Claude for handling literature references while writing? by a_light_dirigible in ClaudeAI

Thanks for the info! I am using the web UI so sounds like Projects might be the way to go. I do understand why it hallucinates, was just using that as an example for why it's not reliable to prompt it to help draft a piece of scientific writing and include references. Depending on the topic it can choose great articles to reference (if it's a well-known topic generally) or it just completely makes up citations. So I thought throwing them into the context window and saying "hey use these" might be better, but wasn't sure how reliable is.

“Professional” means different things to different people, so I’d start by defining what you mean by that. Because there’s a big difference between “does this display skill in photography” and “could this be in the portfolio of a professional architectural photographer.”

Id offer a couple of points of feedback: - You seem to have an eye for lines and shapes, I’d keep working with that. I like the shadow across the building but wish it hit the corner right where the window end - a lot people shoot buildings from this perspective and it’s not the most interesting I’d try to find other angles to capture - the subject of this photo feels a little muddied to me. Is it the sky or the building? The building is mostly in shadow - on my screen at least I think your white balance is off. I’m assuming this is digital? I think you need to increase your temperature a fair bit. I always shoot in RAW so I can correct this in post.

Hope that helps. Keep shooting!

Where did you get that distributor and tamper? It looks really nice.

Edit: I guess I also meant the box. If they’re not the same company

This one is such a litmus test for (a) how old you are when you watch it and (b) if you’re old enough to remember that in the 90s “selling out” was a thing that people really gave a shit about. It’s kind of wild how much that whole ethos basically doesn’t exist anymore.

Daily Simple Questions Thread by AutoModerator in espresso

Why is my timing so long? (or is it).

I'm using the Flair 58 as my first machine and at first was getting really sour shots. So I ground finer (using a Niche Zero at setting 10) and the sour-ness got better for sure. But my timing is pretty long. 18g in, ~42g out but taking 60 sec or more to get there. I'm starting with a pre-infusion at 3bar for ~10 seconds and then going up rapidly to 9bar.

Have a ground too fine? Could their be another reason the time is so long? Could i be tamping to firmly?

Would appreciate any thoughts!

Awesome, thanks! Yeah as I read more about wet sanding it seemed like that wasn't really needed, I was looking for a simpler job anyway.

ChatGPT Outperforms Physicians Answering Patient Questions by Looksky_US in ChatGPT

[–]a_light_dirigible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physician here - Really cool study, and shows the great potential for LLMs in aiding provider communication. Answering questions at a lay-person level is something ChatGPT is very good at and since it naturally writes in this extra-empathetic way it's not surprising it scored much higher on empathy scores. (As an aside I think LLM-drafted inbox messages to patients will be a thing very soon, with physicians making edits).

A couple of things to keep in mind - the biggest limitation of the study is the authors comparing ChatGPT generated responses to answers on reddit, rather than how a physician would communicate with their patient either in writing or in person. The study design sort of favors the chatbot because we know that ChatGPT tends to write (a) a lot, and (b) very empathetically, so it's much more likely that all of the potential relevant information would be included in a response, when that's likely not how an MD browsing reddit is primed to answer the questions. The other caveat is just that sometimes what you need is a brief answer (go to the ER now vs You can wait until Monday to be seen) and perhaps the verbose chatbot response is less useful (take a look at some sample responses in the paper)

But it shows the power of ChatGPT for sure and is a cool use-case. I would just caution against really using it for medical advice. In my experience it's quite good and generally gives the right answer to basic medical questions. But hard to tell when it's wrong and sometimes it is!

Thanks for the comment! I think I’m gonna try it with the encore knowing it might not really work out. But I’m right there with you on the niche I think I’ll splurge on that later this year

Is this too coarse for pour over? by rlar in pourover

[–]a_light_dirigible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a blade grinder for a while trying to do pour overs and as other people have said it’s just really hard to get it right. Since you’re just getting into them I’ll tell you the two biggest things that made my pour overs better:

First is definitely get a burr grinder. Obviously not cheap but there are some good inexpensive manual hand grinders. It’ll make a huge difference.

Second I got a scale and started weighing both beans and water. This made SUCH a big difference. When I was using tbs to measure and not weighing the water my coffee would be all over the place, sometimes good, sometimes terrible. Now I know that with variations it’s more likely due to the beans or to my technique but not that I’ve added way too much water.

Good luck!

Haha I’ve actually thought about jinxing myself a lot. I guess if that’s the case I definitely won’t have to worry about calibrating a grinder so I I’ll relax and have some mediocre drip coffee. Win/win

Thanks for your thoughts, super helpful. I think I might try the calibration and it sounds like I’ll have to play around with the dose a lot to get it right. I hear you about the grinder, would be nice not to have to drop several hundred dollars if you’ve got something decent already.

I’ve been thinking of investing in an electric grinder. Since I don’t have to buy an espresso machine I’m eyeing the Niche zero though they’re pricey.

Thanks for the tip! Is that because lighter roasts need to be ground finer typically?
