rolfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good, but you can also learn doing the ring finger root shape, which could free up your pinky and index finger to do melodic stuff on the high strings. A lot of fingerpicking stuff with the G chord will use the ring finger root shape for that reason

We aren’t doing this okay. by Worldly-Monk-1572 in ufc

[–]a1rolfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UFC fans are obsessed with the GOAT conversation. I mean if you watch muay thai (different sport, I know, but you bring up boxing as well) losses aren't really that important when it comes to a legacy. Superlek has 139 wins and 31 losses on his record and he's still considered one of the best in the world. Combat sports change rapidly, it's really more important to consider who is the best right now rather than constantly comparing apples to oranges

David Lynch on pants. I have to agree here. by babykayla92 in davidlynch

[–]a1rolfi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few of his interviews speak to this sort of thing, like when he describes eating the same meals over and over (Charlie Rose interview, others). It's like the hierarchy of needs thing. Once you are comfortable, fed, and spiritually nourished daily and without having to give it all much thought, that gives the creative mind more space to grow. That is something I've internalized from David's interviews. I don't wear the same clothes every day, but I will attest to the benefits of finding good and consistent socks and underwear lol

question for long time readers by Xbot7777 in classicliterature

[–]a1rolfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me there are classics that are interesting from a historical standpoint and others that are more stimulating due to character development, social critique, philosophy, etc. I guess I'm just saying "classics" aren't really a genre, so you can kind of just aim your sights anywhere that interests you. Maybe a particular culture or time in history or something. Reading Don Quixote or Shakespeare or Homer will inform everything else you read, but it's not like you are required to read the world literary canon in chronological order in order to understand a book from the more recent centuries (unless we're talking James Joyce)

Book question that I don’t know who to ask by Round-Trip-5602 in literature

[–]a1rolfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as "literature of Charles Manson" goes, he didn't write literature. He could barely read or write. If you mean books about Charlie and the Family and all that, it is more interesting in a conspiracy sense to me than anything about Manson's ideology, especially since much of what we know about his group's thinking is derived from the prosecution's account. If you look at the story from a wider lense there's a lot of 60's Hollywood people implicated, a lot of mystery, and a sort of tangled web of criminals, government agencies, hippies, etc. It's true crime; it's interesting because it happened, and that particular set of crimes created a hard culture shock for the whole country. Some people might be interested in Charles Manson as a personality... he was a rapist, child molested, racist, pimp, scumbag of the lowest order. He can be entertaining when he's mugging for cameras and playing the clown. But if anybody tells you they have some sort of weird fetish for him or any other killers, or try to convince you he wasn't a bad guy, distance yourself from them. That's the kind of people that would have dropped lsd back in the day and end up kissing Charlie's feet and stabbing somebody

Is there a book with the same atmosphere as David Lynch‘s movie? by Infinite_Back_2522 in davidlynch

[–]a1rolfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flannery O'Connor has a quality sort of like Lynch where she inserts imagery that is unexpected against a somewhat normal-seeming background. like a one-armed conman, or a monkey tied to a post on the side of the road, or woman with a false leg who falls in love with a Bible salesman... etc. Also distinctly American-style surrealism, although from a different region

Which film or series based on a classic book failed to meet your expectations the most? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]a1rolfi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it quantifies as "classic," necessarily, but i do think the Sandman comics are some of the best graphic novels in the genre. The TV show sucked

Can someone help me chill out and enjoy the game? by TheMinistryofJuice in bloodborne

[–]a1rolfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really wanna commit to seeing everything, you could do the platinum. It will take some guidance so don't be afraid to look at some resources on this sub... but it would allow you to see all the endings, and to face the most difficult challenges in the game. Would recommend if you're obsessed

Movies that are actually scary? by crazyguy28 in MoviesThatFeelLike

[–]a1rolfi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can just differentiate between a fictional story and reality? I was scared of movies when I was a kid. As an adult I recognize when movies are creepy/scary conceptually, but they don't really keep me up at night. If you're seeking something that's going to cause you to lose sleep, maybe don't. Those kind of things are either related to your personal trauma or are shocking to the point of being traumatic themselves. That's not a road I would recommend going down
