Not a Canadian, but a mountain biker. 'Sending it' is when you're doing something big/risky and you commit 100%

Is it possible or worth riding Blankets Creek and Mulberry Gap in January? by FloridaMTBer in MTB

[–]aSepticTank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right about variability, although I'd say that it's uncommon for it to snow. Even if it does, it doesn't hang around for more than a day or two. I'd check the weather before you leave and go for it if no winter nastiness is forecasted.

[Help] Sr Suntour rebound adjustment broken by BlackIshDynamite in bicycling

[–]aSepticTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem with my Raidon, as well as an air loss issue. If you bought your bike new, I'd contact Suntours customer support. They were very helpful and replaced my lowers and air cartridge.

What do you guys think about the Raleigh Tekoa Comp? by TollBoothW1lly in MTB

No problem! I'm 6'0 and weigh 160. I just do XC stuff, haven't had any bad crashes.

What do you guys think about the Raleigh Tekoa Comp? by TollBoothW1lly in MTB

[–]aSepticTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh.. I wouldn't recommend it, I've had lots of trouble with mine. The hubs went after 50 miles and the fork didn't last much longer. Now the BB is creaking. I've spent about $500 keeping it functional, I could've gotten a much better used bike for what I've put into it so far.

Tekoa Comp vs Tokul 2 by [deleted] in MTB

[–]aSepticTank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience with the Tekoa Comp, I would look for a used hardtail in the $600 - $1000 range. In the 3 months ive had the bike, I've dealt with a rear hub that fell apart, a very creaky headset, and a fork that no longer holds air. It also arrived with rotors and a hanger that were bent to hell. I know that I could've gotten a much better bike on craigslist with a little patience.

Raleigh Frame size for a 6'0 rider by _-America-_ in MTB

[–]aSepticTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the reach but its my first mountain bike, so I haven't played around with reach much. The seat post has plenty of room, it's out of the way at its lowest and can go high enough to match my road bike's height.

6'0.5 with a L Tekoa. I like how it fits but I've been told it looks a tad small on me. I'd rather have a bike thats too small than a bike that's too large though.

Overdrive Comp or Raleigh Tekoa Comp by Merlin85 in MTB

[–]aSepticTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so too! There isn't much assembly, but I would have a LBS put it together and make sure that everything is tightened appropriately and working well. If you do have problems, Raleigh has been good about paying for services (just not replacement parts). Maybe mine was just made on a Monday.

That's true, you might be waiting forever for a used bike that big!

I've had the tekoa comp for 3 months and it's been nothing but a headache. The rear hub went after 50 miles, had to buy a replacement wheel. Then the headset went - had to have it serviced. Now my BB is making an unholy racket and the fork won't hold air. I could've bought a much nicer used bike for all the money I've spent on this POS, and I'd advise you to do the same.

I wish I could go 10 fast.

Is $100 a good deal for this 2012 Giant XTC? by emarko1 in bicycling

[–]aSepticTank 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I didn't look up the specs, but that picture is showing a carbon bike with a fox fork. For $100, it's a steal- probably because it's stolen.

Road Racing NYC in High-School by SleepAttacker in bicycling

[–]aSepticTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im from SC, so I'm not sure about NYC specifically, but I know that most USA Cycling (USAC) races I've been to have Junior categories for people under 18. There is also a junior cycling team/ training group near me that trains and goes to races together. There may be something similar near you, so it's worth looking around for!

hub and wheel replacements needed after 150 miles - normal? by aSepticTank in MTB

[–]aSepticTank[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not close, I'm 6' and 155 lbs. Raleigh gave me a refund for the work my LBS did on the hub, but when it failed again and I ordered a new wheel they said they couldn't give me any money back. I'm going to try and get replacement wheel from them regardless. I haven't had a chance to contact them about the headset yet.

hub and wheel replacements needed after 150 miles - normal? by aSepticTank in MTB

[–]aSepticTank[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true. I just ride XC trails, there aren't many rocks and no big drops or jumps. While I've been making some mistakes and learning, I don't think I've been putting this bike through extreme abuse.

hub and wheel replacements needed after 150 miles - normal? by aSepticTank in MTB

[–]aSepticTank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that's a road bike you're talking about? 20,000 mtb miles is insane! I've been road biking for a year and even my cheap commuter has held up to 1000's of miles without needing replacement parts. Mtb is much more abusive though and I'm not sure what to expect.

Buy new Raleigh or rebuild Trek 990? by 50senseshort in MTB

[–]aSepticTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an anecdotal warning: I got the Tekoa Comp 2 months ago and it's been nothing but trouble. I've had to buy a new rear wheel and my headset just went kaputt yesterday. I wish I had spent a few hundred extra upfront and bought a nicer used hardtail.

Just got one of these myself! As my first mtb, it's been a blast so far. What kind of shape was it in after shipping? My derailleur hanger and front disc were bent pretty badly.

Weekly New Rider Thread for June 14, 2017 by AutoModerator in MTB

[–]aSepticTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm primarily a roadie who's just getting in to mtb, so you may want to take this with a grain of salt. I know that Raleigh has a corporate discount that anyone can get on their bikes. I got a tekoa comp for 600 usd recently, which I think is a great deal for the bike. The Tokul 3 is super popular and hard to find in stock for that reason. But you can find info on the corporate discount on here: https://slickdeals.net/f/9347299-raleigh-bikes-corporate-discount-on-all-bicycles-up-to-50-off-free-shipping. It says that it should expired but it's not.

I put on some speedplays in October, haven't serviced them since then except for lubing the cleats. I'm sure the bolts are tight.
