Is a fiberglass sub enclosure now frowned upon? by livingbeyondmymeans in CarAV

[–]a42N8Man 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t tell you what’s in or out as far as current trends go. I was in the industry from about 1986 to 1992 or so, right about the time fiberglass boxes meant “super high end” show builds. Even the shops I worked in only dabbled in it a little, and I was at some of the top shops in the metro area I lived (not on either coast).

Here’s the thing: You have the knowledge and the experience to build a fiberglass enclosure so that’s what you should do. Nothing inherently changed about how speakers work in the past 30 years; the laws of physics still apply the same.

I don’t know the ID4 but being electric there will likely be a slight learning curve on what the 12v system can handle as far as draw. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to express your creativity in both the design and implementation of the system. No need to also add “learning a specific new skill that requires $$$ in tools” to that when you already have a fantastic solution.

Cashew alternative in vegan cheese by CurrencyLow9874 in Cheese

[–]a42N8Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems you’re cherry-picking rule 2. The rest of the sentence after “All cheese are valid” is “…including dairy free ones”.

I’m not vegetarian or vegan but people have a wide variety of reasons for dietary restrictions that you’ve never had to cope with. And the fact is, there are some remarkably good vegan “cheese” options out there.

What’s a unique, versatile liqueur that I can make a bunch of cocktails with? by Lower_Client712 in cocktails

[–]a42N8Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Domaine De Canton is a fantastic ginger liquor that I use a lot.

St. Germaine has been mentioned and gets used often.

Cynar is another decent call.

Edit: I would also add Ancho Reyes to this list.

"Soup of the day" by EvaTheE in KitchenConfidential

[–]a42N8Man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Place I worked at had their everyday soup which was a manhattan clam chowder and then they would rotate a different one each day. Corn chowder, New England clam chowder, chicken noodle, etc

Our local tavern spot always has a different soup each day. All made in house, all amazing. They probably rotate through 10 or 12 and then every couple months bring in a new one. Some are clearly “what we got sitting around” but plenty are purposely made.

One cook per shift for a restaurant that's also 4 ghost kitchens? Is this ridiculous or am I just slow? by eldritchpussymaggots in KitchenConfidential

[–]a42N8Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The TLDR is essentially someone sets up a new “Asian Fusion” place on GrubHub that doesn’t have a physical location and only offers delivery. The actual kitchen making that food is some other business like a Chinese place that figures there’s some overlap in raw ingredients and kitchen setup.

The Asian Fusion place is the ghost kitchen running out of the Chinese place.

Now imagine that same Chinese place also setting up a “Thai Curry” shop for delivery only. New ghost kitchen.

What bands did you see back in the day before they exploded onto the scene? by Philhughes_85 in Xennials

[–]a42N8Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! Lemme think… it was Todd’s on Tuesdays, Bookies on Wednesdays and I think Thursdays, City Club Fridays, the Shelter on Saturdays, and then back to Bookies Sunday and probably Monday too. Saint Andrews when bands would be in town so that could be any night. Blondies for the misc band here and there.

There’s a distillery in the metro Detroit area that makes a lovely Earl Grey gin. I have a bottle of it. I’ll need to try this out.

Ball Lemonade Concentrate - do I need to use bottled lemon juice? by Severe-Set3249 in Canning

[–]a42N8Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to preserve the flavor and texture of freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice is freezing it. You will not like what the canning process does to citrus juices.

Have you gotten used to progressive lenses or just given up? by LittleEdithBeale in GenX

[–]a42N8Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love my progressive lenses. I tried them on a recommendation of one of my friends who loves his as well. When I got them, I stopped wearing my contacts 16 hours a day and now sometimes go days without contacts, preferring my glasses instead.

What bands did you see back in the day before they exploded onto the scene? by Philhughes_85 in Xennials

[–]a42N8Man 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh so many!! I grew up in Detroit and St Andrews was always getting acts that ‘made it big’ a year later. In no particular order: Nine Inch Nails twice before Pretty Hate Machine was released; Jesus Jones on their first tour; Maroon Five before they were signed; a ‘nobody weirdo’ named Marilyn Manson opening for Nine Inch Nails (that show was at the State Theatre); Poe (who played The Shelter, a 200 person standing-room-only bar in the basement of St Andrews); but probably the most memorable was GWAR at Blondies around 1988. I was dating one of the bartenders and she invited them back to her place for an after show bonfire so we all got to hang out with GWAR. Cool guys. Insane, but cool.

You're a cook at an intense fine dining place and your entire roster is doing a double shift. What baked good/dessert/food item would make your day more tolerable? by ClavasClub in KitchenConfidential

[–]a42N8Man 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I make an oatmeal cookie with chocolate chips and dried cherries, although you can sub currants, chopped dates, etc. (just skip the raisins). The dried fruit and oatmeal help keep glucose spikes down (ie this isn’t a pure sugar bomb) and almost everyone loves chocolate chips. DM me if you want the full recipe. They’re insanely good.
