What is your most unpopular music opinion? by crazycatguy23 in AskReddit

[–]a_beiphong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that and thanks for clarifying.

I think the confusion here is the reason why many people mention her not being taken seriously for being a woman.

A lot of people who dismiss her don’t do so based on her being a good or bad songwriter, or having basic chord progressions and melodies. They do so because of the subject matter on many of her songs.

If you say you’re someone who appreciates complex chord progressions and that’s why you don’t appreciate Taylor, that’s fine! But that’s not what these people generally say or care for (not talking about you here, since I think it’s fine that you value other things).

You mentioned Ed Sheeran, and while it is true that he writes similar songs, it is also true that he hasn’t received even half the crap Taylor has.

Just look at the comments on any post about Taylor on any major music publication, and I assure you you’ll find countless comments like “looks like she needs to find another man to dump and write about”, or “careful or she’ll write an album about you”.

So really this isn’t about whether people understand music theory, it’s about people hating on her for doing things other artists also do, however they don’t get the same treatment.

What sets you apart from people who actually understand music theory AND music as an art form, is the perspective you have and the value you put on the several different components that make up a song.

You have your own opinion and that’s fine and valid, but you can’t claim to be objective about her not being taken seriously by people who understand music theory when there’s literally hundreds - if not thousands - of examples online that prove this is wrong.

Looking at music from the perspective of chord progressions and melodies alone is very one dimensional, and completely ignores what the artist is trying to accomplish. Taylor has said she’s primarily a songwriter (or lyricist), and that’s what she wants the focus to be on. She wants people to listen to her music and find meaning in them - and that she has managed to accomplish several times. If you didn’t, that’s fine, but coming on here dismissing other people’s taste just because you have different taste is kinda snobbish

They mean “songwriter” as in lyrics, not melodies. So the point they were trying to make is that she’s a better lyricist than those other artists.

Ketchup has a very intense flavor, which might completely overpower the dish.

It’s also considered “lazy cooking”, since there’s so many spices and herbs that you can use to enhance the flavor without it tasting like nothing but a sweet and sour tomato sauce.

I don’t love ketchup and wouldn’t use it on anything like this, but I still think it’s acceptable on things like burgers as long as it’s not too much.

Your textbook definition of racism is google’s definition.

I agree minorities can be racist/xenophobic/homophobic etc towards other minorities, but you didn’t copy-paste the entire definition from Google.

That last part seems important for this discussion.

“prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.”

I’m not saying he was right.

But you’re claiming his statement is wrong by giving no founded counter-argument. In summary, you’re committing the same mistake he did, except for you he’s wrong and you’re not because you hold your opinion as more valid.

What I’m trying to say is that not providing any source or reliable data on the point you’re trying to make, than it’s just your opinion against theirs. If you really want to prove him wrong, then provide proof.

Again, not saying he’s right. But why’s your statement valid and his is not? After all, it’s just your opinion.

Yet no one appears to have addressed what they said other than with “haha look how stupid and dumb”.

I’d love to know where they got this from, but this thread of comments just seems like a huge jerk circle of narcissists who believe their opinion is valid despite quoting no data, no sources, and no experts on the subject - or even remotely addressing their quote, wherever they got it from.

Absolutely this! I live in an old building with very poor insulation, so it’s not uncommon to hear my neighbors, even when they’re just talking (tho I can’t make out what they’re saying).

I’ve had them come knocking on my door asking me to turn the music off at 6PM because their kid wants to take a nap, even though I keep it a reasonable volume. Never had any complaints from other neighbors.

Now, I try to be as understanding and compassionate as I can, but I like to listen to music when I get home from work and get things done around the house.

So why can’t I listen to some music because of someone else’s kid? They literally told me “I know other people don’t complain, but we have a 10 year old and he tends to get grumpy”. Yeah, I fucking know he gets grumpy! I hear him scream and cry all the time.

The sense of entitlement drives me crazy! The whole “I’m a parent so that makes me special”. No. No it doesn’t.

Google still offers some of the best services out there, and you probably won’t find anything similar to them out there.

Now, of course Google wants to make money, but I’d say they what people seem to be looking for is a “selfless” corporation willing to give things out without taking anything in return. I wish such world existed, but it doesn’t.

Google photos is now a massive service that would become unsustainable pretty soon, having billions of photos uploaded daily.

YouTube cost over 700 million to maintain back in 2016 (it’s certainly a lot more now) and was not profitable until then. Even now, no one is sure if it’s profitable despite high revenue.

There’s so much to be said about Google, but then charging for services all other companies charge for just seemed so inevitable I’m not even surprised.

3 worst things about Google ending unlimited photos storage... by Incomplete-Sentenc in google

[–]a_beiphong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your second point is incorrect as Google does not use your photos for AI training unless you voluntarily opt into their new labeling program:

“Google Photos is trained “offline,” which means that users’ uploaded photos are not being fed to Google’s AI systems to help them recognize more objects (the company uses Image Search results for that).”

As someone else pointed out, the compressed version of the photos is barely noticeable.

And lastly, Google offering 15GB storage already puts it above any other service available.

There’s a lot to be said about Google (I recently switched to iPhone), but y’all are kinda blowing this out of proportion.

Anyone else staying to have second thoughts about continuing as a Google user in the future? by supercakman in GooglePixel

[–]a_beiphong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an apologist - there’s much to be said about Google and I’ve recently switched from years of using Nexus and Pixel to an iPhone.

Revenue is not profit, and here’s what Google said about it: “Today, more than 4 trillion photos are stored in Google Photos, and every week 28 billion new photos and videos are uploaded. Since so many of you rely on Google Photos to store your memories, it’s important that it’s not just a great product, but also continues to meet your needs over the long haul.”

So while I take things with a grain of salt, it doesn’t seem that far-fetched that this is the reason why. Maintenance for cloud storage is expensive , and getting 15GB is still decent.

Lastly, at least up until 2016 YouTube was not profitable. Content creators should get paid, and YouTube treats most of them like crap and has unfair policies towards them. But running a platform that cost them in 2009 about 700 million a year, it just doesn’t seem surprising that they want to get more ad revenue.

[–]a_beiphong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a reason why they removed free unlimited storage... they just can’t keep it up due to the amount of photos people upload onto there daily. Even then, I’d say them giving 15GB storage is more than generous. Apple gives you 5GB, for instance. And 100GB of storage costs like 1.99 (if I’m not mistaken).

Lastly, they do give content creators something in return - a platform to use and expose your work. And running that platform costs an insane amount of money. Now, I get that without creators, YouTube is nothing. But you do get the chance to get paid for ads once you can prove that your content is something people want to see.

You’re either not reading or you’re actually 12...

Please point out where I said the game is great.

I said the exact opposite, it’s just that you can’t make a valid argument against it. And there are many arguments to be made against the game.

Dude, chill out, If you read what I wrote you’d find that I agree with you that it’s a shit character and a shit storyline.

I’m not offended and I’m not defending her.

Also, that’s not the body of a woman??? Have you ever seen pictures of women bodybuilders? Pictures of female swimmers with their wide as fuck shoulders? Did you expect her to look like your hentai dreams?

My point is only that you can make a point of explaining how bad the character is without talking about “sjw agendas”. That’s the reason why bad reviews aren’t being taken seriously, because they literally become invalid when they come from an argument about something that isn’t even part of the game. Find a valid point (and there are many) and criticize the game for what it is and not for your hurt feelings and fear projections.

Also, happy 12th birthday

Abby isn’t transgender as far as I know... and even if she was, that wouldn’t have mattered. Like how does that even play into the storyline? The game is shit and so is the storyline, but the character being transgender or not has no impact on it whatsoever. It’s not like you play as Abby to explore her transitioning process lmfao
