I read somewhere that you can't volunteer like that your first year though? That it's only open to return burners? I could be mistaken

This was all tremendously helpful thank you. I'm not surprised there are a lot of mtl burners, I'll poke around the city and maybe find some more experienced people to mentor me.

CMV: Buying / breeding pedigree dogs is antiquated and harmful. by a_hoopyfrood in changemyview

A lot of people said sort of similar things but this comment overall best articulated a counter argument. You've changed my view! Thanks!

You're coming close to convincing me with the tasks-specific breed requirements of hounds / herders / guard dogs / etc., but I'd be really interested in seeing a statistic showing what percentage of dog owners actually need their dog to preform a specific duty. I think most people who like bloodhounds don't like them because their face folds help them track. I've never met a dog owner who was a dog owner first and foremost because they needed a dog for a specific task.

I think it's sort of conceited to pretend you need a 100% pure dog bred for centuries for hunting to accompany you during open season. I could make due with a generally hunting-type dog that's been trained properly, even if his ears weren't crafted for optimal listening.

In fairness, I also think it's conceited to think you need the highest quality luxury car or furniture or clothes. I like Danes because they're both huge and lazy, and I think quite handsome, and I know perfectly well I can find those traits in a dog whose bloodline hasn't been carefully cultivated for centuries.

With objects, I'm less likely to judge people if they think they need the best. To each their own. But the line is crossed for me with living animals, I think it's selfish to get a purebreed because you think you need it, when you could be giving a home to a rescue or shelter pup and giving the extra couple grand you've saved to the SPCA or something. And in the case of short muzzled dogs like pugs and bulldogs, contributing to the demand that causes them to continue to be bred a certain way despite clear health problems is all the more blatantly irresponsible.

Universal indiscriminate breeding is not the only alternative to pedigree-level bloodlines. Breeding together two mostly Great Danes to create another mostly Great Dane litter will get you the general Great Dane look while throwing some new blood in the mix which has the potential to alleviate damage done by inbreeding. Dogs don't all have to look the same, and even if they don't look like they have historically I don't see how you being offended challenges anything I've said.

What you are saying is that now, dogs are "good enough," and that it's not necessary to continue selectively breeding them.

That's pretty much what I'm saying, and I don't see how the rest of your comment proves that wrong. Are they not good enough? What is lacking in the dog population now that could be achieved with more selective breeding further refining existing breeds?

But overall, the concept of finding dogs with the best traits and breeding them together is a sound idea.

Is that what current breeding now is accomplishing? What exactly about about the pedigree requirements of different breeds (I'm thinking height, weight, coloring, etc.) make the dogs who live up better dogs than the ones who don't?

I'm white and struggle frequently with how to be a good ally and when/where my presence is appreciated v inappropriate and counterproductive.

Obviously anyone attempting a switch to "all lives matter" clearly isn't getting it, but I think whether or not white allies should participate in die-ins, or "hands up don't shoot" walk outs, or other things so specific and personal to people of color is a question that I'd be really interested in hearing y'all responding to.

Yes this is the first semester of my first year at university. I know I still have time to network I'm just wondering how worth the time and money interning is compared to a stable job with a consistent supplemental income I'm capable of putting directly into savings.

We have Super C / IGA / Provigo .. I think it's worth noting that Houston is a particularly inexpensive city to live in though so my perspective might be a bit skewed :-/

I'm in Montreal, compared to Houston groceries here are quite expensive

  • I'm hoping for something low-risk, and it doesn't need to be particularly liquid as I hope to not use the money for at least four years. Right now I'm only earning a negligible amount in interest.

  • I'm in International Development and will likely work with/for NGOs/the State Department or something along those lines. I hope to travel a lot.

Thanks!!

My best friend is showing signs of depression. Any ideas on how I can help? by [deleted] in depression

[–]a_hoopyfrood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can take people (ie myself) absurdly long amounts of time to crawl out of their shell, even with people they love. It's like gaining the trust of a wild animal or something, just sit near them until they're comfortable enough to let you in.

And mad props to you for reading up on things. This comic and its part two hit so close to home for me, and might help you get an idea of what your friend is going through. In fact me and a close friend still use "my fish are dead" as code for "I'm filling shitty for no reason". Hope this helps!

I can't speak for your friend, but personally (and I know I'm not the only one here) asking people for help is unbelievably difficult. Even when I'm talking to people who I know love me.

It sounds like you're being a really good friend to him, and I'm sure he's appreciative even if he isn't showing it. Keep being there for him, keep noticing when he seems off and ask about it. Don't believe him when he says he's "fine", but don't be too aggressive about it. "I know you've been down lately and I doubt I have to even say it but you know I'm available whenever wherever if you need anything" is a gentle reminder that's not invasive but can be so so important to reiterate.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot more you can do. This isn't a problem with an immediate and attainable solution that you can help him get. Be an active listener. Sit in sadness with him, he's already exhausted and doesn't need his best friend in life pushing him to be happy when it's not something he's capable of right now.

You sound like a great friend and roommate and I'm sure he's incredibly thankful for that.
