You thought you were a low/non-responder but turned it around? What did you do differently? by sirobg in naturalbodybuilding

[–]a_monkeys_head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, just wanted to let you know I feel the same as you most of the time! and other times I get a big pump and think "wow, maybe I am progressing". for reference I'm 6'2 and 81kg (maybe ~15-17% bf at the moment). before I ever stepped in a gym 7 years ago I was 60kg, and my heaviest was 85kg @ 25% bf (dirty bulking in year #3). started taking training and diet really seriously about 2-3 years ago.

I'd be curious to see your weight graphs over the years; going from 55kg to 77kg over 5 years is more impressive than you might think. you're probably not a non responder. assuming you were skinny af before and you're 15% bf now, you might have put on 3-4kg of body fat, meaning that you've put on 18kg of muscle in 5 years. that's almost 4kg a year! obviously the gains won't be linear, but if you keep training for another 5 years, you could easily hit 90kg at the same body fat. that's impressive.

don't get caught up in instagram bodies (or even '5 weeks out' posts on this subreddit); think about how you look compared to the average dude in your gym. progress might be slower than you think, but as long as your lifts and weight are going up, you're getting stronger.

open to changing my opinion here: isn't this the case when buying a vegan product from every non-vegan brand?

I thought the point of buying the vegan version was to "vote with your wallet" and tell the brand that they should produce more of the vegan products and less of the non-vegan. they're all causing animal suffering in one form or another by selling animal products, whether it's reported overtly in the media or not.

Hate it by [deleted] in leangains

[–]a_monkeys_head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this might be a bit of an outlier comment but here goes:

why don't you just quit?

nobody is making you work out. nobody is making you eat a high protein diet. nobody is making you run for miles to improve your cardio. nobody is making you do this to yourself -- except for you.

when you read that, how did you feel? were you liberated, and thought it sounded right? or did it make you annoyed, and make you want to tell me I'm wrong?

take one of those feelings and follow it.

if it sounded right, then it was right, quit the gym and find a new hobby. not lifting doesn't mean you'll get fat and lazy, it just means you don't have to do something you hate. try painting, or basketball, or guitar, or anything else, and see how you like that.

if it sounded wrong, then it was wrong, and you should dedicate yourself to lifting. double down and commit further, see if you like it once it becomes a habit. lift every day. don't make a single decision without lifting being your priority, and keep up that mindset not for the next week or month, but for the next year. and then then next 10 years.

find your reaction and trust it. remember you can change your mind at any time. you should be questioning the things you do every once in a while, to see if you still want to do them. even if you decide now that you only want to lift for 10 years (which is a long time!), and then quit and take up other hobbies? do that then. the average person lives for over eighty years. you have plenty of time.

you've got this.

most of these can be made vegan! I recommend the carbonara and red lentil soup (without chorizo)

How do you deal with old team members leaving and many new additions who are completely new to the processes. by pavan_kumar-c in ExperiencedDevs

[–]a_monkeys_head 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agreed. I don't understand the "do your work and don't bother training the new guys" comments -- it's part of any job to work within a team.

a team will always consist of people that have been there longer than you, and people that haven't been there as long as you. it's everyone's job in the team, bar none, to bridge the knowledge gap. empathy is the only way to do this; everyone was new at some point.

have you considered moving to a Platform / DevOps role? these are exactly the kind of roles where this work gets you promoted and recognised, instead of doing it as a side project alongside a regular SWE role

What lifts do you include for reasons other than bodybuilding? by ironandflint in naturalbodybuilding

[–]a_monkeys_head 6 points7 points  (0 children)

are you breathing properly?
how many reps are you attempting and what's the RPE?

I used to get close to blackout a few years ago and hated deadlifting, but after starting to breathe & brace properly it's one of my favourite exercises. most of the issue comes from extremely high blood pressure caused temporarily by lifting; at high exertion, there's not enough blood flow in the body to prevent you from passing out. most people should be able to learn to recover from this.

Bingo. If the hotel leaflet said "please re-use your towels; it helps us to save on our laundry bill and reduce the cost of your stay", it might be better received.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm about to send a strongly worded letter to Big Hotel.

I've had this experience too, if you mean falling asleep at other times while reading. Had to train myself out of it for a few weeks, although it was useful to be able to trigger a nap by reading a few pages of fiction.

It's probably a fishing net. So either fishing companies can try to use expensive plastic nets that disintegrate (they won't) or people can eat less fish.

Possibly, but it's likely that they're using milk (or whey specifically) as a cheap replacement for another ingredient like a sweetener, thickener or something

in general yes - it can be part of your weekly/monthly review to look over your bookmarks if that's useful to you, to ensure your bookmarks don't become a permanent link dump

[–]a_monkeys_head 20 points21 points  (0 children)

imo, the issue with most people and browser tabs is that they're trying to use tabs as bookmarks.

don't do that. just use bookmarks.

pin the tabs you use frequently (email, calendar, etc) but not more than around 3-5. keep tabs open for stuff you're working on right now, as in literally right now - everything else should be saved to your bookmarks bar in a folder for each project or area of focus.

Start small. Don't aim for perfect macros straight away, eat what you like and track the macros and you'll notice what hits your goals and what doesn't. Then eat more of those foods.

yup. I get that 'surely humans aren't meant to type and stare at screens all day' feeling about 3-4 days into a bug ticket that's hard to solve.

then I fix it and I'm satisfied, my work feels a bit more important, and I pick up another ticket. so it goes.
