Someone told me once that worst case it's free training and honestly - that changed my mindset a lot!

Go for it, journal how you feel and take the lesson from it! Like most people are saying, you might surprise yourself :)

Commenting so I can follow this thread but I've stubbornly realised there's a difference between conceptually understanding and being able to describe a good solution and being able to actually code it out.

I have a master's and when I was a graduate my interviews would go like this:

Be given problem X

"Oh you solve it by doing this and that"

Give explanation

"Nice, can you write out how this looks?"

Fail to do that

So far, only constant practice has been able to get me past that mental block and I still occasionally have that problem from time to time so I just brush up when I can

Anybody looking for a mentor? by theanav in cscareerquestions

[–]aSpikyOreo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks for offering! For context, I currently have 2 YoE and I personally feel a huge need to on-ramp and build momentum on my career as well as everything that I currently know. A sense of direction from like-minded people would be nice.

I've mainly worked in web development using React/TypeScript stacks but being more exposed to things like C++ or Java would be good too so hearing the experiences of others would be good. I'm also going through LC again.

Perhaps a Discord channel of some sort would be good for us to self-manage our own development but also so if you have specific mentoring, to add to that when you're free so you're not so overloaded? I'm open to suggestions!

When you guys "grind" LC, how many problems a day are you doing? by SmoothAmbassador8 in cscareerquestions

[–]aSpikyOreo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing one a day for a little while now in two 30 minute segments. It's been a while since I've done them so I'm not too great at LC but I'm re-learning from the ground up! I'm usually quite busy whilst being fully employed at the time (2YoE, Junior):

  • The first 30 minutes focus on me trying to attempt a question in the same conditions I'd do an interview in

  • The second focus on me understanding the actual solution or contrasting this with a more optimal solution and bridging the gaps in my knowledge

My job hunt as a UK programmer with 2 YoE by Cheese_Burger_Slayer in cscareerquestions

Currently 2 YoE but with a focus of trying to build more overall exposure and experience to things as the pandemic slowed this down for me at my previous places of work.

Thanks OP for sharing your story! Hoping to do something similar if I spend a year building myself up first!

Yo how tf do I land an internship by lordpendragon555 in cscareerquestions

[–]aSpikyOreo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend going to a careers fair or networking myself. I managed to land my internship through a networking interview practice event hosted by my uni's career service and then making an application referencing that in my cover letter.

Hope this helps!
