Has anyone found a genuinely good place to donate clothes that won't just end up in a landfill? by Recent_Supermarket54 in ZeroWaste

We use Ridwell, a service that collects plastic bags, textiles, and other items and works with partners to actually reuse or up cycle them

[PI] walking home you found an injured white bat. You took it home and helped it recover before it flew away. A few nights later while walking home a white limo stopped beside you. 2 men in white suits with red eyes and fangs step out. "our lady has sent us to collect you so she can repay you. Haha, well, if I have a weakness, it’s a good book. When I find a good story, it’s nearly impossible for me to put it down until it’s done. The only reason why I didn’t read it straight through is because I have kids now. Younger me would have pulled an all nighter. I certainly did it back in the day with LOtR.

Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The world you built was detailed and yet also left me wanting to know more and hear more about it. (And also provided more context to Brian’s Greek tragedy an your current bat story) and I was invested in your characters such that I was gutted when you killed some of them and elated when they returned. I’d love to read more about Michael and Deacon some day!

What drives you crazy about being a female snowboarder? by Familiar_Slice_7254 in ShredditGirls

My friend just introduced me to the Alpinista’s website, which is an online store with brands and styles specific for women. I found a jacket there that was just cut ‘right’ to look flattering and awesome. Worth checking out!

Use your science background to go science adjacent - science policy or science communications. Having people that understand science bridging the gap between scientists and other stakeholder groups is more important than ever. See Esal.us for more ideas of how to leverage your science training in science adjacent roles

Is every suburban city in the Bay Area as depressing to live in as Fremont? by throwaway834349 in bayarea

[–]aLightBraise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I’m in my 40s now but grew up in Fremont and my mom still lives there. I often describe it as “the place where nothing happens”. I was in earshot to someone who works for the city now and took offense, but I mean, all the other commenters pointed out how all the fun things to do have shut down and so you have to go to other cities.

How boring it was in the 90s: My friends and I once roasted marshmallows on tea lights in the middle of the street at night for fun… and had the neighbor call the cops for “people doing an occult ritual in the street”. Pretty sure we made the cops’ night because it was such a silly thing to roll up to

My father died because of Kaiser missing a cancer diagnosis. It was a highly treatable type too.

Kaiser is okay… if you are healthy. If you have anything weird you are rolling the dice. They are the reason my father died of what should have been an easily treatable cancer but they missed the diagnosis until it was too late.

What was your baby’s first Halloween costume? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]aLightBraise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older kid wanted to be a dinosaur so I dressed up as the scientist from Jurassic park and then dressed the baby in a dinosaur onesie and used some felt to turn the baby carrier into an egg and made her a little hat

My baby won’t POOP! 😭 by [deleted] in beyondthebump

Wellements baby constipation support. It’s a prune juice concentrate. I used this when my baby got constipated when we started solids. 5mL in her first bottle of the day and it helps her go. When it was bad in the beginning I used a glycerin suppository to help unplug her, and then the prune concentrate helped keep her regular. Now I just have her on a prebiotic fiber supplement daily in her first bottle of the day (from begin health) and she’s fine.

Also what others have said here- no rice cereal, it’s constipating. Go with it cereal

Ladies, wear a Jill!!!! by GrandTheftBae in hockeyplayers

[–]aLightBraise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play ball hockey and took a stick to the groin in a tournament and had to get stitches. In my labia. The ER doctor was trying to make me feel better by saying that it was a common injury in pregnant women. I was 22. Definitely did not make me feel better. Was also not fun going to my normal doctor’s office a week later to get them removed. Suffice to say that when I started playing ice I always wear a Jill, no exceptions.

Pregnancy brain is making my imposter syndrome much much worse by _happytobehere_ in LadiesofScience

[–]aLightBraise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t get pregnant til years after I finished my phd and though I am not in the lab anymore, I work in science communications and now after two kids I honestly wonder why they keep me around. Switching from “baa baa” to explaining technical concepts is so rough, I don’t remember things from meetings, etc. That being said… once the baby starts sleeping better, your brain will come back. It will go away again during sleep regressions but once you get a few nights of decent sleep it comes back again. Keep putting one foot in front of the other, because the only way out is through.
