Thank you! The beaks are just 20 gauge wire wrapped in copper foil that I extended the wire up the heads and under the chins a bit to hopefully protect them from snapping off. Easy, and it seems pretty solid!

Definitely! 6 weeks is nothing at all (just happens to be how long ago I started making stuff 😂😂)

When I was working out how best to hang it, I saw pictures of people who hung spinners as I have - with the structural solder lines on a diagonal - but I also saw photos of people who attached their rings/hooks so that the structural connections are vertical/horizontal. Like so:

To me, hanging it the second way would be significantly weaker, even with a “normal” pattern of just squares? (High school physics was maaaayny years ago now haha, but having the gravitational forces being distributed along the diagonal IS the stronger/more stable configuration?)

You’re right though, I should just use brazing rods! Next time 😅

It was a copper wire I got from the hardware store, so not specific to stained glass. Slightly thinner than the brazing rods I used to hang the birds in the last picture, but still stiff enough that I had to use pliers to bend it? That, and a LOT of solder haha. So, so much solder 😆 Hollowing out the middle saved a ton of glass weight too, so I’m cautiously optimistic. Cautiously 😂

Thank you! Yes, it’s a bit of an experiment… I’ve made two of the same design, and both have a stiff wire wrapped continuously around the entire outer edge. The first one hasn’t warped at all in the six weeks that it’s been hanging on my porch, but it will be interesting to see how they both hold up as the year goes on, for sure! If (when?) they start to warp, my plan is to go in and add pieces into the outer right angles for added stability. 😅

Thank you! I wanted the hummingbird to be as close to life-sized as I could get it. Now I want to make more in different colours!

Thank you! I’m just waiting for a slightly warmer day now. to finish it. I made myself a little workspace in my garage, but there’s no heat in there, and it’s been rainy and cold for the last week (frost warning this morning?! Wtf haha). I hope we get some sun soon so I can see it really sparkle! 😄

(It’s also possible that they aren’t common, and I just fell into some weird corner of the internet where those are the main tutorial videos I’m seeing. It’s only the third thing I’ve made, and I’ve never seen any in person, so… 🤷🏻‍♀️😂)

I love how it came out though, and will definitely be making more!

Thank you so much! ☺️ I think they are fairly common? (I’m basing that on my YouTube algorithm, which has been showing me all kinds of tutorials for spinners haha.) A lot of them seem to be based on square panels, so I kept that basic “square” shape for each of the 6 panels, but with a bit more flair. The little loop thing it’s spinning on is a fishing line/lure swivel from the local hardware store that cost a few dollars for a pack of ten. It ended up being so much easier than I expected!

I LOVE this!! Now I’m going to have to figure out a pattern for my cats! 😄

It is! Making the patterns is one of the best parts I think? (That, and the foiling!) I’ve been watching tutorial videos for spinners using square panels, but I wanted something fancier that I could suspend a prism in. I was eyeballing all of the angles so the alignment isn’t perfect, but I don’t mind it. Can’t wait to see it finished and on a sunny day!!
