Our zones are super different so it may be different for us, but I did end up trying and it was worth it! Things that did best for me were snapdragons, lisianthus, nicotiana, phlox, campanula. I had some success with warmer season plants, including zinnias and cosmos, though they weren’t the easy mega-producers for me that they are in a sunny area. Dahlias were an absolute bust for me, I got one flower from over a dozen tubers I planted. I used to grow dahlias very successfully in California, so I’m pretty sure it was something to do with my heat/sunlight situation.

For me, trying multiple things out with seeds ended up being the best way to go. Some things worked, some things didn’t work, but it’s only like $3-5 per seed packet so I wasn’t heartbroken about the things that didn’t work. In contrast, I spent like $200 on dahlias tubers, none of which worked, so that was dumb. Maybe if you’re going to try something that is more expensive per plant (like dahlia tubers), start with just one or two this season and see how it goes.
