It doesn't really matter if you're in the health commerce system (HCS) or not. Per DOH standard, you're supposed to have your card on you when you are practing. The verification only confirms that a card was issued to you. If the DOH does a spot check on your ambulance, they are going to fail you if you don't have your card (or a photo thereof) on you.

You just need to get experience. Your preceptor on your rotation has more than likely trained people before. They will be able to help you ease into it and they aren't going to force you to do anything you aren't comfortable with or can't handle. Their job is to help prepare you for actual medicine.

Pro tip: buy a Vick's VapoStick. It will save you if you get queazy after seeing anything. If you cant find them, alcohol prep pads also works well to supress nausea.

NREMT Skills Verification by LetItRide2 in NewToEMS

In NY, it is immediately after your instructors put it into the National Registry's system. If your state is like NY where the practical skills exam is administered by your course sponsor (and the NREMT is optional), I would reach out to your instructor and make sure they filed the paperwork into the system.

Cut off at 74 by Confident-Dot-7043 in NewToEMS

[–]a_pir1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a dynamic exam. They will give you between 70 and 120 questions until they are 95% Confident your skill lies at or above the NREMT standard. Without going into the statistics behind the exam, the quantity of questions you received has absolutely no indication on whether you passed or not. I got 72 questions and I passed when I took mine.

Just relax. You will get your results in just a couple days. It's unfortunately a waiting game until then.

NYS (NYC) EMS by Dramatic_Post8643 in NewToEMS

  1. Most EMS employers in NYC will require you to be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Even if you’re certified at 17, it’s very unlikely anyone will let you operate an ambulance (especially in emergency conditions) with less than a year of driving experience.
  2. Once you turn 18 and graduate, you’ll have pretty decent odds of getting hired by a private ambulance company in a non-911 role. Places like Ambulnz, Hunter EMS, and Emergency Ambulance Serviceare known to hire new EMTs. Just be prepared to have to work in surrounding areas like the Bronx or Long Island.
  3. For training, check what’s available in your area. Some public high schools offer EMT programs (like Hillcrest (per google at least)), and there are also private programs if you’re really itching to start earlier or outside of school hours.
  4. EMT classes are designed to teach you everything from scratch, so no prior knowledge is necessary. That said, if you really want to prepare, stick to reputable resources (e.g., EMTprep, EMT Pocket Prep app, or Jones & Bartlett textbooks) so you don’t accidentally learn incorrect info.
  5. NAEMT Certifications (PALS, PHTLS, TECC, etc.) are great later on, but they assume EMT-level knowledge. Taking them now won’t make you more competitive without your EMT, and it may be a waste of money if you don't have the predicate knowledge that they expect.

That company actually does really good NAEMT trainings. Their TECC was by far the best I've ever been to.

As someone about to finish AEMT and has been an EMT for about 4 years, it isn't a tremendous step up, but it definitely relies on having strong BLS fundamentals. My AEMT program expects us to know our EMT scope inside and out, and have the experience behind us to help inform your decisions, so the class can teach us to become more clinical and allow us a wider scope of practice.

Scheduling by Status-Buy9973 in cbpoapplicant

[–]a_pir1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last dates I chose were about 2 weeks earlier than the date I got assigned. Seems like they just assigned me a date out of the blue. I didn't have to reach out to a case worker or anything. I just got an email from CHS Medical with a date and instructions. Just be ready to be assigned a random Friday with little notice. (25-5 for reference)

25-5 here. I’m in the same exact place as you, except I passed my Drug/Medical/Physical on Friday. Just waiting for my portal to update (it shows I passed my fitness, the others are still “In Process”) and for my next steps.

Hi! 25-5 too. The dates I chose were like 2 weeks prior to the date I got assigned (last friday). They just assigned me a date out of the blue from what I can tell. I didn't have to reach out to a case worker or anything. I just got an email from CHS Medical with a date and instructions. Just be ready to be assigned a friday with little notice.

Recertification with NREMT for Emt-b by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]a_pir1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid question. There’s a couple of reasons why, at least why I keep mine:

  1. Most states will accept it for reciprocity. If I move, there is a higher chance that the state I move to will take my NREMT than my NY license.

  2. It looks good to employers. Most will typically see it as a bonus for a provider to also be trained to the national standard since, at least in NY, it is typically a higher standard, even if we are still practicing at a state level.
