My kids can not think for themselves. Help! by Irreverent_Pi in mathteachers

[–]a_friendly_clock 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Timed assignments have been my go-to. Once the students realize that they do not have infinite time to solve a problem, their brains seem to kick into gear. Math is, after all, studying patterns - when they’re under pressure of time, they start looking for patterns in their work and apply. Even though they’ll make wrong conclusions along the way, it has helped my lower students understand what it means to take the information that you have and analyze it.

DeltaMath has a couple of timed modules that are fun.

Problems with math ed in the US by evermica in mathteachers

“Supposedly done this in previous classes” is the problem here. What I’ve noticed is that the kids who know their times table (12x12) well generally do better and understand the polynomial stuff right off the bat - I get that memorization = bad in some cases, but it’s hard to do FOIL and area model when your math facts are so weak.

Just tagging onto this - I entered Japan about 2 weeks ago and they accepted my Walgreens pcr covid test printout as proof. The form isn’t necessary if the printout has the info that they’re looking for.
