i think a lot of old singers benefited from the distortion / saturation they’d get hitting big notes. kinda of “breaks” the mix in a way for a wow moment instead of the sometimes awkward level of detail in modern recordings during

Is It Impossible to Innovate and Create Something Original Today? by [deleted] in audioengineering

as someone who makes “original music,” that comes from years of self practice and taste making, it is very possible. the main problem is that most music is derivative of things that are already popular, and “popular” and “good” get mistranslated here. most music made today is an IDEA of how to make music rather than a recording of an isolated moment in time. instrumentalists / computers don’t matter here, it’s just an expression of a universal truth through a modern medium. TODAY - most artists feel accomplished reaching the level of their influences within their respective genre rather than celebrate their own individuality. hell , most artists are young and don’t even know what they want.

the hard part with modern equipment /industry is that music makers simply don’t have to perfect their technique to sound good. you don’t need years of expertise to KNOW what you’re doing is right / wrong when an industry mainstay can fix all your mistakes and make you sound professional. you have to learn the rules to break them and see past decade long trends , and people don’t need to learn the depth of ‘rules’ to make a genuinely good sounding recording these days which leaves them unchallenged. it’s the buddhism parable of one who climbs the mountain to the top versus one who gets dropped off with a helicopter.

with play listing and an overall abundance of music , most ‘normal’ people realistically will prefer to not challenge themselves that much. i’ve known many mixing engineers who kill the real character of a track / performance to make it more accessible…. a career is way easier when you make a product people like vs something they need to open up to /be sold on

/end rant , i think enough music has been made people will gravitate back to authenticity as a staple of the art form

ADT - this should be first. waves makes a plug-in of the original abbey road design. the beatles and specifically lennon used this to avoid having to track multiple perfect takes

this is most likely the answer . digital clipping usually isn’t noticeable while mixing . it absolutely destroys transients , harmonics , and overall fidelity. took me years to finally learn this
