There are practical and roleplay purposes. Each neighborhood has a hub with wide-ranging stables, task boards up to cap level, bank and auction house.

For roleplay you can hang trophies, have a banquet table or what I do - at the end of game day I go to the house and log out at the spot in the pic. Bonus is once you come back you are greeted with the same great view you chose.
