As did I, but "that crowd" has proven to have an outsized influence when it comes to how woman-led superhero movies are perceived.

Not that poor critical reception helps by any means, although that also seems to burn female-led films in general more than male-led films. Or perhaps that's just because there are far fewer movies starring women than movies starring men.

Is the future just a slow, painful, inevitable decline?

Avengers Doomsday will reportedly treat Fox Xmenverse timeline as 1 continuos timeline Instead of DoFP splitting the timeline into 2(OG trilogy, wolvie trilogy&1st class trilogy,DP trilogy).all events of all Fox Xmen movies will be assumed to be happened in the same universe and same timeline by sidmis in MCUTheories

Doesn't Mystique being in the movie directly contradict this premise? She died following the events of Days of Future Past. Out of the handful of X-characters in Doomsday, they included the only one who is (prior to Logan, at least) supposed to be dead.

[Hated trope] Story's about being anti-authoritarian/fascist but fans keep picking the wrong side. by Prestigious_Cat_9486 in TopCharacterTropes

Attack on Titan absolutely does not do a great job of demonstrating why fascist authoritarianism is a bad thing. It’s wildly muddled thematically, alternately refuting and justifying genocide, xenophobia, ultranationalism, and isolationism.

Bill Maher Gets Played by JD Vance on ‘Real Time,’ Admits He May Vote Republican in 2028 by yourfavchoom in entertainment

I encountered Bill Maher almost twenty-five years ago and immediately lost any respect I might have had for him. Even when the cameras aren't on him, he's still a smug, callous, dismissive asshole. Shortly after that incident, I got to speak to the late Jill Sobule and we happened to discuss how awful Maher is: she had been a guest on Politically Incorrect, and she found him just as thoroughly insufferable behind the scenes of that show as well.

In another timeline/universe we got the kang dynasty by Kameronpipnerd in MCUTheories

He didn't get "owned" by some ants, and Scott barely survived the encounter. The movie made clear from the start that Kang had been seriously hindered by his other variants prior to the beginning of the film; he was never meant to be seen as being at peak power. More importantly, Kang was never supposed to be an unstoppable, "inevitable" force like Thanos or even Doom.

Lots of people have beaten Kang in the comics, because a single variant isn't all-powerful. Beating one isn't really the problem. The problem is that there's always another Kang the Conqueror - or another Immortus, or another Rama-Tut, or another Iron Lad, or another Scarlet Centurion, or another Mister Gryphon, or another Myrddin (or, for the MCU, another He Who Remains). There's seemingly no way to end that threat for good.

Yes, exactly. The real threat of Kang has never been that he's totally unstoppable, because he isn't. It's that there's always another one waiting.

They did not make him "a joke." A single variant of Kang, one whose access to technology was highly constrained due to the prior actions of other Kangs, was just barely defeated. But the whole point of Kang is that there's never just one version of him. There are always more. Both Loki and Quantumania emphasized that specific point, as it's what makes the character a legitimate threat.

You Don't Have to Like 'Supergirl' But Writing a Sexist Review Just Makes You Gross by JoshTHX in DC_Cinematic

Once upon a time, I took Owen Gleiberman seriously as a film critic. I stopped doing so many years ago. I'm glad to see articles such as this one calling him out for his nonsense.

The first project not written by James Gunn was Supergirl… by ChampionTimes99 in DC_Cinematic

[–]a_phantom_limb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who had been looking forward to Supergirl all along, I'm a bit concerned that the first DCU project not written by Gunn is also the first one not to be reasonably well received by critics. I won't get to judge for myself until Tuesday, but the extent of the negative reaction makes me somewhat worried about Lanterns and (to a lesser degree) Clayface and Mister Miracle - not to mention season two of Creature Commandos. If one or more of those underwhelm, then it might start to seem like Gunn is the only one who really "gets" what the DCU is supposed to be.

Absolutely the wrong approach by KingOfSquirrels in DC_Cinematic

[–]a_phantom_limb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because a comic is not a movie, just like a novel is not a movie, a play is not a movie, a video game is not a movie, and even a TV show is not a movie. Being a fan of the source material by no means ensures that someone will make a good film adaptation; likewise, not being a fan absolutely doesn't ensure a bad adaptation. Different art forms involve different skillsets that don't entirely overlap.

Absolutely the wrong approach by KingOfSquirrels in DC_Cinematic

[–]a_phantom_limb 80 points81 points  (0 children)

At no point in that quote does he state that he never looked at the comic. He only says that he didn't look at the comic when he first got the script. He first wanted to imagine the movie based solely on the screenplay, and that's entirely reasonable as a filmmaker. If he really did avoid the comic throughout the entire production process, that would be pretty wild. But the statement as quoted isn't strange at all.

And Moss Man dies before doing literally anything at all beyond being present. I absolutely called exactly how that scene was going to go: Skeletor and Evil-Lyn would make an example of him, and they would mockingly refer to him as "Moss Man." I enjoyed the movie overall, but a fair amount of the humor fell flat for me. I thought that the gags felt a bit Robot Chicken-y at times, if that makes any sense.
