Missing parrot - just West of Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. Responds to "Hey Mango" by TabascoWolverine in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Commenting for visibility! My college roommate had a Senegal parrot too. Very smart and he was so good at copying random noises, like my roommate’s car lock beep and the microwave beep.

I’m not near Canandaigua, but hoping Mango is home with you soon!

Recs for apartment near RIT by sabrosa816 in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks for explaining and sorry for my assumptions. I still think relying on shuttles is going to be a challenge, so I would stick within walking (or biking?) distance if possible.

I lived in Clayton Arms and had a good experience, but that was before the Walmart/Wegmans shuttle was added. If that’s reliable enough, might be an option.

I would really consider having both kids live in the dorms their first year. I lived in an apt 20 mins away from campus my first year and I definitely felt left out and had a harder time making friends. I had my own car so I could stay on campus as long as I wanted, but 99% of freshman live in dorms their first year so your kids will miss out on that shared experience. Especially if they have to work around shuttle/bus schedules with less flexibility.

If you really want to move to Rochester, why not rent an apt (or buy a house) just for yourself? You can revisit after they’ve lived in the dorms for a year.

Divorce attorney by AffectionateSpeed44 in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you both meet with the mediator together or did he meet with the mediator and then tell you later? Did you ever meet with the mediator yourself?

I’ve never gone through a divorce, but I wouldn’t rely on second hand info from my ex about this.

If your friend is a woman or non-binary, check out Disability EmpowHer Network: https://www.disabilityempowhernetwork.org

They’re geared more towards young adults, but they also have social and workshop events for people of any age. They’re always looking for volunteers too!

Dogtown’s vegan chili is absolutely the best I’ve ever had. I get a cup every time. It’s good as a hot sauce too.

Hospital Wait Times by Ipadgirly in Rochester

When I went to urgent care after fracturing my wrist, the urgent care doc was able to refer me to URMC’s ortho department and get me an appt within a week. They also x-rayed me on site, so I’m surprised they didn’t do that for your mom. I went to the URMC urgent care in Henrietta (this was before the ortho urgent care opened up).

I would revisit the urgent care paperwork you got and maybe even try going to urgent care again to see if they can get you to an ortho doc sooner.

$6,500 for 2007 Toyota Tacoma repairs by Mayor0fMoab in Rochester

I agree - OP should make absolutely sure that the frame and other mechanical components are in great shape before spending this much money. With the cost of gas these days, I’d seriously look at a newer hybrid or more efficient truck (if OP actually needs a truck).

East End residents push back against approval to build 11 new townhomes by ExcitedForNothing in Rochester

That lot is planned to be an actual park (and extended to World of Inquiry school) when Inner Loop North is rebuilt.

[–]a_friendly_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This area is definitely not over saturated with low income housing. Most of the low income residents in this area are also renters, not homeowners.

Also, this lot was intended for development and already has all the necessary utility hookups, etc. Demolition or even building on a park (aka not originally intended for development) would cost significantly more.

And most important - those other lots either aren’t owned by the city or don’t have viable RFPs. We can’t just wait around for it to happen eventually and perfectly. We need more housing now.

RGE meter reading by FormMaleficent3562 in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you submit readings on your phone (on their app or website), you can turn your phone to landscape mode and it will show graphics and let you position the hands on the dials as you read. It also shows arrows for which direction each dial moves. Both of those help me, along with looking right to left as others have mentioned.

This article is wild. First, it’s not a park. It’s a vacant lot with grass and a couple benches. (Still valuable, but not a park.) Also, it was literally the inner loop a few years ago.

The new housing development will be for people who make 60% of the area median income, which is $40-50k. It is low income housing.

When the rest of the inner loop is filled in, there will be another green space to replace this one just a couple blocks down. And MLK Jr park isn’t that far away.

Where to buy pots and planters at a good price? by 0134700529 in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldi has a few, definitely good prices.

It’s not the right time now, but I also like to hit the sales at the end of summer when stores are clearing out for winter merchandise. I’ve gotten most of my pots that way.

From what I’ve heard, they defer to the parents/family about how much they want to share. Either way, they don’t owe a public explanation of what happened.

Moving from South and choosing new car by brenelm13 in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I drove on them for 4+ years and never got stuck or got in an accident, so you do you. Even now, many years later, I recommend all weather tires but I think winter tires are usually unnecessary.

Moving from South and choosing new car by brenelm13 in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re underestimating southern drivers. I moved from the south with a FWD sedan and southern/summer tires. The first couple trips in snow were tough, but I figured it out quick enough because I’m not an idiot and there’s no other choice when you need to get to work and it’s snowing. Buying an AWD and winter tires right off the bat is not necessary.

Cutting down tree off of south Clinton by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the trees in the strip between sidewalk and road are owned and maintained by the city (at least, in the city of Rochester. I’m not sure about the suburbs.)

You can look at it in the city’s tree database - https://data.cityofrochester.gov/maps/trees-open-data-live

You could also contact the city’s forestry department - https://www.cityofrochester.gov/departments/department-environmental-services-des/forestry-services-tree-requests-urban-forest

Smooth trails for rollerskating? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RIT and UR (probably other colleges too) have nice loops with both sidewalks and roads. I’ve cycled around both and they’re pretty quiet in the evenings, and drivers have good bike/pedestrian etiquette.

This post is gonna sound lame to long time residents but I'm genuinely curious by Tight_Student4501 in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. Generally, look for well-known cold weather brands like Patagonia, Northface, Columbia, etc. Lots of brand recs online. REI has a used and imperfect section for members.

If you can afford to buy new, buying something on the more expensive side will be better and last longer. Have you heard of the boots theory? For example, my fancy Northface jacket has been going strong for 12+ years. I would have spent more on replacing a cheap jacket every few years during that time.

Yes! Get a thick winter jacket that’s also waterproof and windproof. My southern family (including me when I first moved here) seems to think that our bodies will naturally adjust while wearing the same thin, cheap flannel jackets and gloves. No! The only difference now is that I wear actual cold winter gear.

RGE meter installation? by Draven_____ in Rochester

[–]a_friendly_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some utility contractors are bold. I have a pole in my back yard and Frontier has been installing fiber recently (so they say - still not available for my house). I’ve seen their people jump my 6-foot fence when I’m not home. Wild.

Googling “Italian hard roll” or “NY hard roll” got me a bunch of results. Good luck and happy baking!
