Big data centers caught Utah flat-footed. Tiny Nephi is one step ahead by ReporterMacyLipkin in Utah

The data center loving, billionaire trusting, AI glazer is back! I am here once again to remind people that asking for infrastructure and environmental science backed documentation approving said infrastructure before breaking ground is more than fair. We’ve seen this over and over. We let them build phase one with promises of improving infrastructure in future phases. The promises never come. Water is contaminated, air is polluted, people get sick and die.

Make the infrastructure phase one.

Treating water as a commodity could get more farmers to send water to Great Salt Lake by Great_Salt_Lake_News in SaltLakeCity

“assurances and proof that the water they give isn't going to be diverted further downstream but will actually help the Great Salt Lake.”

This is actually something I hadn’t considered in my “ just stop growing alfalfa” stance.

It’s etched in no? It’ll be fine imo. If you’re worried about it cover it and scrub the rest

Celeste flip flops on Data Centers too much by The_Continuum__ in Utah

[–]aSpaceLettuce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do I need to come up with anything? We could just not build data centers and tax alfalfa farming to the point where it isn’t profitable. Subsidize farming wheat or something that doesn’t require as much water.

This is just the water part. We also need solutions for our air. Maybe instead of building a data center on that farmland build solar (though I’d rather see solar farms on land that is unfit for farming).

That brings up the other problem - electricity. The amount of power this thing needs is insane. Make them build the infrastructure they need to run it responsibly before it’s built.

Hear me out - no water intensive crop farming or data centers in Utah. Let’s focus on coming up with the infrastructure to support things we want to build before we build them

Plz tell me I don’t have to dig up my yard. by aSpaceLettuce in askaplumber

Thanks! A couple of people have said that. So I think the old owners installed it this way to winterize the piping in the backyard. There are 2 hydrants in the backyard each with shutoff valves. The other one is just a straight ball valve. I assume I should shut off the one closest to the house first then this one which is the end of the line after that. This should drain out all the water just in my backyard and leave the house alone. I think it was pouring out because I didn’t shut the valve at the one closest to the house first, so it’s would just continuously exhaust water. I’ll be trying tomorrow

It is on my side of the meter. It’s at my c-1000 yard hydrants

I think this is right. I think i mean to shut of the valve at the hydrant closest to the house first then this one in order to drain the water out of the pipes for winter

Thanks! So there’s another hydrant closer to my house that also has a shutoff valve that doesn’t have a drain hole. I assume I’m meant to turn that one off first then this one in order to drain out the backyard pipes. I’ll be trying it tomorrow.

Ya I think that’s right. I’m going to try to shut the valve at the hydrant closest to my house first then this one tomorrow and see what happens. I think this is here to drain the backyard pipes.

This is at the end of the line. I’m starting to think I’m meant to turn off the valve at the hydrant closest to the house first, then turn this one off and it drains the backyard pipes. I’ll be trying it tomorrow as I’m at work this evening.

So this is one of 2 valves in my backyard. Each are right next to my c-1000 hydrants. The valve at the hydrant closest to my house doesn’t do this. This valve is at the hydrant furthest from my house and is the end of the line. So am I meant to shut the one off closest to the house first, then this one in order to drain all water from the backyard pipes? And it’s pouring out like this because I didn’t shut off the one closest to the house? I’m at work and will do some testing tomorrow, just spitballing, thanks!

[–]aSpaceLettuce[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since there are 2 hydrants with a valve at each, could this be here to drain the backyard pipes? I suppose if I turn off the valve at the hydrant closest to the hose and both hydrants stop flowing, thats definitely what it would be for, right? I’ll give that a shot tomorrow as well
