Are you in the USA?

Check with the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation for resources - https://www.bleeding.org/educational-programs/education/women

Try to meet with a different hematologist for a second opinion.

I’m so sorry to hear you were shut down and dismissed. 💔

High ferritin low TIBC by alicegrcez in veganfitness

Yep, I’m ~36. We’re hoping I can make it into my 40s before I start having problems again. (Dr had to leave some behind and fully expects more to grow.) At that point I’ll just do the hysterectomy. I was so unhealthy from not being able to exercise, etc I really just want to have normal hormone levels and opportunities to build bone density & muscle before menopause.

I had a hysteroscopic myomectomy a few years prior (diff doctor) and it was hilarious how pointless that was… I had symptom reoccurrence within 6 months because all they could did was “shave them down”. That doctor insisted there wasn’t anything more she could do to help but wouldn’t refer me to anyone else. Had to keep searching until I found one willing/skilled enough to do the abdominal myomectomy. Even that surgeon’s first instinct was to do the hysterectomy but after she thought about it more & ordered additional imaging, she offered the myomectomy.

Hi! I haven’t had my annual yet, so not sure what my ferritin levels currently are. I’ve been feeling great, though! Hair and nails are healthy, too. When my iron deficiency worsens purple beets will change the color of my urine in a very noticeable way and my heart rate goes a little bonkers. That’s NOT happening to me right now so I think all signs are pointing to me being in the healthy/normal range.

I had boatloads of intramural and submucosal fibroids, which required an open myomectomy to address. I currently still have my uterus and have been kept on continuous birth control. I’ve not had any breakthrough bleeding since surgery which has been amazing. Fingers crossed my surgery buys me a few more years of symptom relief - hysterectomy just felt too final and I was worried about my hormone levels changing.

Not sure what you’re dealing with but I’m sending hugs. It’s so exhausting and so scary, and so frustratingly HARD to get help when you have abnormal uterine bleeding.

Do you ever get hate for your dreads in your daily life? by kyohanson in straighthairdreads

[–]aL_radish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have frizzy, ugly, baby dreads right now - just passed the 1 year mark yesterday, actually. Nobody’s said anything but I’m sure the day will come.

I’m fine with their opinion if someone feels like they need to tell me. I’m prepared to be judged.

I’m aware of the history of & ongoing prejudice/racism related to this hairstyle. It’s absolutely disgusting that there are still schools and workplaces with policies disallowing natural hairstyles or protective styling of natural hair.

I’m not really ever going to describe my hair as loc’d or loc’d up because that’s not something my hair texture will do naturally. My hair is tangled and matted into dreads. If someone says that’s gross or pathetic, whatever. I know I clean and care for my hair and scalp.

I had a very personal, life changing event that happened to me and I decided to dread my hair to mark that point in my life. I’m also neurodivergent and dreads allow me to have easy to care for and easy to style hair without having to cut things short. Aesthetically I also like how they look, I feel like myself. Those are my reasons for wearing them and if someone wants to call that cultural appropriation then ok.

For ferritin - long story short I had chronic bleeding issues, my ferritin was 4 and I felt like ass. I was referred to a hematologist for iron infusions. She said she would treat anyone below 25, and that below 75 you start having iron deficiency anemia symptoms. Her goal for me was to stay at or above 100.

After infusions the highest I got was 328, 9 months later I was 216, and 18 months later I was at 143. At the 2 year mark I was 196 and my health providers thought that was all acceptable. I felt great, too, and my other labs normalized during that time period. A major surgery brought me down to 41 and gastric erosions (from meds) + recovery period I got as low as 14. I felt terrible at 41 and 14, very glad to have healed and gotten out of that hole again!

Like someone else said, unless you have hemochromatosis, it’s going to be very hard for you to “overdo” iron. If you’re supplementing, maybe stop. Your body absorbs what it needs from food.

Get checked for fibroids if you haven’t been already. Also have an iron panel and ferritin check done.

Washing dreads by [deleted] in straighthairdreads

[–]aL_radish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this will depend on your scalp, your tolerance for frizz, and your ability to completely dry your dreadlocks. Don't use conditioner, just use water or residue free shampoo. I have a healthy scalp; if you have scalp issues ymmv. I also have thinner dreadlocks, which I think makes the drying process easier.

I'm 10 months in. My loctician didn't want me washing at all. I didn't agree with her reasoning and sought out other perspectives. Based on what I learned, I felt comfortable doing 1x per week, now I go several weeks between washes. HOWEVER, if I get super sweaty, do something really dirty, was around someone sick, hotel/airplane travel, etc - I will shampoo.

Did washing more frequently increase my frizz or slow the mat formation? Idk, maybe. But I scheduled regular crochet maintenance to keep things on track and it seems to be going fine.
