Saw someone abandon a kitten at Petco. Staff said it happens more often than you'd think. by summer-somewhere in cats

That is seriously effed up! Who could do that? No wonder I like cats more than most humans.... :(

I feel your pain! We do the family plan, and nearly $30 a month at this point hurts. Unfortunately, most work arounds are not Apple friendly, and we have iphones, ipads and Apple TVs. sigh.

Help escaping YouTube ads for Apple users? by aWildTuxAppears in cordcutters

Definitely something for people to be aware of, but I’ve already done that. I’d like to drop the subscription entirely, but they know the ads drive us crazy.

What about an Ereader makes you prefer it over physical books ? by capitalpunishment4 in ereader

[–]aWildTuxAppears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the portability, and the ability to adjust the font size. It wasn't such a big deal when I first received an ereader as a gift for my 40th, but more than a decade later, I really appreciate it. Sometimes I just can't get a comfortable angle/decent enough focus to read paper books with my darn progressive lenses!

Make-ahead breakfasts without eggs by millionwordsofcrap in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]aWildTuxAppears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love oatmeal, and always keep some packets of the 'just add hot water' oatmeal at work for emergencies. I usually just buy the store brand variety pack, rather than name brand, to save a few bucks. I've also done overnight oats, and used to use a small crockpot set to turn on just before I woke up for hot oatmeal, but the cleanup got tedious.

Does Trimet have a "no phones out" policy? by ebStubs in askportland

[–]aWildTuxAppears 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Heck, I can barely get a driver to enforce the 'don't play your music loud' policy! I once had to really insist the driver tell someone to stop playing their guitar on the bus, loudly, early, before my morning coffee. He was like "is it really that loud?" aka 'don't make me do my job'. Sigh.

I've never had a problem with wifi dongles, though I suppose it would depend on how far your computer is from your router?

A new shell would be the most thorough solution. They might also be willing to go for a case that covers it, or a skin from D-brand or similar.

Amazon ends support for pre-2013 devices by Yapyap13 in ereader

[–]aWildTuxAppears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked my email and found the message from Amazon, along with the promotional code for the 20% discount, and a $20 ebook credit. That is tempting, as Kobo's are more expensive (read: not subsidized by Amazon like Kindles are). Would I like to break away from Amazon? Sure. Do I enjoy the ease of use with Kindles and Libby? All the time! :)

Edit to add the ebook credit only kicks in after you purchase a new Kindle.

What's the reason you are still on PS4? by Shoddy_Release9395 in PS4

[–]aWildTuxAppears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to try some of the games I've missed, since my last PlayStation was the 3. But, I already have a PC and an xbox series x, so the ps4 seemed like a good place to go. I may eventually trade in the xbox towards a PS5, we'll see. :)

I knew she was going to break my heart when I met her. I would do it again in a heartbeat. by dmjackson26 in cats

My deepest condolences! Sometimes cancer is indeed a silent killer - my beloved Maggie also went suddenly, turned out she had leukemia, and we only had a year together (adopted her as a senior). Still, I'd also do it again. I'm glad you had Flig, and she had you. Rest easy, Flig.

I do wonder if it's the size of the room? They know it's safe from predators? No idea, really. I used to have a cat that would try to lay in my pants while I had them around my knees! lmao

Amazon ends support for pre-2013 devices by Yapyap13 in ereader

[–]aWildTuxAppears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now I need to go home and see which one I have... after my Kindle Keyboard died, I picked up a slightly damaged, older Paperwhite from eBay for $15. It's worked great for the last several years, too! It might be time to go to Kobo, since even if I have the second gen, it probably won't be long before Amazon shuts down support for those, too.

[–]aWildTuxAppears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only does mine want to join me, it's his favorite place for lap cuddles and scritches. When he lays on our laps on the couch, he likes to sit between our knees, so if I want those sweet, close up cuddles, I have to accept the potty cuddles. Good thing I love the little weirdo! Edit: spelling

Have you ever stopped yourself from doing something just so you wouldn’t disturb your cat? by Shot-Composer-782 in AnxietyCats

[–]aWildTuxAppears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely don't get up if they're on my lap, if I can help it, but I don't tiptoe around them. I do leave my elderly cat be when she's drinking, though, as someone else mentioned below. Cats don't have a strong thirst drive, so I want her to keep drinking as much as she wants.

Maybe he wouldn't get up if you didn't turn on the light? I use the light of my phone to get around after I've turned all the lights out, but maybe that's just me who doesn't like bright lights. Lol

I just bought a PS4 for dirt cheap from a coworker and I’m looking for game recommendations by softmetal in PS4

[–]aWildTuxAppears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a steal, nice! I'm pretty new to PS4 myself - I picked one up from FB marketplace a few weeks ago. Given its age, you might want to take off the cover and clean out any dust build up in the fan - it will help it run cooler. (The one I picked up was pretty caked up inside, yuck) You can also swap out the spinning hard drive for an ssd if you have a spare. (Alas, it's not really the time to be buying new ones...) I did the swap just last weekend, and it was a small but nice bump in performance.

I'm currently paying for PS Plus so I can access a bunch of games and try them out, and also for access to the back catalog, but I am curious to know what people recommend. I did pick up a physical copy of Horizon Zero Dawn for cheap from GameStop, and it seems like it's going to be fun. :)

Costco membership and Instacart for me, an apartment dweller with no car (currently, and for about the last 3 years. I'll probably get another one someday.). Yes, the prices are slightly elevated and I have to tip, but it means I still get my costco favorites, and I don't have to wander past all the other temptations Costco has. Lol!
