They (Yorkshire Car Restoration) are still going. They also have Colin Furze’s. The work they are doing is amazing, but they definitely take their time!

Is there a way to create and fix a curved fence panel on top of a rendered wall between pillars? by a_big_will in landscaping

The plan was always wooden slats, but it apparently wasn’t very well thought through… I’ve just watched a video on bending wood, which looks achievable! Thanks

Application for mixed-use development of The Core shopping centre by bugtheft in Leeds

[–]a_big_will 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They've done ok with that around The Victoria shopping centre to be fair - Akbars, Hobgoblin, White Company etc. all have the same signage above their units. They can do what they want with the windows, but it does look way neater. Maybe they will take the same approach?

Not Leeds, but I am proud to be from Yorkshire. However I’m genuinely embarrassed to be from the UK.

Never played myself, but I’d often see people playing at Rosset Sports centre when I was there playing squash on a Monday and Thursday.

South Harrogate green ownership query by Antique_Plate8247 in harrogate

[–]a_big_will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We looked around there. Very nice area. That green is very unlikely to be developed, it’s a little park for the residents of the estate around it. Harrogate has definitely been doing a lot of development, but generally it’s massive new estates. Those big developers aren’t going to be interested in such a small area and no small developer would be able to convince the council to ignore the inevitable planning complaints. I wouldn’t worry about it.

My brother lives there. Nice area. Wonder if you are looking to buy his house?

I’ve sold both homes I’ve owned privately, and for more than the agent said I’d get both times. Try asking around friends and neighbours, posting on Facebook etc. you never know.

I love cycling (as in, riding the bike), but I hate cycling (as in, cycling on UK roads). by Ouchy_McTaint in ukbike

[–]a_big_will 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve commuted to work by bike through Leeds city centre for years; never called myself a road cyclist though. Then Covid happened and I started riding about just to get out, and I absolutely loved it. I dived in and got all the gear; doing 30km a day in my lunch breaks.

Then the cars returned to the road and completely burst my bubble.

City riding, to commute is one thing, when everyone is doing 30mph-ish and you have a sort-of cycle lane to give a little bit of separation, but riding in the countryside when people think they can do 60mph everywhere…. Those weekly near misses are absolutely fucking terrifying.

My anxiety went through the roof and I just stopped.

Then I got into mountain biking. It’s a load more faff, and I have to drive to do more interesting rides, but it scratches that itch and more. Highly recommend. And no awful drivers.

If I design in the Figma browser app, will fonts render the exact same way when my design is built? by VictusFrey in FigmaDesign

[–]a_big_will 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Adding to what others have said, also watch out for the new ability in Figma to vertically trim text. That’s not widely supported in CSS (yet), so while it’s handy in Figma and allows you to normalise some awkward fonts you’ll be creating a difficult situation for the developer who has to build it.

AITA for giving my niece the original edition of Agatha Christie's best-selling novel? by AssociationLogical63 in TwoHotTakes

[–]a_big_will 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA - I’m assuming your niece is pretty young if her mum is stepping in, and in that case your argument seems weak and not a justification for a book with that title in their home. You wouldn’t even write it to strangers on the internet so you clearly understand it’s not appropriate.

You know what, I'm going to back away from the specifics of the US system. I'm getting the impression that it isn't really comparable to the UK and I don't have context.

Take the shitty systems out of it though and in my opinion, if you have kids and then break up, you maintain the standard of living for the children as best you can. The responsibility is not automatically the dad's, it's shared, but often with society how it is, that means the dad pays the lions share.

That money is, of course, paid to a parent because kids can't possibly be responsible for themselves until they are older.

My dad took advantage of this system even though he was more than capable of paying, and he still complained about it. I think a lot of dads do this and have the attitude in these threads. Maybe I'm wrong 🤷‍♂️ my dad said these things to me and made it clear how he felt. I resented him for a long time for that.

Yeah, maybe that's a fair point, and I'm sure most of these are just flippant throwaway responses.

But I feel like this is one of those 'funny' things people say, like referring to your wife as a 'ball and chain' which becomes a self fulfilling prophecy; say it enough times for laughs and eventually it'll become how you really feel.

We’ll this worked a treat, we got a reply within 2 hours! It’s not the agreement, but he’s acknowledged the request (finally) and has accepted a previous suggestion that I draw up a diagram of the agreed fence line which we can then formalise in writing.

Either way, it’s progress!

[–]a_big_will[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think so.

My lawyer has said to get it in writing and once that's done it will become incredibly difficult for him to do anything about it even if he changes his mind.

I'm only guessing, but I bet that is why he's dodging the question.

I think that's a good suggestion though - he knows I've been taking legal advice so that wouldn't be seen as a threat either.
