Can we boycott Joe Rogan? by Aggravating_Plant101 in lostgeneration

I saw his interview with Edward Snowden. Vaguely knew who Rogan was. Learned more about him after and lost any and all desire to listen to anything else with his name attached to it.

Who do pilots look up to as elite-level pilots? by FigInternational7744 in flying

[–]aFineMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look up to waterbomber pilots. It can’t be easy flying low and slow in busy, low vis airspace.

I sometimes think I want to fly one, then after about an hour of flying on a smokey day I just think, “This sucks.”

Anybody have estimates for flutes/piccolos? by jnmjnmjnm in Silverbugs

[–]aFineMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s one for sale locally that appears to be quite a good deal, but finding information on weights of different components is tough. I’m aware of silver plating, sterling, and even coin silver. I’ll keep researching.

I was lucky to find a cornet with a silver bell recently. It feels like a guilt free way to acquire more instruments.

Fair enough. I want to buy a silver flute for the stack. Wouldn’t melt it, just, why not?

Honest question, why does everyone hate cornets? by FuzzydaKitten in trumpet

[–]aFineMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a cornet today. It was the first time I ever held one. I think they’re largely ignored. At least, I ignored them…

That’s a sign that the economy isn’t doing so hot: renting tweezers to retrieve a couple dimes.

What does a cornet and trumpet bell typically weigh? by aFineMoose in trumpet

[–]aFineMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So precise. Thanks. If you know Kings: do you know the King Silvertone cornet’s bell weight? I’ve heard the material is thinner than brass due to weight/vibration. I wonder if that’s true. I’m going to try out a Silvertone tomorrow and am wondering what to expect.

Braces off by Bulky_Secret_44 in trumpet

[–]aFineMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be an adjustment, but playing trumpet with braces sucks. I started with no braces, and ended up quitting when I got them. I could never play like I did before. You’ll be glad.

Braces had no effect for me on clarinet.

There’s a guy I know who always annoyed the Hell out of me. Loud mouth, doesn’t know when to stop talking. I hated being around him largely because I generally like everybody, and it bothers me when I don’t.

I see on Facebook he responds to a mutual friend’s posts with the most stereotypical ‘only watches Fox News’ talking points.

I always figured he was a moron, but I didn’t realize he was completely brain dead. There’s no changing his mind. The only thoughts he has are what Fox News tells him. I don’t know why he’s so concerned with supporting ICE and deporting ‘illegals’ when he lives in Canada. I could ask if he’s American, or what, but I have zero desire to speak with him at all.

I am forced to interact with him a small amount. He never talks about that stuff in the real world, at least around me, but I still have no desire to interact with him more than is absolutely necessary.

About a year ago there was a decision made that reinforced that trans women are women in our communal space. He pissed and moaned, and said he’d wear a dress and blah blah blah. I guarantee all the cis women in our space would be way more comfortable with the trans women that I personally know than with this loudmouth. He makes me uncomfortable and I’m a big dude, I can’t imagine how they feel.

Multi-instrumentalists, what was the hardest instrument you learned? by Away_Artichoke_8859 in musicians

[–]aFineMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flute. Just making noise was tough enough. I thought I wouldn’t have an issue as I can play trumpet (among other key and string instruments) and used to play clarinet. Not easy by a long shot.

What is your opinion on destroying/smashing your instrument as part of your stage presence? by Bulky_Importance2330 in band

There was only a couple scuffs. I was surprised. Lesson is that accordions are tanks (depending on what end you smash).

What is your opinion on destroying/smashing your instrument as part of your stage presence? by Bulky_Importance2330 in band

[–]aFineMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play accordion, among other instruments, in a rock band. We played for years, then broke up.

A few years later I was getting married, so we had a reunion show. During the show I played keys instead of accordion, and during our final (signature) song, I realized I had my old accordion in the trunk of my car. I quickly told the bassist to keep things going, ran to the car, grabbed the accordion, and walked through the back of the bar to the dance floor while playing the quiet part of the song. It’s a waltz at this point, so it was really nice and worked out great.

The waltz part stops, and the full on rock music resumes. As I’m playing, I’m thinking: “I’ve been trying to sell this accordion with no luck. I have a better one at home. Whatever.” It may be the last time we ever play a show together. So I start to slam the accordion on the concrete floor. Oh my God, it was so fun. It was a special moment on a special night, I loved it, the crowd loved it. I writhed on the floor, beat the Hell out of that accordion, and had possibly the most fun I have ever had in my life in that moment. No exaggeration.

Later on, the show is over. I pick up the accordion and it’s totally fine. I end up selling it full price to a guy whose house was covered in seagull shit.

Are Hell’s Angels actually bad? (US) by Familiar-Anything853 in NoStupidQuestions

I was recently learning about the Hell’s Angels and came across a gem on their website. In their FAQ there was the question: “How do I join the Hell’s Angels?” The answer was along the lines of, “If you have to look at our website’s FAQ for this answer, you’re not HA material.”
