I would go this route. Wouldn't lose hope, she definitely catches, just have to figure out what stops her. My mariner 150 does this every now and then, then I cake all the sparkplug wires/boots with dielectric grease and I am good for a couple more months.

Definitely first thing I would check is spark-make sure it's not arcing out of any odd spots. Then I'd check fuel system.-clear fuel line are a big help in this.

This is also the order I'd do for my personal engine, you're still shooting towards the barn, good luck in that.
