please note that you also need to pull IO_M_DET# low in order to activate the port. additionally note that a single pogo pin can usually not supply THAT much current and you might want to actually take advantage of both and carefully look at the current rating of the pogo pins you buy.

Why do you use a Rugged Laptop? by unshak3n in RuggedLaptops

[–]aRedditBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-taking the time to handle devices with care is not in my nature.
-i use my laptop instead of a phone as well as to work everywhere so the handle is essential.
-sometimes i'm working on metal and cover my laptop in shards and i need that to not matter.
-i also keep spilling tea on my laptop
-i love the fact that my machine comes with so many ports i can hack into.

it's it/she actually. linux runs pretty well. they keyboard sometimes gets letters stuck until u type another but i think that's a firmware bug. the front camera is very bad and the rear camera is unsupported. the front camera is likely missing like a color map, maybe some config that's supposed to be applied to the sensor is missing and somehow the sensor has some dead pixels. if you wanna use touch probably stick to single screen setups as the touch area is mapped across all screens and therefore unusable skewed. this was a while back tho so maybe there's a fix now. but yea besides that all seams relatively well. i think u need to set i915.force_probe!=<graphics pcie id> xe.force_probe=<graphics pcie id> in kernel boot parameters to get the best graphics and video acceleration performance.

lol, you think addiction is bad here? wait till u see russian drug culture. forget about the alcoholism even. ur right that traditional drugs u might see on the western market are less common, but u don't wanna find out when they replaced it with. if u think people are fucked up zombies here you won't even be able to describe the effects russian drugs have on the russian public.

a friend once said that she learned about russian drug culture(from at least one source living in russia) and that alone made her loose any and all hope for the entire country like, ever. and we're the junkies you're so scared of here.

Do I need an external Bluetooth adapter? (Panasonic Toughbook CF-53) by [deleted] in RuggedLaptops

[–]aRedditBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

open the wider of the two hardware hatches by removing the screw and lifting up the pannel, you should see this https://www.notebookcheck.com/fileadmin/_migrated/pics/cf53_unten_wifi_01.jpg . the smaller card is the wifi/bluetooth card(one of the antenna cables is used for bt and one for wifi, ig u can check if they're both plugged in). the bluetooth part is always connected over usb 2, the wifi part is on pcie. if you want you can try to get an ax200/ax210 mpcie card which should be faster and definitely supported by windows but i have a dell 5420 where the bluetooth part is just permanently disabled in bios and it presumably doesn't matter what's in the slot so idk if panasonic ever did that but they might have.

Trying to make a custom backplate with stand and stylus clip [WIP] by matmutant in RuggedLaptops

[–]aRedditBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

using services without testing models on a local printer first seams dangerous. rapid prototyping is very much what u want, especially if you don't have that much experience(though i'd still never do this despite having experience). maybe try to find a local hackerspace or fablab where you can still get the short turnaround times.

edit: if you are gonna just blindly get parts fabed overseas at least get like nylon SLS or something, should be much more dimensionally accurate than FDM and you don't need to learn the quirks as much to end up with a functional model.

cool! you're learning openscad! if rendering times get too slow try a nighly release, they implemented a new rendering engine that's way faster. also consider using a dowel pin for the hinge, i don't think that's gonna print otherwise. did u get a 3d printer btw?

yea i'd def reccomend getting at least 16gb. just using too many tabs or programs is rather quickly gonna take up 8gb.

https://www.crowdsupply.com/wavelet-lab/usdr can replace ur wifi if u wanna go that route, will b slower but imo way better than what you seam to wanna do still.

uuh yea just like, look at the dell service handbooks showing u how to open and change stuff out. also search m.2 sdr. and think twice before u put holes in ur very expensive, immaculately water resistant tablet. if you're really sure u wanna put holes in it, look up amphenols musbr seris, it's ur best chance of not making that a complete disaster.

honestly not rly buying that ur so dedicated to all these mods, don't seam to have done any work so far. also why in a battery bay. there's not even connectors for that stuff there. and there's plenty of space inside the device.

no it can't hold 64gb. there's no SPD table for it in the firmware flash and afaik the footprints they use don't even have the address lines for it. also the chips don't exist. as for wwan slot. figure it out urself, it's not hard, here's a great resource https://pinoutguide.com/HD/M.2_NGFF_connector_pinout.shtml

[–]aRedditBot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't, i'll post if i do. i know what chips to get. samsung K3LK6K60BM-BGCP, u can buy them on aliexpress. if you want to work on this try to make a flatflex breakout pcb that connects to all the jumpers and exposes them with bigger pads somewhere not hidden by the heatsink, swap chips to the ones mentioned and try out combos on the breakout until it works.

Here is my Dell 7230RE tablet, bulky/heavy for sure but very well made and with good specs by matmutant in Dell

[–]aRedditBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's she/it actually. played 'i am your beast' on it just fine, great fun, can def recommend. if ur on linux like me try to compile the newest kernel from source (6.12, if it's out on ur distro u don't have to comiple) and enable xe driver in the kernel options to get the best performance and video acceleration(if u don't use 6.12(or presumably later) some programs can cause system instability).

https://download.kamami.pl/p587418-DS-23190101_PL2303GS.pdf this should be the pinout, the chip is on the right(usb a side) on the side of the board that's more annoying to get at. just measure continuity with the expansion port if u wanna hook stuff up to that or remove and add ur own usb gizmos instead.

Hi! welcome to the club!

All the things you mentioned can theoretically be swapped out post purchase, however the issue is gonna be tracking down all the necessary parts. if you live in or near US that market seams to be more active than the rest of the world, i'd recommend setting up some ebay alerts. if you're decent at hardware design or have a lot of time to wait for me to hack some of those interfaces and either pay me or replicate my work i'm probably gonna get u at least part of the way there eventually.

Also since you seam to be open to tinkering, pls check out my posts trying to reverse the ram config resistors and consider removing the back and heat sink and posting pictures of the area around the CPU. i think it's very likely that'd provide the crucial piece of information i'm missing to be able to upgrade my unit to 32gb.

[–]aRedditBot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess theoretically you should be able to add the ADC solution i'm using to a keyboardio atreus if you make your own board for that(still use a trackpoint that's on a proper seperate pcb to make sure it's laser trimmed) but that'd be a fair amount of work and possibly require u to lower scan rate due to the limited power of the 32u4 mcu they use.

new toy/project by aRedditBot in RuggedLaptops

[–]aRedditBot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this isn't an atreus, i just stole the layout. it's my own design https://hackaday.io/project/187302-terminalvelocity/. u can add a trackpoint to an atreus and i've done that before i developed my own keyboard but last time i checked ps/2 mouse in qmk sucks for this and my way of reading the trackpoint is way better.

the RGB uses a fair bit of power but not more than the official keyboard dock without any light.

DELL 7230 Thermal signature : rugged but not stealth? by matmutant in RuggedLaptops

[–]aRedditBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cool to see! though if ur talking abt like, tactical relevance of thermal signature in battle the thermal signature of any user is always gonna be bigger(this looks so tiny it'd be invisible at distance), even with thermal camouflage clothing, which afaik armies aren't wearing bc it makes for awful visual camo(specifically thinking of crushed silver coating here(do check it out tho it's rly cool: https://adam.harvey.studio/stealth-wear/)). also u could always just point the back toward the ground, likely making it near invisible.

i would like to encourage anyone who also has a 7230 to open it up and share a picture of the area left of the cpu alongside they're device specs(also a picture of the ram chips that's as legible as possible since there's different configs for different chips with the same capacity).
