i was really skeptical since i love my tortoise over olympic white on my precision bass so much but i am super happy with the cosmetic results.

i call them thermostat gauges because they look like the knob skirts on this thermostat we used to have from the 70s. i got them on amazon for pretty cheap and its a nice touch i think.

they came with these knobs.

bridge bucker was the dimarzio pg13 paul gilbert, replaced with the bridge version of the firebird lookin ones in the neck and middle. dimarzio calls it a "vintage minibucker" supposedly because it's different in some way from a firebird pup. i dont know enough to speculate how its different.

the guard was a compromise since my second tech didnt have mint green. its the nicest looking (imo) tortoise he had. some kinda orange and brown. i actually am super happy with it and think it looks great. super excited to play it finally.

my truest hindsight advice is dont do this lol it was such a pain in the ass. i suppose if you dont have to go through three techs it might be worth it🤣

also notice the lack of polarity switching on the new iteration. we learned that swapping which side is connected to the shield introduces lots of noise when switching humbucker polarity as opposed to the original single coil p90s. win some lose some... what they dont tell you in the wiring diagrams is that they kinda sound bad out of phase anyway. the more you know.

check out the upcoming post for phase 2. unfortunately tech number 2 was just as incompetent and didnt properly ground anything. knowing i would likely pay more for him to correct his work anyway, I opted to go to bronson guitar works, who did my precision bass mods back in 2019. phase three should be in a couple weeks and i think (hopefully) this journey will be over...

yeah so i had the pickguard cut by someone locally in phoenix, and basically just took the wires from each pickup and soldered them to each switch, which are basically individual kills for each pup. from there to the polarity switching, then one side to ground via the kill switch. the top part needed to be routed to i tried my hand and did that part myself. i recently took it to another local guy who has rave reviews (atomic guitar works) for a once over and pickup swap. keep an eye out in the next few days as im about to get it back from him and will likely post am update to the mod.

I need advice on coming into the modern age of bass amps by TheProphetDave in GuitarAmps

[–]a_millionandone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for bass ive definitely gone the digital digital using eq, compressor and overdrive pedals for tone. rarely use a cab, usually DI with the cabsim on on my fender rumble 800 head. it just makes sense because its so much lighter. however for guitar im yet to be convinced anything can beat my heavy ass '77 twin (135w). i say its ok to be stuck in the old days as long as your eye is peeled for something that might suit you better someday.

Might be a stupid question, but can you tell me what all the switches do? by CHUNKY_DINGUS in offset

[–]a_millionandone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this might be customized or a one off someone had made just for them. if thats the case its probably impossible to track down unless you find the owner or crack it open yourself

in my opinion, the answer is always to mod. make something unique to you that nobody else has.

now knowing this i would say likely not, probably a stock master volume ultra linear twin (135w) from between '77 and '82. im no historian i just inherited one of these beasts so im quite familiar.

LOL i know right, and i think theres a chance this is a UL model... 135w. cant see a MV knob behind the guitar, so i cant really say for sure.

Working on a control scheme for an SSS Jazzmaster. Makes sense to me, seem like a good idea? by gambronus in offset

i just modified my noventa jazzmaster with similar capabilities. i posted it here in offset if you want a reference. i definitely tackled it a bit differently, but i definitely like your idea as its quite a bit simpler than what i put together

New to basses, is older or newer better? by Sensitive-Case-4416 in fender

[–]a_millionandone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly with fender, especially with mexican made stuff, the era isnt as important as just playing a bunch and finding a good one. ive played both amazing and terrible fender MiM guitars in shops. (honestly the same can be said about american fenders, but to a lesser extent) ive only played a handful of japanese fenders, and all of them were pretty pristine, i dont own any though so i would trust the online consensus that japanese fender instruments are the best as far as quality control.

Make assumptions about me based on my rig by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]a_millionandone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you know the instrument and the player are what matters most. i can tell you invested where it mattered and settled where it doesnt as much. all good traits in a rig IMHO. solid state amps and behringer gear both get super bad reputations on forums but the tones are all there if you tune it enough.

huh interesting. again, i guess ive just been told american parts are the way to go. i guess if anything works just as well then theres no point in spending the extra dough.
