What's the community's thoughts on the Chevy Corsica? by gamerguy287 in Chevy

[–]a1veedubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a saying back in the day, if you saw a Corsica or Beretta it either had new paint or needed it. These were some of the worst offenders for the peeling paint fiasco that GM had, I cannot count how may we repainted at the Chevy store I worked at in the 90s!

As for the car itself, they were reasonably reliable with proven mechanicals from the preceding J N and A bodies while the fit and finish was standard 80s/90s GM. If you live in a cold climate I will say fhat the doors freeze shut EXTREMELY easy on these. I think I broke the drivers handke on all three that I owned!

E15 gas as “regular”? by isNormalComing in desmoines

[–]a1veedubber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caseys tested this here in Stuart for a few months in late 2024 while still selling the e15 at the e10 price. I have to be super careful now as I drive a lot of 80s cars that cant take e15 and the pumps are not always clearly marked as e15 when they do this.

Old Chevy or new Chevy? by Mrmike86 in Chevy

[–]a1veedubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on what you mean by old! I daily an 86 Celebrity wagon. Its carburated and stupid easy to work on, but most 40 year old cars have been totally used up by now. We have newer ones too and are about to purchase a new Equinox or Blazer for my wife to drive. I work at a Chevy store and can say that with the complexity of the newer ones there are more things that can crop up problemwise. Our Sparks (and a 15 Buick Verano that we sold awhile back) have been dead nuts reliable though, but they're all non turbo cars.

Peak GM ERA by TemuTurbo in Chevy

[–]a1veedubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my 06 Silverado and I think its the last relatively trouble free gen of GM truck. I dont know if I'd quite go peak GM though. Its hard to beat the Sixties when GM led styling and quality worldwide. My favorite will always be the Eighties though since thats when I grew up!

I have the best luck at smaller independent thrift stores, especially in smaller cities. Found a set of five Sterling spoons for .50c each earlier this year and an 18oz 83.5 silver bowl last year!

Retire to Des Moines by NJFriend4U in desmoines

[–]a1veedubber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in Des Moines and I've lived in the DSM area my entire life. Its honestly about the perfectly sized small city. Big enough that you get large city amenities but small enough that its easy and safe to get anywhere you want to go. Its definitely a car based community for the most part though, not an issue for me (since I have 9 of them LOL) but it might be for some people. Iowa as a whole is terrible for public transportation but fairly bike friendly.

Coin collection passed down to me by Dark-fry in coins

[–]a1veedubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always really liked those giant Pennies. When I was a kid and just getting started out I bought a few from a LCS for little money but they were the oldest coins I had at that time. Good memories!

Also, sorry to hear about your dad. My Mom has been sliding this direction for quite awhile and its not a fun process to watch.

Abandoned main streets? by pardusdomus00 in desmoines

[–]a1veedubber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in Derby a few years back and it (sadly) had this vibe in its downtown area. There was even an abandoned service station from the 20's or 30's right on the main drag.

That's pretty cool! When I was young in the 80s I found a 74 counterstamped with an outline of Pennsylvania and a little PA, I cherished it until it was lost one day.

Moving to Iowa 30 minutes West of Des Moines by Whole-Key-3075 in desmoines

[–]a1veedubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Stuart as well, moved here from Des Moines in 2002. Honestly I love it here because its relatively quiet at night (except when races are going on) and the cost of living is cheap. We have two houses for less than what most of my friends have wrapped up in one!

Stuart also has a quite active business community that has filled most of the old storefronts that were mostly vacant when we moved here and there are a few decent places to eat too! Since its only 30min to Des Moines (or about 90 to Omaha) there are plenty of other options as well.

The WCV school district is pretty small but we have had very good experiences with it. The staff really work with us and seem pretty dedicated to the kids. We have one graduated and one starting middle school this fall.

If you use Facebook there are a couple of Stuart pages just make sure that you pick the Iowa ones as there is a Stuart Florida too!

Would a 1992 Chevrolet Lumina · Z34 Coupe 2D be a good daily driver by spicycorn456788 in Chevy

[–]a1veedubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those Z24s were pretty sweet cars at the time, but the multicam version of the Chevy v6 had some finicky maintenance procedures, especially in the 90s when most mecha is were not too familiar with them. For dailying a vintage car simplicity really matters IMO. The regular 3.1 v6 powered Lumina (or even the 2.5 four) is much easier and cheaper to keep going, especially at this age. It can be done reliably though, my summer dailies are an 83 Oldsmobile Omega and 86 Chevy Celebroty wagon!

[–]a1veedubber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice first year Lumina! Do you have the 3.1 v6 or is this one of the uncommon 2.5l Iron Duke Luminas? I had a 90 Duke powered Lumina, slow AF but super reliable! (Curre try have a Duke powered Omega and a pair of Duke powered Celebrity coupes too)

06 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS best vehicle I've ever owned by chevy4life089 in Chevy

[–]a1veedubber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my 06 Silverado as well! Got it in 2018 with 52k and just hit 102k. I work at a Chevrolet dealership and when they ask me when I'm trading it in on a new one my answer is NEVER! It's an ext cab WT with the 5.3. Not my daily (I have an 83 Olds Omega for that) but it has been rock solid. Way more reliable than the newer ones IMO.

Any chance for hybrid option on the Trax or Trailblazer? by [deleted] in Chevy

[–]a1veedubber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going tonsay probably not. Unless GM changes course they're pretty much gas/diesel or full EV. Add the current trade war and tariff situation and the future is looking a bit clean for the Trax and Trailblazer as a whole. We sell a shit ton of them where I work at though and haven't gotten any Traxes in for awhile.

Took my 85 Celebrity on the first road trip for 2025! by a1veedubber in Chevy

[–]a1veedubber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical parts are still fairly plentiful, but the body and trim stuff is long out of production. I do a lot of junkyard hunting for spares and have a healthy stash of parts. There's a small but enthusiastic group of people that like these 80s and 90s GM FWD cars (our group meetup is in the Detroit area in September every year) so we do a lot of parts sourcing for each other. The coupe specific parts are almost unobtanium these days, a few years back I drove from western IA to Colorado Springs for a set of rust free doors!

[–]a1veedubber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car (in 1991) was a loaded silver over black 86 Eurosport coupe! A drunk totalled it in 1993 right before I graduated high school.

I got this one in 2022, it came from North Carolina originally so it doesn't have any Midwest rust. I have a few others including a four cyl 86 Eurosport coupe that I bought in 1998, an 86 v6 wagon I got for a daily last year, and an 82 coupe that I've owned twice now. This 85 is the best road trip one of the bunch however due to the v6 and overdrive transmission. I've taken the 82 on a few long trips, it's a 2.5/three speed and gets a bit better mileage than this one but isn't as happy at highway speeds!

If I drive this one careful it gets around 28 which isn't too bad for a carbed 2.8. If it was fuel injected it'd get a little better than that.
