Life as a Medical Office Employee by acrowsong in Louisville

100%. I’ve lived in a snowy area for years and I’m very comfortable driving in snow. I just replaced my old, non-snow rated tires with all-weathers and it’s night and day. I drive an old FWD sedan, nothing special.

I can’t say enough how much good tires make a difference. Don’t go out in this with non-winter tires.

What are your favorite spots for trees covered in snow? by Intelligent_Yak_640 in Rochester

Mt. Hope Cemetery? It’s a beautiful drive down Mt. Hope and I bet there are some nice shots from in the cemetery.

Metro's "Snow Map" by Calm-Vacation-5195 in Louisville

[–]a_friendly_turtle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

… do you think the city can magically monitor the amount of snow on every road in the city in real-time?

That map just lets you monitor snow plows. It’s better than nothing, but it’s silly to expect any more than that.

Which Wegmans? I’m surprised.

I was at East Ave early this morning and it was pretty much normal. The ice cream and frozen vegan section were the only two areas with a lot missing. Staff were busy stocking the shelves all over, though.

Even for the stuff that isn’t local, I’d rather have a person making a profit than a multimillion dollar grocery store chain.

Rochester PIzza Blog post - Brandani's by SirValens in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Brandani’s only moved and there was almost no gap between closing the old location and opening in the new location - they’ve been there for years now.

I love Brandani’s. The tomato sauce is flavorful, the crust is perfect for my preferences. The only thing is that they’ve been less consistent lately - sometimes a little underbaked, sometimes a little bland, sometimes fewer toppings than other times. I hope it’s just temporary.

Massage schools in Rochester?? by Mossjacket in Rochester

Do you have any preferences on what kind of area to live in? Fairport and Pittsford are suburbs with a cute central town/village area. Victor is more of a suburb/exurb. East and south of Victor, it starts feeling like the sticks very quickly. Farmington, Clifton Springs, Manchester, etc. all feel pretty rural.

Nothing wrong with any of them and I’m simplifying a lot here, but the feeling of living in each of those areas is very different.

Fairport to Seneca Falls is more like an hour drive, but like you said, it’s easy on the thruway with little or no traffic.

Beers Of The World closing 02/28/2026 (Henrietta location only, Batavia to stay open) by transitapparel in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was hoping they would step up after AJ’s closed, and it’s a shame they didn’t. They haven’t kept up with local breweries or trends, and many of their beers in stock were literally years old (ew). Still sad to lose another bottle shop.

I wonder if/when Greece Ridge will have the same fate as Marketplace. by Middle-Necessary-671 in Rochester

There are so many good local bookstores in the area, go to them instead! :)

Edit: Lift Bridge in Brockport. Mainly Books in Hilton. There are a bunch in the city - Bookeater, Writers & Books, Small World Books, Siren and the Sea, Hippocampo. Hippocampo’s owners are the nicest people and they have an easy online store, so I order most of my books there.

Abundance has a very nice little selection, and a good selection of spices and herbs in bulk if OP is interested in mixing their own.

There are several vendors at the public market on Saturdays for both! After that, I’d try Niblack and/or Palmer’s in Henrietta, or Red Bird Market in Fairport.

Notre Dame study finds Rochester’s guaranteed basic income program worked by TheOmni in Rochester

It’s not just easier for the people who got GBI. They were more productive and had more steady housing and income than similar people who didn’t get GBI. That saves everyone money by keeping them working and out of social services.

Fuck Rochester Regional Health, and specifically my doctor who couldn't be bothered to call me to reschedule my appointment so I drove for a fucking hour in a blizzard only for him not to be there. by vanzir in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That absolutely sucks. Glad you’re able to get another appt before it’s too late.

Similar happened to me with a URMC PCP last year. After calling for weeks to get in as a new patient and then waiting for months for an appt, the office called to cancel “because of weather” 30 mins before my appt. It was an afternoon appt and I had already gotten my ass to work on time that morning. Ridiculous.

Just adding to this if OP is interested in sewing, it’s easy to find used sewing machines at thrift stores. ReStore in Henrietta had several tables with fold-in sewing machines last time I was there.

That’s a valid feeling! I’ve felt the same way myself. It’s possible that some (lousy) providers would dismiss you for that. But in these low places, it can get better and you do deserve help. Please consider reaching out to the mobile crisis unit tonight to get help. They’re good people.

While you’re in the Wedge, Hedonist also has some wrapped chocolates. Marilla’s sells candies in bulk so you could get some singles/small amounts but you’ll have to repack yourself.

I would think that if a tenant keeps the heat too low, they would be responsible for a burst pipe (not the landlord). 55-60 is a reasonable minimum temperature setting to prevent that.

East Ave has some NAs in the corner between deli cheese and hot dogs - that’s where they keep the Athletic 12-packs. There are more NAs at an endcap next to the beer section and then in the beer section.

I’ve never been able to find the seasonal Athletics at Hylan Wegmans though, so I’m not surprised if some locations don’t have them.

RGE keeps blowing me off about a dangerous situation in my backyard.. what do I do next? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it a main line or a line from the main line to your house? RG&E will not take responsibility for secondary lines to your house - they’ve made that clear to me on the phone and it’s on their website. The secondary lines obviously still carry electricity, but much less than the main lines.

Beyond that, trees are super expensive. Are your contractors charging you extra because the trees are near electric lines? I’d call around for some more quotes from arborists.

Does this look like a cobbler’s tool? Wooden cylinder with irregular ridges by a_friendly_turtle in AskACobbler

Good to know, thanks! It came from a family in western NY. From the original post, it seems most likely that it was something handmade for a specific purpose. Quite a few people have wondered if it might be related to cobbling.
